A Bridge Over Lawndale

A 'bridge' fanfic that takes you from the Magical Mystik Spiral Tour Series to the upcoming Senior Year Series.

Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction (or a desperate plea for help....you be the judge) Daria & her amazing friends are ™ and © MTV. Daria and all other characters belong to MTV, but were created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis. Doesn't that just suck? All music, pop culture references, and the like are probably ® ™ and © also but I'm to damn lazy to look it up. Used without permission...Please don't sue me :>}

(Instead of the traditional Daria intro, you get the Senior Year series intro instead. The Music is Anti-Social as performed by Anthrax and the intro is Red Dwarf style, ie. it features scenes from the upcoming season (called teasers) actually, I stole the idea from Canadibrit, but DON'T TELL HER!)
The Logo screen reads: Daria (is not) in: "A Bridge Over Lawndale"

The scene opens at night. We see a plain car approaching a nice house. Immediatly, all kinds of lights come on. We see Ms. Li get out of the car. She hold up a remote and presses several keys on it. The lights go dim down a notch. Mrs. Li is mumbling to herself as she approaches her house.

Ms. Li:
Damn trip! At least it's over. AND I've managed to add a few thousand more dollars to my 'retirement fund'. Another year or so and I'll be able to retire.
Ms. Li keys in the security code to her front door, then uses a key on the lock. Then she slowly opens the door. Once she is inside with the door shut she reaches for a light switch. Just before she reaches it, all the lights come on. She sees that her living room is filled with cops and federal agents. One of them approaches her.

Agent:
Ms. Li? I'm special agent Dan Fogger with the Department of Education. We've been investigating Lawndale High's financial records. And we've found some discrepancies.

Ms. Li:
How dare you break into my house! When my lawyers...
Dan:
We obtained a legal search warrant. The security on your computers was quite impressive, but I'm afraid our hackers are among the best. You kept very detailed records Ms. Li. You are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent...
The scene fades out as the agent reads Ms. Li her rights.

The next scene shows the exterior of a hospital. Text across the opening says 'Soeul, South Korea'. The camera pans to a room. We see an older woman lying in bed. She looks drained. Then a serious looking man in a three piece suit come in. He approaches the bedside, and sits next to her.

man:
<Takira, I've completed the research for you.>1

Takira:
<Did you find him?>
man:
<Yes. Unfortunately, he is dead.>
Takira:
<DAMN! Did you find anything else?>
man:
<Yes. It would seem that you have a younger brother.>
Takira:
<A brother! Does he have a family?>
man:
<Yes. A wife and two daughters.>
Takira:
<This could work out. Contact him as soon as possible.>

The man gets up to leave. As he is nearing the door, Takira calls out to him....

Takira:
<Wait... What is his name?>
man:
<His name is Jake Morgendorffer.>

We now see a typical jail visiting room. Ms. Li, in prison fatigues, is led in by two guards. They leave and a man in a suit that screams 'High Priced Lawyer' enters. He sits opposite Ms. Li.
Ms. Li:
Alright Ken, how bad is it?
Ken:
Very bad. You're looking at serious jail time.
Ms. Li:
(sighs) Very well. What kind of deal can you cut me?
Ken:
(sounds embarrassed) I won't be cutting you a deal. For one thing, their case is so strong, they really don't need to cut you a deal. Plus, well... you can't afford to pay me. The IRS has frozen all your accounts.
Ms. Li:
How could this have happened? I had the school board under my thumb...
Ken:
Not all of them. The newest member, Dora Nibblett is quite ambitious. She instigated this entire investigation.
Ms. Li:
DAMN! Her daughter is such a follower, I never thought she'd be a threat to me. DAMN! just then, the guards return.
Guard:
Time's up, Ms. Li.
Ms. Li:
Wait! Who'd they get to replace me?
Ken:
They haven't announced it yet. The scene fades out as Ms. Li is led off.

Fade in shows the familiar (if you've seen Cafe Disafecto that is...) home of Anthony DeMartino. It looks to be early in the morning. We hear a phone ringing and the camera zooms into a window. We see Mr. DeMartino sit up in bed, turn on a light, and answer the phone.
Mr. DeMartino:
Hello?
Dora Nibblett:
Mr. DeMartino? I'm just calling to inform you that the school board has chosen you to replace Ms. Li as principal of Lawndale High. You'll need to have a staff meeting soon. I'll need to have a meeting with you ASAP so we can discuss the changes that will need to be made.
Anthony:
(Sounds shocked) Very well. How about this afternoon. Fine, I'll see you then. Goodbye. He hangs up the phone. A sleepy voice comes from beneath the covers.
Ms. Defoe:
Who was that, Tony?
Anthony:
It was the school board. I'm the new principal.

Ms. Defoe sits up. She holds on to the blanket, to preserve her privacy, and this fanfics pg rating.

Ms. Defoe:
That's great Tony. (beat) But . . . Ms. Barch isn't gonna like that.
Anthony:
No, she won't. (sounds thoughtful) I may have a way to avoid angering her too much. The scene fades away.

An old, broken down and rusted blue pickup truck pulls up to a nice house. Andrea Hecuba steps out and rings the bell. Stacy answers. Stacy has her hair cut short, and is wearing jeans and a 'Mystik Spiral' T-shirt. She and Andrea begin to carry boxes out of the house and into the truck. Soon they both get into the truck and drive away.
Andrea:
So, are you sure about this?
Stacy:
I've never been more sure of anything. I'm moving back in with my birth mother. We've discussed it and she's going to arrange things with dad. Like he would even notice I'm gone. Of course, Sheila's gonna be pissed off, but that's just a nice little bonus.
Andrea:
Sheila? That's your step-mom, right?
Stacy:
Yeah. She hates when I call her that, too. I used to be afraid to call her that. Gawd I'm glad you guys snapped me out of that.2
Andrea:
I'm just glad to see you happy again. So anyhow, what was that weird dream you had?
Stacy:
Oh, I dreamed I was in that anime you loaned me.
Andrea:
Really? So you were Stacy Rowe, Evangelion Pilot?3
Stacy:
Nibblett.
Andrea:
Huh?
Stacy:
Stacy Nibblett. My mother took back her maiden name, so I'm changing my name too.4
Andrea:
Well, that's cool. It's great to have someone to hang out with again. Well, here's your mother's house...

The truck pulls up in front of another house. We see a 'U-Haul' truck parked at the house next door. The next house over has a nice crop of corn growing in the front yard (it's guess who's house!)

Andrea:
Gee Stacy. Looks like you've already got a new neighbor.

A familiar looking (at least to people who have seen I Don't) male who is about the same age as Andrea and Stacy steps out of the house and approaches the truck. He spots Andrea and Stacy and goes over to talk to them.

Lyman:
Hi. I'm your new neighbor. My name is Lyman.
Andrea:
Lerman?
Stacy:
Luhrman?
Lyman:
No. It's Lyman. The people in the other home have already offered me fresh picked corn, and denounced me for owning a digital watch. Do you have any gifts or denouncements?
Stacy:
Nope. I'm just moving here myself. Maybe I can get my mother to denounce you, though.

Suddenly, a voice calls from inside the house.

Voice:
Lyman! Let's get moving! That stuffs not gonna get into the house by itself!
Lyman:
Rats. I was sure that it would. If you ladies will excuse me, I can get all the denouncement I need right here.

With this, Lyman enters the truck and precedes to wheel a handtruck full of boxes into the house. Andrea and Stacy look at each other, then continue to carry Stacy's stuff into her mom's house. Dora Nibblett comes down the stairs as they are setting the boxes on the floor. She looks a lot like Stacy, but has her long hair pinned up. She wears a 'power suit' not unlike Helens.

Dora:
Hello Stacy, Andy. There's food in the fridge. I've got a meeting to get to. BYE!
Stacy:
(sarcastic) Hi mom. Bye mom. (Ms Nibblett leaves)
Andrea:
Wow, you sounded just like Daria Morgendorffer.
Stacy:
You know who really sounds like Daria?
Stacy and Andrea:
(In Unison) Lyman!

Fade Out.

Fade in: Dora Nibblett is standing in the teacher's Lounge in Lawndale High. In front of her is the entire staff.

Dora:
Now, with the confiscation of the funds Ms. Li embezzled, as well as the funds we raised by auctioning off some of the more outlandish things she bought for the school, like the lie detectors and various security devices, we have a substantial budget for this year. However, this school is severely behind other schools in many sections. I'll be blunt. The GPA of this school is a joke. I've budgeted money for a tutorial program, and we will be sending letters to low scorers. All students with low GPA scores will be suspended from all activities until their scores are back up to an acceptable level.
Mrs. Bennett:
Does that include athletics?
Dora:
(Sighs) No, I'm afraid the school board's stand on athletics hasn't changed. But anyway, along with new text books, and other supplies, the school board has also selected a new principal. Anthony DeMartino.

As Mr. DeMartino moves to the front, we see Ms. Barch angrily tearing the heads off of male action heroes. Mr. DeMartino sees it too.

Mr. DeMartino:
Well, I only have a FEW announcements to make. FIRST of all, I plan to DISCONTINUE Ms. Li's policy which FORBID staff members from DATING. I see no problem with that.

Camera pans to Ms. Barch, who looks less angry, then to Ms. Defoe who just smiles.

Mr. DeMartino:
Also, the expanded budget allows for a VICE-principal. I have selected Ms. Barch as my Vice-principal. Also, Mrs. Manson has left to take a HIGHER paying job at the state penitentiary, so she'll have to be replaced. If there are no more questions, you're dismissed.

The teachers leave, Ms. Barch and Mr. O'Neill are holding hands. Fade Out.

Scene opens at a bus station. It is early morning. Two girls get off a bus. One bears a striking resemblance to Jane, but her hair is braided down her back. The girl with her is a taller blond. Both girls are dressed in blue jeans and T-shirts. The clothes look brand new, and if you were to look closely, you'd notice that they've failed to remove some of the price tags.

The Blond:
OK, Nora. You talked me into coming to Lawndale with you. Now what do we do?
Nora:
Calm down Cecily. You heard my aunt Amanda5 All we have to do is hook up with my cousin Jane, and we'll be ok.
Cecily:
But how do we find her? It's a big city!
Nora:
(sighs) No, it is a small suburb. And we'll just go to the mall. All teenage girls hang out in the malls. Don't you know anything?

The two girls walk to the mall. They enter through Cashmans. They are immediately spotted by the fashion club, Sandi, Quinn, Tiffany and Brooke.6

Sandi:
Quinn, isn't that your cousin's little friend Joan?
Quinn:
Oh my God, it is. And she looks even worse then normal.
Brooke:
And her friend is even worse, EWW!
Tiffany:
Those two desperately need our help.

The Fashion Club quickly surrounds the unsuspecting girls.

Sandi:
Don't worry. We're here to help you.

The scene fades out. We then see Sandi's car pull up in front of the Lane house. A newly made over Nora and Cecily get out and stumble (because of the high heels) up to the door. They ring the bell and a sleepy looking Jane 7 appears. They go inside, and the scene fades out.

Fade in: We see the Landon house. A car pulls up, and Jodie gets out. She waves to Mack as he drives away. Then she goes inside. She finds her little sister Rachel sitting on the living room sofa, crying.

Jodie:
What's the matter Rachel?
Rachel:
They made me take the stupid placement tests a few weeks ago. They just got back the results.
Jodie:
Oh. You did bad huh? How hard on you were they?
Rachel:
Oh no. It's much worse than that. I'm gonna be a freshman this year.
Jodie:
Oh my god! That means...
Rachel:
It means that now I'm gonna be the super-student.
Jodie:
All right. Where's mom and dad?
Rachel:
They wanted to go out to celebrate. I talked them into going without me. They took Evan though.
Jodie:
Great. Well, lets go drown your sorrows at Mr. Frigids.
Rachel:
But Jodie, you don't have a car...
Jodie:
No, but dad left the keys to the Jaguar.
Rachel:
You wouldn't!
Jodie:
(scooping up the keys) I would. Come on little sister, let's engage in some teen-age rebellion.

Rachel and Jodie go out of the house and get into Andrew's Jaguar. The tires squeal as they leave.

Footnotes:
  1. Translated from Korean. you can tell by the italics, and it's in between less than/greater than symbols.
  2. It happened in Desperately Seeking Stacy. Ain't continuity grand?
  3. A nod toward Austin Covello's fanfic.
  4. Before MTV revealed Stacy's last name as 'Rowe', Danny Bronstein came up with another last name for her. Nibblett. So this is sort of a tribute to him or something...
  5. Amanda Lane was revealed to be an Amish in Return to Lawndale. She also stated her intention to visit them at the end of that fic. Nora the amish girl is also from that one.
  6. This is the all new Fashion Club lineup. Brooke was added in Desperately Seeking Stacy when Stacy stood up to Sandi and quit.
  7. Jane has a clause in her contract that states she MUST appear every episode or fanfic. This was revealed in Meanwhile, Back in Lawndale.

Author's Notes:

Well, this isn't REALLY a fanfic, is it? It's sorta a 'teaser' for the next series of fanfics I have planned, called the Senior Year Series. This first several fanfics will lead up to a reworked Daria's Christmas Folly. Also I wanted to set up a bunch of events (Ms. li's arrest, The mysterious Korean women, etc) without really writing a whole involved fanfic. Let me know what you think! - Crazy Nutso
