DVDaria Annotation File
The purpose of this page is to provide short summaries and explanations of several of the terms and issues discussed on the DVDaria site. A list of links is also provided -- where possible -- to help you dig deeper on the subject.
Daria first appeared as a character on MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head. She was intended to act as a foil for the Little Weinerheads, a smart and acerbic female contrast to the idiotic doings of the two heavy-metal-influenced, hormonally-charged boys. (Glenn Eichler, who at the time was a story editor on B&B, created Daria, which is why B&B creator Mike Judge is not listed in the Daria credits.)
When the show began winding its way towards its final season, MTV approached Eichler about spinning Daria off into her own series. Eichler agreed, brought fellow B&B staffer Susie Lewis on board as co-executive producer, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Daria
Smart. Sarcastic. Cynical. Literate. Outcast. These terms all seem to go together. And they all describe Daria. Stuck in a public high-school in a typical suburban town, surrounded by morons, she uses her intellect and cynical idea of human nature to escape from complete boredom.

Other TV appearances of Daria
This short animatic episode was developed to give the executives at MTV a rough idea of what the show would be all about. Since it was basically intended as a "sampler," it has a very unfinished feel to it (simple black and white drawings, animatic-style, with voices and sound) and will probably never be aired. Karen Disher, production designer on Daria, was given the task of creating the look and feel of the characters and locations, though both would evolve a great deal by the time the show premiered with Esteemsters (#101).

Problems with the Daria videos
(This section is not available yet due to lack of time.)
Being a MTV (Music Television) show, many of the Daria episodes contained greater or lesser hit songs during the episodes and closing credits. However, in order to save with the licensing fees and necessary engagement, the Daria home videos released so far have lacked these original songs.
Many fans feel that these songs, despite not carrying any deeper relations to the storyline, were integral parts of show and thus crucial to the viewing experience.
