+ Voulez-vous regarder Daria en DVD avec moi, ce soir?
Well, it ain't perfect, but what is?
DVDaria launched its first attempt at reaching the non-English-reading world on its own turf this week with the launch of "DVDaria en francias" http://www.the-wildone.com/dvdaria/french_index.html. And it's had six hits so far, and some of them went to the "Buy" page! I guess they understood my/Babelfish's translation of, "the DVDs work in your region."
The next attempt is Spanish, but I won't have my (relatively weak) skills in that language to help me, as I had in French...I took three years of it, but never got much farther than "¿Donde esta el baño?" and have very little comprehension of the grammar. Luckily, I was able to avoid real clinkers in French, like: "Support for home video releases by Daria ventilators outside the United States is much stronger."
Anyone willing to help break various language barriers is very welcome to chime in...I can make simplified English text files available that explain the basics of the DVDaria plan: Buy, Sign, and Write. Contact me at dvdaria@yahoo.com if you're up for it.
Which languages? From alt.tv.daria:
"Daria International at The Irony Maiden today entered version 24, with information about _Daria_ in Argentina, Australia, Canada & Quebec, Chile, the Czech Republic, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America." http://www.sylvesternet.freeserve.co.uk/irony-maiden/international.htm
Daria -- it's not just for septics any more. (Inside Cockney rhyming-slang joke. Well, sorta a joke.)
+ Big fun in fanland
Not to give short shrift to other Daria information sources, but daily reading of "The PaperPusher's Site Message Board" at http://www.thepaperpusher.com keeps me up to date with stuff pretty handily. Like Martin J. Pollard's update last night of Outpost Daria http://outpost-daria.com, commemorating the sixth anniversary of the show's premiere. (Extra special thanks to MJP for being by far DVDaria's leading referrer.) Martin Sylvester's site, The Irony Maiden, you've already heard about above (and it's referrer No. 2). We don't hear much from Didier at Planète Daria http://www.daria-fr.net/ -- mostly I guess because the PPMB is in English, and while his English is great, he just doesn't hang, but I will mention that he's referrer No. 3. While on the subject, I'll mention the regrettable end of active updates by Kemical Reaxion of her outstanding fanfic and fanart site, Glitter Berries http://vulcan.spaceports.com/~kem/. Thanks, Kem, don't be a stranger, or at least any stranger than you have been. :-) She promised to leave things as they are for the foreseeable future, so thanks and thanks again.
Didn't get mentioned? Complain and I'll fix that.
Now...here's a scoop...something very, very cool will happen nearly immediately on DVDaria's generous and benevolent host site, The Contrarian's Corner http://www.the-wildone.com ... can't be specific, or Kara will sic Amy on me, and then who'd write you every week? Let's just say that, as you review your options, you'd better check in to the essay section sometime soon.
+ Buy! Buy! My Darling! -- or, amazonscan is wonk city
I asked you last week to check out http://amazonscan.com, and it's still not a bad thing...but the wonkiness continues. :-( Too bad, I was all psyched. I'll let you know if it ever works for the Daria listings...meanwhile, check out the rankings your own bad self at Amazon.com, who pays me nothing for this free plug and which I do not endorse. Make some marketing weirdo's day and buy lots of Daria product. You have but money to lose, and DVDs to gain!
Daria -- IIFY? DVD: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005S6KA/ref%3Dnosim/fc-20/102-6445071-5668920 -- Now bundling the Daria DVD with the film "Ghost World", directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi, for $37.23. Some think this film is very much Daria-like, while others disagree bitterly.
Daria -- IIFY? VHS: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005S6JX/ref%3Dnosim/fc-20/103-7142503-5613467 Rank: 4,829 ("Only four left! More on the way." Ahhh, music to mine ears.)
Daria Double Feature: http://amazonscan.com/redirect.cfm?asin=6305769370 Rank: 1,009
Daria: Disenfranchised: http://amazonscan.com/redirect.cfm?asin=6305522367 Rank: 1,551
Also, check out the books, "The Daria Database" and "The Daria Diaries," which seem to still be in print, as well as Daria's Inferno, the computer game, and Daria Life Central, the personal organizer...I'm not gonna do all yer searching for ya!
Thanks for reading. See you in seven. Boy, I hope MTV gives us all some news on IICY? pretty soon.
