| 101 - Esteemsters |
My favorite of this set is "Esteemsters," just because, well, that's where it all began. And maybe I'm biased because I've watched various episodes like 348509384 times, but an awful lot of Daria's and Jane's personalities come through in the very first episode.
|
| 102 - The Invitation |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 103 - College Bored |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 104 - Cafe Disaffecto |
Chalk up another vote for Cafe Disaffecto -- Melody Powers rocks!
|
| 105 - Malled |
I watch _Daria_ to get *away* from shopping malls.
|
| 106 - This Year's Model |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 107 - The Lab Brat |
As other have said, this episodes sets up a lot of stuff that never continues past the 22 minutes (rivalries, male bonding, fuzzy spots on family trees). Quinn's attempts to seduce Kevin were painful to watch, as was the Upchuck/Brittney storyline. The conclusion was excellent.
|
| 108 - Pinch Sitter |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 109 - Too Cute |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 110 - The Big House |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 111 - Road Worrier |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 112 - The Teachings of Don Jake |
"The Teachings of
Don Jake" is classic S-1 _Daria_, with sarcasm in abundance, Trent and Jake at
their most amusing, Q uinn at her shallow best, Helen's hypocrisy saving the
day, and Daria and Jane doing what they can to survive their families. And who
can forget those glitterberries and spirit animals.
|
| 113 - The Misery Chick |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 201 - Arts 'N Crass" |
One of my favorites because it exemplifies the whole essense of high school by turning something so trivial into such a Big Deal. For me, high school was all about trivial things turning into Big Deals.
|
| 202 - The Daria Hunter |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 203 - Quinn the Brain |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 204 - I Don't |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 205 - That was Then, This is Dumb |
The "A" plot is kind of dumb, but I can relate to it somewhat because my parents were hippies when I was little and then gradually became stressed-out middle aged consumers (middle age being a mindset rather than a biological category here). The flea market plot was done very well. For once Upchuck adds to the story instead of just pissing me off, Jesse is at his finest, and the level of shipperism is just right for the time and place.
|
| 206 - Monster |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 207 - The New Kid |
It was interesting to see Daria react to a new person, especially once it turned out she actually liked him, and I'm still kind of disappointed that he didn't stick around. He wouldn't have made a good boyfriend for Daria because he was utterly unfamiliar with the world Daria loathes, but it would have been cool to see him as a supporting character in future episodes. The whole yearbook part was handled totally unrealisticly, but it's still interesting because it proves that even in the early seasons Daria was willing to interact with other human beings on occasion. (In the first 2 seasons this usually required a bribe, but all the same, it happened.)
Also, the Ted situation was sort of the flip side of "See Jane Run" and "Jane's Addition" (although TNK took place before either): Daria found a guy and hung out with him instead of Jane. We don't see very much of Jane's perspective in this ep, but it looks like she's being supportive instead of possessive and b****y, which is yet another reason to like Jane. And Daria's date with Robert, courtesy of Quinn, was hilarious. |
| 208 - Gifted |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 209 - Ill |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 210 - Fair Enough |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 211 - See Jane Run |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 212 - Pierce Me |
"Pierce Me" is about
Jane's birthday, but mostly it's about Daria's crush on Trent. It's good anyway,
mostly because it leaves the crush as just that, nothing more. Daria tries to
read meaning into phonecalls from Trent and into the fact that he talks her into
getting pierced, but he obviously doesn't feel the same about her, and even she
knows it. It's also a very densely packed episode: Jane's birthday, Daria's
naval ring, Quinn's mother-daughter fashion show. But this works, too, without
cutting anything short.
|
| 213 - Write Where It Hurts |
Two-way tie between "Write Where It Hurts" and "Boxing Daria." Both are definitely among my favorites, WWIH because of the scenes from Daria's attempted stories (possible evidence that Daria's serious about writing as a future career)
|
| 301 - Through A Lens Darkly |
It was cool to see Daria and Jane interact with other people, plus Daria almost admitted she was wrong. But, unfortunately, Tom reappeared.
|
| 302 - The Old And The Beautiful |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 303 - Depth Takes A Holiday |
Maybe I've been away from the board too long for anybody to read this still, but I'm casting my vote for 303 Depth Takes a Holiday. Why? Well, that episode utterly fails to make sense, but I keep wanting to watch it again. It's funny as hell, and it's kind of cool seeing Daria so unsettled. Best of all, it makes no excuses for itself whatsoever. It's not a dream, a musical, a misunderstanding, or an alien abduction. It's surreal. It's impossible. Period. And it's funny.
|
| 304 - Daria Dance Party |
Daria Dance Party is a close second, just because it has so much Jane.
|
| 305 - The Lost Girls |
One of the three worst episodes ever.
|
306 - It Happened One Nut |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 307 - Daria! |
I liked it at the time, but a month later the songs were STILL stuck in my head, and that kind of soured me on the episode. I've since forgiven "Daria!" and in fact, I watch it every time I'm home sick (which is about twice a year).
|
| 308 - Lane Miserables |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 309 - Jake of Hearts |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 310 - Speedtrapped |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 311 - The Lawndale File |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 312 - Just Add Water |
Not
bad, exactly, but the whole "forced to go on a school activity" bit isn't very
original.
|
| 313 - Jane's Addition |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 401 - Partner's Complaint |
|
| 402 - Antisocial Climbers |
"Antisocial Climbers" would have been better if they hadn't already done the same plot at least twice.
|
| 403 - A Tree Grows In Lawndale |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 404 - Murder, She Snored |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 405 - The 'F' Word |
Conventional Jane" and Mr. O'Neill's apartment were worth seeing.
|
| 406 - I Loathe A Parade |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 407 - Of Human Bonding |
Mostly, all the charicatures were over the top. Terry Bary Barlow was too pretentious, Jake too clueless, Helen trying too hard to be hip, and so on. Generally not memorable.
|
| 408 - Psycho Therapy |
I'm voting for "Psycho Therapy." Why? We get to hear Daria's descriptions of what's wrong with her family. Helen as good as admits she likes Daria better than Quinn. We find out what Jake really thinks of Helen. Quinn giving fashion advice to Mrs. Johansen was priceless. "Jane-cam" was funny as hell, between Jane herself, Trent scratching his butt, and Tom's letters from the inmates. (Daria saw both Trent and Tom on Jane-cam, then chose Tom. Coincidence? You decide.) And in a suprise twist, we find out the firm didn't send Helen to the retreat to make sure she's a model wife and mother even when she's a fulltime lawyer -- they were actually glad to see that she devotes more energy to her job than to her family. Good-bye double standard, hello partnership. Maybe this will show up in the movie. Overall, this episode more than makes up for Jake's obsession with milk -- the only bad point of the episode. |
| 409 - Mart Of Darkness |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 410 - Legends Of The Mall |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 411 - Groped By An Angel |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 412 - Fire! |
"Fire!" is good, but it's the real beginning of the whole love
triangle crappola, and for that reason it doesn't get a vote. Quinn behaves like
a royal witch, and Tom really, really should know better than to hang out with
Daria when he comes over to Jane's house. The net result is a crappy, crappy
week for Daria, none of which is her fault. Poor her.
|
413 - Dye! Dye! My Darling |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| MOVIE - Is it Fall Yet? |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 501 - Fizz Ed |
I can't add to what's already been said, but that won't stop me from trying. My roommate doesn't even watch _Daria_, but from wandering in and out of the room, she could tell "Fizz Ed" sucked. It would have been a disappointment as filler in the middle of a season; being the season opener makes it one of the worst ever.
|
| 502 - Sappy Anniversary |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 503 - Fat Like Me |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 504 - Camp Fear |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 505 - The Story of D |
Daria acts like a stupid brat.
|
| 506 - Lucky Strike |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 507 - Art Burn |
Where'd Wind come from, and if he lives nearby, where's he been? And why didn't Jane and Trent hit him up for money? This episode is an excellent meta-commentary about refusing to churn out crap just to make money. Mr. Taylor's comments on Jane's work were worth hearing: she had delusions of grandeur about her job as a hack, but even someone who decorates with parts of dead animals was fairly unimpressed. Between this episode and IIFY? Jane's certainly had the wind taken out of her artistic sails, and I wonder what she'll do next. If we're lucky, IICY will answer some of the questions. Oh yeah, we also got to see Daria, Jane, and Tom all in the same place at the same time, and no one got killed, so that's another good point. A strong episode that involves actual character development, but not as many funny moments as TNK.

| 508 - One J at a Time |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 509 - Life in the Past Lane |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 510 - Aunt Nauseam |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 511 - Prize Fighters |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
|
| 512 - My Night at Daria's |
"My Night at Daria's" answers a lot of questions
we've been wondering about for 5 seasons (namely, who's had sex and who hasn't).
The worst part is the Lawndale High rumor mill -- if it's always like that, how
does Brittany survive? Or is Daria just special? The best part is that Daria and
Tom don't do it, because it's pretty obvious from the start that Daria isn't
ready. And it's very sweet that they stay together and find "a new level of
intimacy" anyway. Almost too sweet.
|
| 513 - Boxing Daria |
Because, even though it's the last regular episode, it reveals new information about OH. They could have used 513 for looking back over the show, or ended on a sanguine note where nothing really happens, but they didn't.
