| 101 - Esteemsters |
I put "Esteemers" first because, well, because it's the *first* ep ("Sealed With A "Kick" notwithstanding) of "Daria". it sets the tone for the series.
| 102 - The Invitation |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 103 - College Bored |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 104 - Cafe Disaffecto |
I loved the line where Jane shoots down a dreamy O'Neill when he basically tells her about computers bringing the community together, and the way she said "No". It was a "Daria-type" of "No"--simple, monotonic, and blunt.
| 105 - Malled |
I like "Malled", because it was basically a low-key, but good ep, more in the middle tier of 'Daria' eps, and of the "classic" Season One variety. Say, is this considered an "ensamble" ep? I never thought about that 'till now.
| 106 - This Year's Model |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 107 - The Lab Brat |
I agree that this was the only ep where Kevin's stupidity didn't make him seem to get in the way, and was funny.
| 108 - Pinch Sitter |
This is a "Sneaky Daria (and Jane)" ep, where Daria (actually) does subtle and slick things to get the wished-for end result, in this case, the Gupty children. Some other eps in this group are "This Year's Model" & "Fat Like Me".
| 109 - Too Cute |
The first bona fide 'Daria' ep (to me) showing that Quinn really DOES care about the opinion of her "cousin", even above the other FC members.
| 110 - The Big House |
The kooky "Parental Court" idea of Helen's was amusing. This ep might have been famous for one thing: Who *was* that bringing Daria home so late? (Guy from "Malled"?)
| 111 - Road Worrier |
The first truly "classic" 'shipper ep with Daria and Trent. I chose this one first only because it seemed to affect the most authors in this genre. I'm officially a "Fence Sitter", but I do respect both sides. Hm--I wonder what the official anti-shipper ep was? ("Lane Miserables" perhaps?)
| 112 - The Teachings of Don Jake |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 113 - The Misery Chick |
Now see, this is a great ep because this was the first time we saw Daria and Jane *not* get along swimmingly. Did anybody catch Jane's brief little annoyed facial expressions with Daria when Jane heard Daria speaking about how everyone was building up Sherman (or Sheridan?) after he croaked? It was a nice, slick touch on the writer's part, very sneaky.
| 201 - Arts 'N Crass" |
This was what I called a "Classic Daria and Jane vs. The Establishment" ep. The Partners In Crime against authority, namely, Ms. Li, (and at first, Helen). Liked the end--could've been the first ep where we truly see Helen has *always* been on Daria's side. (Kara, somebody, please check me on this... ;D )
| 202 - The Daria Hunter |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 203 - Quinn the Brain |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 204 - I Don't |
Perhaps the best Mack & Kevin exchange line I've heard: MACK: Tell me, Kevin: When you hear yourself talk, does it make sense to YOU? KEVIN (Oblivious, of course, stupid grin) Sometimes! |
| 205 - That was Then, This is Dumb |
That Was Then, This Is Dumb" to me is most famous for "The Smile", Trent's tiny little one to Daria, that is, when she thought he was asleep. Yeah, he did it. I believe it was to tease the 'shippers a little.
| 206 - Monster |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 207 - The New Kid |
Hmm--was Ted Daria's first *real* boyfriend? I mean "real" as in "actually-going-out-alone-with-and-having-a-good-time" boyfriend? Daria's relationship with guys whose names beginning with the letter "T" is interesting, to say the least...
| 208 - Gifted |
Heh--I wonder if Graham and his ilk are on the same level as Kevin, in a way? Call them the "Anti-Kevin"...
| 209 - Ill |
My favorite: I have a sense here that I won't be in the majority here, I was surprised with "Daria!", but I would highly doubt it here. I expect the favorite here to be 509, but for me, my winner here is 209- "Ill". Why? It's just a good solid all around episode that proves Daria knows and likes more people than she lets on, and the ending was a cute touch, even if it was obvious throughout. Brittany had her best lines in this episode of the entire series run. I just like it.
Hmm--actually, I'm guessing you'd be wrong here in thinking most folks would pick #509 as the favorite, A.J. (I haven't read any other posts on this thread yet, honest!), and that you'd be right in believing #209, "Ill" is the favorite, which I do, by far and away. "Ill" was the first bona fide 'Daria' ep that had an undercurrent of things that went in favor of Daria: (1) Her parents really DO care for her welfare, and (2) the so-called "popular" people really DO care about Daria, too. I liked the reaction of the school nurse when she first saw a red-faced Daria: "EWWWWWWWW". That was hilarious! Wonder how this ep compares to the other 'shipper eps with Daria and Trent? I haven't read much from anyone else on this... |
| 210 - Fair Enough |
See 410 - Legends of the Mall.
| 211 - See Jane Run |
A VERY close second. Perhaps the first time we see the "childish-acting" Daria so prevalant in Season Five.
| 212 - Pierce Me |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 213 - Write Where It Hurts |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 301 - Through A Lens Darkly |
Lumped along with 213's "Write Where It Hurts", this may the *turning* point for the series: Daria flirts with vanity, following writing how she believes how things *should* turn out with her family in the far future. This from the "Misery Chick".
| 302 - The Old And The Beautiful |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 303 - Depth Takes A Holiday |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 304 - Daria Dance Party |
The best "ensemble" ep to me. Every plot worked very well, both separately and intermeshed. Hm--I never thought about Daria and Jane putting on "la-dee-daishness" when they rejected Upchuck's cousins. I mean, I couldn't blame them for doing that, myself...
| 305 - The Lost Girls |
Definitely a flat ep. I think it's on the lower rung of the middle tier, just above the so-called "worse" 'Daria' eps. (Which are still better than most TV shows, of course) The most famous thing about this ep was (to me, at least) it taking a subtle dig at MTV itself. Notice how Val always thought she knew what was best for teen demographics, despite pushing *40*? Sound familiar? ;D
306 - It Happened One Nut |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 307 - Daria! |
The songs were very good, particularly Jake's.
| 308 - Lane Miserables |
Hm--which is the better 'shipper ep with Daria/Trent? Is this better than "Road Worrior", "Ill", or "Pierce Me"? Could be an interesting argument in itself...
| 309 - Jake of Hearts |
We got to see Jake's mom. Too bad we haven't(IICY? perhaps?) seen Helen's yet...
| 310 - Speedtrapped |
"Speedtrapped" to me may have been THE definitive Daria-Quinn bonding episode, and much better than the others in this category. The phony commercial bumper was quite humorous, and caught me off guard. Seeing Daria trying to drive was funny. Quinn talking about "What do you think people DO on a date, Daria?", particularly in the bar, a possible foreshadowing of "IICY?" was funny, too. And I LOVED how Quinn confidently stepped on the top of the bar counter to get the bail money, with Daria saying, "Uh, *Quinn*--?" The suggestion here about you-know-what had me laughing out loud.
| 311 - The Lawndale File |
The Lawndale File" - The show's take on alien/communist paranoia, with a touch of "X-Files" thrown in (with apologies to Mr. Takis). Funny throughout, though there seemed to be some forced attempts at humor, such as the scene with Mack, Jodie, Kevin, Brittany, Upchuck, and O'Neill in the park(?).
| 312 - Just Add Water |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 313 - Jane's Addition |
Hm--I wonder if *this* was the ultimate anti-shipper ep, the antithesis of "Road Worrier"? <.
| 401 - Partner's Complaint |
You know, upon further consideration, this ep concerning Daria still being upset with Jane and Tom being together, a carryover from 313's "Jane's Addition", *was* a contradiction. I mean, as somebody posted earlier, Daria seemed to accept Jane and Tom being together at the end of "JA"... I liked the mild tension over race with Daria and Jodie, from both perspectives.
| 402 - Antisocial Climbers |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 403 - A Tree Grows In Lawndale |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 404 - Murder, She Snored |
The best thing about this ep: Kevin's death in the dream. DeMartino choking him for real was a nice touch, too. ;D
| 405 - The 'F' Word |
The 'F' Word" is part of the "Mainstream Jane" ep guide to me: the others, "See Jane Run", and unofficially, "Jane's Addition". Yeah, "Jane's Addition", because Jane tries to be "normal" like everyone else for having a boyfriend, and it makes Daria angry.
| 406 - I Loathe A Parade |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 407 - Of Human Bonding |
Flat, flat flat. Enough said. Thanks.
| 408 - Psycho Therapy |
The definitive "What makes the Morgendorffers tick?" episode. And yes, I think Daria's looking at Tom's hinny... ;D
| 409 - Mart Of Darkness |
We finally saw the Thompsons--and I don't want to see them again. More of the building tension that will tear Jane and Tom apart.
| 410 - Legends Of The Mall |
I put this before "Fair Enough" ONLY because "FE" sorta recycled it's plot from "The Daria Hunter" (been there, done that, yadda, yadda, yadda, etc...). A previous poster brought up a good point about Stacy seeing Sandi as nasty here (in a subconscience way): Was this the *first* ep where Stacy (indirectly) hinted at this? Best of the three mini-stories (to me): DeMartino's Metalmouth, followed by Daria's house of bad grade story, then Sandi's.
| 411 - Groped By An Angel |
Groped By An Angel" - Perhaps the first real attempt at addressing religion on the show, or at least as close to it as the show came to doing it. We had a *tinnny* bit of insight into Quinn's psyche...
| 412 - Fire! |
I'd put "Fire!" (#412) ahead of "My Night
at Daria's" (#512). I guess my reasoning involves the building tension between
Daria & Jane, not to mention my personal extreme disappointment with Daria's
actions. In "MNAD", this was the one time I wanted to strangle Quinn for doing
that to her sister, jumping to conclusions, and the like. I thought it sort of
set Quinn back a bit from her growth in "IIFY?", more than anything else in
Season Five. Thanks.
413 - Dye! Dye! My Darling |
Uh-huh, I agree yet again, though perhaps I dunno if "The Kiss" made 'Daria' jump the shark...
| MOVIE - Is it Fall Yet? |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 501 - Fizz Ed |
Weak, not horrible, but just weak. What's been posted about this ep has already been written on this thread. May have been the first "Li-Centric" ep. Heh--Rey Fox's "Choice of a Skewed Generation", based on the same theme of corporate sponsorship in high schools, was far superior (to me).
| 502 - Sappy Anniversary |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 503 - Fat Like Me |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 504 - Camp Fear |
Yawn. Best scene here was when a young Daria was forced to swim in the lake when pulled in. Somebody bit my head off when I posted this after the ep showed, but I stand by my belief.
| 505 - The Story of D |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 506 - Lucky Strike |
12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx
| 507 - Art Burn |
Kara, Daria said "Phelps"! ;D Also, this was the first of *two* "Jane-Centric" eps in the final season. To me, the writers wanted to sort of "make up" to Jane about how everything turned out in Season Four, with her "losing" Tom to Daria, and looking lonely(?). They'd give her "Life In The Past Lane" also, throwing in Nathan as well, and telling us that she's long past what happened in the Triangle. Curiously, the FC's subplots in both of these eps were much better...
| 508 - One J at a Time |
Is it Carter County, or Lawndale County, now? Yet *another* inconsistant misnomer in the show, on par with Zen/Zon, and Cranberry Commons/Lawndale Mall. Basically, the end was the best on this ep. Whoop, there it *was*...
| 509 - Life in the Past Lane |
Jane looked quite attractive in her garbs, and Stacy "gets back" at Sandi. Other than that, eh.
| 510 - Aunt Nauseam |
Aunt Amy isn't all-knowing! :D
| 511 - Prize Fighters |
Prize Fighters" - Enough said, which is nothing good.
| 512 - My Night at Daria's |
I'd put "Fire!" (#412) ahead of "My Night
at Daria's" (#512). I guess my reasoning involves the building tension between
Daria & Jane, not to mention my personal extreme disappointment with Daria's
actions. In "MNAD", this was the one time I wanted to strangle Quinn for doing
that to her sister, jumping to conclusions, and the like. I thought it sort of
set Quinn back a bit from her growth in "IIFY?", more than anything else in
Season Five. Thanks.
| 513 - Boxing Daria |
Egad again! Right behind #213. Eps that help explain Daria's psyche are the ones to me that really stand out.
