101 - Esteemsters The only one that has any genuine references to her days in Highland, even if Beavis, Butt-head and the rest of the cast aren't mentioned.

102 - The Invitation Hey, she revealed to the 3J's that she was "Quinn's brainy sister" again here. Oh, lets not forget the scene where Jane removes Daria’s glasses and imitates her.

Jane: “Hi. I’m Daria. Go to hell. Naw, it wouldn’t work. My face is too expressive.

103 - College Bored Over at the MTV board, some people think this and a muscle poster on Kevin's wall proves he's a closet homosexual. I'm going to go there and tell them it was just a fraternal initiation, which also explains the who his "bigger brothers" were.

How do they know Susan, Doug and Ramona in the first place? There's another question we'll never know the answer to.

104 - Cafe Disaffecto A.J.>Even Quinn got in on the act, using her charms to seduce people into buying long distance phone cards.
>
Regardless of how much money as she had, I doubt she sold them all to Danny, despite what the MTV Website said. She's lucky she wasn't robbed on the way to school with so much of it hanging out of her pockets. And knowing Ms. Li, she probably *did* give her more phone cards to sell.

Daria's Melody Powers story was the best thing about this episode. I've got to wonder about that punk rocker. He was funny, but where did he come from,...other than England, of course?

105 - Malled A.J.>everyone, surprisingly including Jodie take the coupons, once again flushing Daria's optimism about her idealistic classmates straight down the tubes.

I didn't think Daria fet she had any idealistic classmates other than Jodie and Jane.

>...Daria catches Quinn, makes her and "Guy" takes them home...

Guy was an extra, just like Corey. I still think I saw him or someone like him on Beavis and Butt-head.

106 - This Year's Model >Quinn:
>A models what I'd like to be,
>Looking good comes naturally,
>da da da da
>da da me!
>
>Daria: That's it! Send the other girls home.
>
Who wrote that extended version of the poem and tried to pass it off as the original?

>Trent:.....you know, for the future, models, musician, models, musician.....
>
The perfect line for anti-shippers.

107 - The Lab Brat I can see her feeling jealous over Quinn, especially when she came out in the TV room with that red miniskirt, but to someone as much of a fixture of the social circles of Lawndale High like Brittany, Daria's just "a brain," and therefore would never have a chance of taking "Kevvy" away from her. Anyway, I always thought THIS was the first episode where we learn of Jake's miserable formative years.

A.J.>Pretty good episode, got the introduction to Ms. Barch and her hatred of anything with a Y-chromosome, and the basis of a few fanfics with the insinuation of a real father in El Paso.

Care to give a hint as to which one this is? I've got some ideas on Janet's background that I'm playing with myself. Not that this'll change anything for me.

What's cool about this? Brittany thinks both Daria and Quinn are sexual threats, but Daria is merely an intellectual threat, and nowadays we see that Quinn is one too.

108 - Pinch Sitter >Good episode, among the top of S1. Personally I wouldn't let a child be brought up like the Gupty kids were pre-Daria. Those are prime targets in schools and in real life for bullying and worse.

And yet many schools think they have to make Gupty kids out of kids they think have A.D.D., by using Ritalin, or other mind-altering perscription drugs like tranquilizers, anti-depressants and stimulants. Did they ever consider the possibility that some of the homeless people on the street might've been people who were forced to take these drugs when *they* were kids, and are still suffering from the side-effects whether they're still taking them or not?

>Daria is seemingly indeed a master of mind-control deprogramming. Quinn played very well in this episode, her storyline set off the main one perfectly.

Cool. And Skyler ditched her priorities by breaking up with her before she planned to do the same to him, which proves that Dina Decker's(and others like her)approach to prioritizing don't always work out.

It's cool that Daria & Jane got to deprogram the Gupty Kids, and it was also cool that Mr. DeMartino sounded like he was talking about an event from the middle ages, until we find it's about the Jonestown Massacre.

109 - Too Cute The pressure from the FC to get plastic surgery she doesn't need, provokes Daria to convince her that she's much too good looking to get some, and probably won't need to for a long time. Sure, they're such complete opposites it's hard to beleive they AREN'T cousins. Yet she goes against her usual attitude toward Quinn, and convinces her that SHE'S the ideal that many women are striving to be.

As I said, Daira convinces Quinn not to waste her time, or money if she were to get enough of it getting plastic surgery, because she doesn't need it. As shallow as she is, she's still cute.

110 - The Big House 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

111 - Road Worrier 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

112 - The Teachings of Don Jake 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

113 - The Misery Chick 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

201 - Arts 'N Crass I thought it was a commentary on school policy and freedom of speech for those under 18. But I liked it too.

202 - The Daria Hunter Dennis complained about the B-Story involving the psycho lady from “The Great White Shark” being lame, but I think that was the point. The story was lame because the circumstances were lame. Daria and Jane thought they were escaping from one bad time and entered another instead.

203 - Quinn the Brain I always thought Daria was attractive, but I still say she should've gone out with Joey & Jeffy while Quinn dates Jamie. That would've been amusing to watch.

204 - I Don't Three obvious things about this episode. 1)If she couldn't hit it off with Trent, you know Luhrman would be great for her. 2)Daria & Aunt Amy should've never left him to face the carnage of the battling Barksdales. 3)Those brides' maids were incredibly stupid. 4)The Daria Diaries contains a picture from "Masochist's Memories," of a cousin's wedding from years earlier, probably when Daria & Quinn were in Junior High(or maybe Wilson Elementary). Was this another cousin, or did Erin inherit Aunt Rita's bad luck with men?

205 - That was Then, This is Dumb Marc Thompson said something about Mr. DeMartino being similar to Christopher Walken, but the recrd thief actually looked and acted like him.

>Jane: Nah, he's entered a dormant stage, in about 10 years he'll awake and emerge as a butterfly..... I guess you're going to wait. <Trent smiles>
>
Funny, although I picture somebody like Freddie Mercury going on stage wrapped around a cloak with butterfly colors, not Trent Lane. Although, maybe Jane's comment was a measure of his talent and success as a musician.

>Jane: ...and then Jesse, the objects will come to life and plot their takeover of civilization, April 1, 2007, that's the day they make their move....
>
>Jesse: <what else does he say?> Cool. <slurps soda>
>
I could've sworn he licked an ice cream cone. Gotta look at that episode again.

206 - Monster Timothy O'Neill's car(the one Daria and Jane are riding in during that line) is a Saab from the early 1980's...possibly a Saab 99.
>Daria: But a wrap skirt is a definite don't...oh my god! Did I really just say that?
>
I'd like to think she was just making fun of Quinn. If so, she shouldn't have been so surprised she said that. But here's some more lines:

Daria: Sorry to dissapoint you, but I don't think this is an interactive event. Tonight they're showing Andre Sakarynsky's last meal.

Jane: A Russian art film from the 1930s.

Kevin: Russian?

Brittany and Kevin: Subtitles! (run off)

207 - The New Kid An old skill from Highland that she uses in Lawndale. Nothing wrong with that. But I didn't hate Ted as much as you did, because he wasn't as much of a bastard as Val, Romonica DeGregory, Claude(or is it "Cloud"?), Terry Berry-Barlow, Wally the Vexxer Salesman, or Leonard Lamm. And I'm kind of glad they didn't give Ted and Trent a Jon Cryer vs. Andrew McCarthy 4 Molly Ringwald scenario.

Ted DeWitt-Clinton: Daria's intellectual equal or superior, and social opposite...and he loves her. Jean-Michele from "Psycho Therapy," wasn't the only person not to be put off by her sarcasm, in fact Ted was amused by it. Despite the ending when he befriended Robert and his gang who were going to attack him and Daria for blowing his fake date, I liked the thing.

208 - Gifted Yes, geeks can be a**holes too.

>Graham: I'll make sure you'll never set foot in this school again!
>
>Daria: That's a relief. For a minute I was afraid you were going to threaten us.
>
One of the best lines this episode. And I still suspect the Landons overloaded Jodie with all this "volunteer" work to punish her for not going to Grove Hills.

209 - Ill Um pointed out the fact that a lot of the guys voted for "Ill," which seems like a sexist thing since she spent much of the episode bed-ridden, living somewhat like a damsel-in-distress, but the reasons I liked it so much as already been pointed out by other people here -- it shows that Daria is well-liked by more people than she realizes, even if she doesn't like all of them.

210 - Fair Enough 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

211 - See Jane Run 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

212 - Pierce Me 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

213 - Write Where It Hurts 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

301 - Through A Lens Darkly Having never needed glasses, you'd think I'd be in no position to discuss this, but I did notice something about her self-image between seasons two and three. In "Write Where it Hurts(#213)," Daria pictured her adult self as wearing a different set of glasses, blue sweater, no makeup and a slightly different hairstyle, but still the same level of confidence, still unashamed to be who she is and still uncompromising towards anybody who thinks she should go along with the status quo. Skip forward to "Lane Miserables(#308)," she first pictured herself with the natural look when she fantasized about her miserable life with Trent the failed musician. Then by the end during her second fantasy with a successful Trent, she was decked out in diamonds, jewels, cosmetics and a one-strap dress. She looked fancier than Quinn. Sounds like it gives some credence to the arguments of hardcore S1-ers.

302 - The Old And The Beautiful What about this scene?

Stacy: “My feet hurt.”
Sandi: “Stacy... for once, try to look beyond your own petty concerns. Today we're thinking about others, remember?”
Stacy: “Um, sorry, Sandi.”
Homeless Man: “Spare some change?”
(Fashion Club walks right past him, oblivious)
Sandi: “It's all right, Stacy. Just try to be a little more compassionate, okay?”

That’s good too, but my favorite scenes were when Daria tried to take “perkiness” lessons from Brittany, but not before sneaking one from Quinn first.

Daria(imitating Quinn): “Have I got enough product in my hair?”

And of course when she first tried to read to one of the seniors;

Nurse: “Mrs. Patterson, can I get you something?”
Mrs. Patterson: “Get me my walker. And then hit her with it!”

303 - Depth Takes A Holiday As much as I understand your reasons for hating it, I still like it. Is it far-fetched? Definitley, but so was "Daria!"(#307), and a lot of people like that episode better. I still find it amusing. One thing I like about it was the twists on both holiday traditions as well as TV cliches.

304 - Daria Dance Party [Dumping the Ruttheimer cousins] was a stupid move on their part. I would've thought Daria & Jane(espescially Daria) would've been above that sort of thinking. Upchuck did make a terrific D.J., though. Over on the ff-board when we were discussing the musical tastes of the characters, somebody brought up his collection and how it applies to this episode. You'd have to admit, being from a rich family gives him the means to build up a massive collection of tunes, and equipment.

I'm not as prejudiced against ensemble episodes as some others, but I agree with A.J. that this episode is average.

305 - The Lost Girls A.J.>So any message sent through this episode was lost to me by the most annoying voice of all time.
>
I found [Val's] voice tolerable.

>Daria: Welcome to Lawndale, where style meets substance and says see ya.
>
That was good, and so was her description of the true definition of "edgy."

>Jodie: Everybody's gonna know that's you, Daria.
>
>Daria: Hey, I'm jiggy with it.
>

And I would be too, which is why I liked the 1981 ABC Afterschool Special "The Wave." It reinforced my feelings about fitting in for the sake of fitting in. Daria didn't care if that article made her look bad in the eyes of youth culture, or anybody else for that matter.

306 - It Happened One Nut Blah episode. Nothing new came from this episode, except a new song lyric for Mystic Spiral. That's all, basically just a bunch of stuff happened.
>

Hmm. I like Jane's clever attempt to get Daria out of the nut stand. I'll say other stuff about this episode.

307 - Daria! Now I have to admit I'm not into musicals, even if they try to be funny, which was why I didn't like "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut," as much as "Beavis and Butt-head Do America," though I didn't hate either of them. Okay, it was fun. It had some laughs, it brought a few tears to my eyes, and and despite the Speed Racer reference in the beginning, I still didn't like "Gah! Gah Dammit!"

308 - Lane Miserables >Daria: <after the second daydream with Trent put new life into the crush> Damn!
>
It's not the end of the crush, just the beginning of the end. It also made the Foo Fighters "Everlong" more depressing.

309 - Jake of Hearts Another episode that everybody else hates but me. I think those little annoyances like Grandma Ruth, Bing and The Spatula Man tend to bring out what's best about Daria. They're the things that provoke her to make the witty sarcastic remarks we all love from her.

Her speech to Grandma Ruth about her expectations of her daughter-in-law and granddaughters was pretty good too. But like you, I think the episode should've revealed more about the Morgendorffers. Fortunately what id did reveal was that Ruth has some regrets about going along with the previous traditional role of women.

Tie Vote for #309, Jake of Hearts and #509, Life in the Past Lane: These two were originally stumping me on the #1 position. For JOH, I like the fact that Daria gets to tell off Grandma Ruth, Bing and The Spatula Man, and the additional revelations about Jake's family life. In the case of LitPL, Daria begins to accept Jane being pre-occupied with a love life, and Stacy outshines the rest of the FC, both literaly and otherwise. OTOH, There's the new "Tom was mine first and you stole him" running gag.
