Red episode names indicate favorites.

101 - Esteemsters An overall good start to a great series, the scene at Pizza Forest is painful for me to watch, but the rest of the episode sets the stage very well for the rest of the series. See how the partners in crime first meet.

102 - The Invitation Obviously, the writers were still feeling out the characters at this point, but if you look back at this ep, with what we know about the characters, we see they nailed them all on the head at an early stage. What would become a regular theme of at least the first 2 seasons, popular vs. unpopular, was the theme again with this episode. Many great lines from this one:

Jane: Alright, he thought my head was a lollipop.

Daria: ....waiting here for you. We were born in this room, we grew up in this room, and we thought we'd die here, alone, but now you've come...

Guy: She likes you!

Plus Jane's scene with the rent-a-cop was superb, all in all an excellent episode. Excellent interaction or lack thereof with the sisters (cousins?) Morgendorffer.

103 - College Bored The Morgerdorffers head out to their old college, Middleton, when Daria and Quinn get that assignment in a college prep course. Daria starts writing papers for cash, Quinn attempts to join a fraternity party and becomes keg queen, Helen searches like mad for her girls, and Jake drives them there, and that's about all. A couple of good lines:

Brittany: Shut up, naked boy!

Quinn: Dream on naked boy!

Jane: So does that mean these are the best years of our lives?
Daria: I hope not.

[Pan to Quinn and the college prep teacher]
Quinn: I should've known Daria was right about that making out scholarship!
[Throws her drink in his face]

Daria: But you have to admit, it does have it's moments.

Quinn's scene with Ramona, and her scene where she tries to get the frat guys to play her 1, 2, zoom game, and Helen scene with the kid wanting to raise her underwear up the flagpole were all funny. Good solid episode, but not a standout.

104 - Cafe Disaffecto To avoid an unwanted visit to music camp, Daria volunteers to work for a new coffeehouse after the old cybercafe got trashed. Originally by fundraising, which gives the episodes most hilarious line from Jane.

Jane: (regarding Mrs Johansen) She has no family, she ate them.

one other:

Jane: We should be doing something right now, I'm sure of it.
Daria: Yeah, I think you're right.

<Jane snaps picture>

Some of the other efforts at fundraising provided some humorous moments as well. Kevin and Brittany's visit to Mr DeMartino's home was done well, but how can the school make money selling 12 albums for a penny? Even Quinn got in on the act, using her charms to seduce people into buying long distance phone cards.

Other moments include Andrea's first lines, K+B's attempts at Shakespeare. Also it's well known Daria is intelligent, but this is the first episode where her writing talents are shown for us to see and she didn't disappoint, and neither did this episode.

105 - Malled Pretty tame by later episodes adventures but one seeing Daria for the first time with this episode might wonder why a principal would allow a field trip to a mall. As we found out in later episodes, Ms Li would allow anything that would net her some money, she probably got the mall to give her something in return somehow.

106 - This Year's Model A modeling agency comes to LHS looking for the next superstar fashion models. Quinn is obviously excited beyond belief. Daria is so opposed to the idea she <gasp> talks with her parents!(Hey, this was big for S1) Eventually it's the FC and the "decoy" up on stage, enter Ms. Li, who solicited the modeling agency to pay for bulletproof skylights(I wonder what the story is behind those), catching everyone essentially in the act of groping each other. During this Daria goes off to make a phone call, afterwards when they're about to announce the winner, we see who Daria called, a mercenary group offering a free class in the very auditorium the modeling agency was also using, the media was also invited, and caught Ms Li red handed, exposing her on the news. Eventually the contract winner is Kevin.

This episode seemed like it had a good message to follow through on, but didn't. Like a precursor to the poster in "Arts N' Crass", but not as well done, too much emphasis is placed on beauty and looks in this world, and Ms Li is essentially sending the message that young people's best hopes are in this industry, essentially digging her entire student body. Plus the ending, while funny, came completely out of left field. Mercenaries? I think they just couldn't think of a more realistic finish.

Some lines:

Jane: I've said it before I'll say it gain, you have THE coolest room.

Daria: It's got pros and cons. You can't hurt yourself, but you can't hurt anyone else, either.

Jane: I wish we had a schizophrenic shut-in living in our house before we moved in, 'course we've got Trent there now, that's almost the same thing.

Quinn:
A models what I'd like to be,
Looking good comes naturally,
da da da da
da da me!

Daria: That's it! Send the other girls home.

Quinn: Besides you've always said I could be anything I want to be.

Helen: Yes, we did say that....

Daria: That reminds me, can I become queen of Brazil?

Jane: Don't be sad, Brittany, he's with the winners now.
<Brittany cries louder>

Trent:.....you know, for the future, models, musician, models, musician.....

107 - The Lab Brat Daria gets stuck with Kevin as a science lab partner, leaving Brittany with Upchuck, who blackmails her with some photos of her with their rival teams quarterback. Kevin spends the time in front of the TV as Jake is trying to bond with him, as Quinn is trying to hit on him, but knowing Kevin as we do fails to realize it. Rumors start spreading, Kevin is known to be with both Daria and Quinn, as usual kevin, replies with that dumb look "whoa, twins!" Brittany s jealous,so she taks the mouse from Daria's project, which she soon realizes and tricks Brittany into giving it back. Eventually Daria gets an A(duh!), Kevin a D, Upchuck and Brittany, an F.

Pretty good episode, got the introduction to Ms. Barch and her hatred of anything with a Y-chromosome, and the basis of a few fanfics with the insinuation of a real father in El Paso. One of the few episodes where Kevins cluelessness doesn't grate on you.

Some lines:

Jake: They didn't call it self love then, Kevin, they called it self abuse.

Jane: Maybe you can get a wind up toy to distract him.
Daria: His wind up toy is working with Upchuck.

And Daria's description to Ms. Barch that saved her grade after Brittany's sabotage attempt.

108 - Pinch Sitter Quinn learns to start keeping commitments thanks to a class with Helen's time management consultant, because of a double booking that leads Daria to do Quinn's babysitting job. She's at her shallowest here, only going out with Skylar Feldman because his family has a boat and it's almost summer. Long term plans to break up with him and go with some kid who has a ski house. Full blown S1 Quinn with nothing held back.

Daria, meanwhile, is off to babysit the Gupty children, whose parents are coming to her house for "couples therapy night". These children are model kids, everything in a set way. Daria slowly turns them into free thinking children who don't always listen to what grown-ups have to say. With some creative story telling, and some help from Jane, she gets the job done, and uses the experience as the theme of her history paper.

Good episode, among the top of S1. Personally I wouldn't let a child be brought up like the Gupty kids were pre-Daria. Those are prime targets in schools and in real life for bullying and worse. Daria is seemingly indeed a master of mind-control deprogramming. Quinn played very well in this episode, her storyline set off the main one perfectly.

Lines:

Jake: All those couples, always so freakin' sensitive!

Daria: Don't worry, Dad, you'll find some insensitive couples, I'm sure of it.

Jake: Thanks, kiddo!

Tad: Raisins are nature's candy.

Daria: Then why do they have to cover them with chocolate to sell them at the movies?

Any of Daria and Jane's stories.

Tad & Tricia: I am cool, and that is it, everyone else is full of, full of, full of sh**!

Lester & Lauren: Tad! Tricia!

109 - Too Cute When an FC applicant gets plastic surgery to improve her appearance, Quinn starts to worry as her place in the FC is threatened as she is the last one brought in, and so is the first to go with a new member. This gets heightened when the rest of the FC all get nosejobs as well.

She gets Daria and herself out of school to see Dr. Shar, who preys on her insecurities, and convinces her that she needs $6,000.00 in plastic surgery. This doesn't work on Daria, even though she gets "temporary bust augmentations" which give Upchuck a thrill, and nothing else. Quinn is so bad she even takes up a collection thanks to an offhand comment by Jane. It gets to the point where Daria has to get involved and "Stop the madness!" Even going as far as to say that her sister is perfect, physically. Even that doesn't help until Brooke suffers a nasal collapse and is no longer threatening her rank in the FC.

Oh yeah, Kevin gives money away to people to make them like him after he dons a special ugly face as part of a science experiment, when all he has to do is take off the makeup, but then you know this is Kevin.....

A good episode here. Offers the message right off the bat in Barch's class. How the perception of attractiveness affects human behavior. Quinn is so obsessed at this point with her popularity, she will do anything to hold on to it. Including plastic surgery. A sad but true fact, that people are influenced by looks and often fail to see past that, essentially this is the message here, and only those close to you won't care one bit how you look.

Lines:

Daria: Wanna borrow my stapler?

Jane: Take up a collection?
<Quinn runs off>
Daria: You're paying for my therapy.

Upchuck: Call me country bumpkin, but what is it?

Jane: It's a fake boob.
<Upchuck gets flustered and runs off>
Jane: Guess he's not ready for a physical relationship.

110 - The Big House Daria and Quinn break curfew once too often, and are subject to a "family court" after Quinn is caught again, and both girls are grounded for 1 month, even though it was only Quinn the second time. Daria makes due passing the time away as she would normally do anyways, catch up on some reading. Quinn is desperately trying to find some way of finding out what's going on in the land of the popular, tying up the phone lines for hours on end. Daria finally busts out and goes to a faculty/DJ roller hockey game, in hopes of seeing Mr. DeMartino suffer another heart attack like the previous year. When she gets back Quinn has told, and the parents are upset. Daria doing what she does best, convinces Helen that's she's to dull to be worth grounding, gets off with only a probation, as does Quinn, ending the family court expiriment as a failure.

Good episode, not great, but good. Some good jokes here, and a good storyline, especially the "B" plot about the game. Nothing stands out here, but a solid episode.

Lines:

Helen: Jake, you can not revoke Daria's grounding.

Jake: But I'm Losing!

Jane: He could still have a heart attack, he tries standing up on leg and the knee is so painful he passes out.

Daria: Right.

Jane: Hey, just trying to find the silver lining.

111 - Road Worrier You know this one, the classic shipper ep, spawner of many crappy fanfics to this day. Daria joins Jane, Trent, and Jesse on a road trip to Alternapalooza, where all sorts of embarassing things happen to her, all in front of Trent. Bumps her head getting in the van, gets stung by a bee, sits on an old sandwich, has to wiz in the woods, etc. Always expecting the worst, even though Jane mentions her brother is oblivious. When the tank breaks down, she and Trent are left by the van as Jane and Jesse search for help behind a noise wall, and come back after finding nothing but corn, interrupting a heart to heart between Daria and Trent, where she convinces him not to give up on his dreams, and he gets to understand her better. Jane's glue gun eventually gets the van going again, just as the concert is over. Leaving Daria with a long ride home, but after having gained a better understanding of Trent.

Other developments include Quinn and the FC, along with Kevin, Brittany, Jodie, Mack, and the 3 J's also going to the concert. At least trying to, as they get sidetracked by outlet shopping and Brittany also grabs the wheel and follows them, so none of our cast actually makes it to the concert. Lastly Helen and Jake spend some, ahem, "quality" time together, if you get my drift.

Good episode all around. The first time we see Daria, actually with a weak point. We know she has a crush on Trent, this is the first time we see it in full effect. Even going as far as encouraging him with his career, which at that time, looked as if it were going nowhere. The FC's adventures in shopping and actually traveling to the concert were LOL funny. Especially Stacy's "Stretch pants" freakout. Helen and Jake show at times they can get along real well. Tons of good lines in this one, a few forthcoming.

Lines:

Helen: Your father went to one on the most famous festivals of the decade.

Quinn: Woodstock?

Jake: Altamont. Terrible tragedy, but I demanded my money back and I got it.

Daria: Wasn't Altamont free?

Jake: That's the same line they tried to use on me.

Jane: We'd like that, wouldn't we Daria?

Daria: Pass me a guitar string so that I may silence my friend.

Trent: Maybe if we spelled Mystic with 2 y's?

Daria: And I'll spell my name D-a-r-y-a, and be crowned Miss America.

Stacy: These are stretch pants! I'm wearing stretch pants!

Sandi: They're leggings! They're leggings, it's alright.

Daria: I knew I should've taken ballet. Stop staring at me you squirrel pervert!

112 - The Teachings of Don Jake To try to help relieve stress, Helen takes Jake and the girls off camping. We hear for the first time Jake rant about his father, I believe, giving us some new insight to him at the time. Everyone attempts to tell stories around the campfire with various outcomes. Jake's rant leaves everyone annoyed, Helen's is a vampire tale that gets too close to an R rating and tones it down just as the good parts arrive and Daria and Quinn are none too pleased. Quinn's story is only scary to her and Daria's makes everyone sick. The next day after a berry breakfast, everyone except Daria, who didn't eat hers, start hallucinating, they had eaten psychotropic berries and started running over the woods like maniacs. Luckily, thanks to Helen sneaking a cell phone along, Daria is able to get everyone to 911 and have their stomachs pumped.

Jane and Trent are off to the family reunion, where: they offend their Aunt Bernice and her hats, Trent is, I think, lovingly called a bum by his Uncle Max, Grandma chews Jane out, and nearly blows her eardrum out, are forced to share a room with 4 other people, eventually steal their Aunt's rental car and get the heck out of there.

Very underrated episode by most, I'd say its among the top 3 of S1. The camping scenes were funny, and most of the scenes at the Lane famly reunion were funny as well. Jake rants about his father for the first time we know of, Helen shows she just can't entirely leave work, and Daria shows her grace under fire, I'm not sure I could be that calm if my family was acting like that out in the middle of nowhere. Nothing deep about this episode, just a good solid ep.

Lines:

Daria: I hope the raging envy you're feeling won't hurt our friendship.

Jane: I DO envy you.

Daria: Then I'm afraid the fever has reached your brain, and you have to be destroyed.

Grandma: Come closer, Jane.

Jane: Yes, Grandma?

Grandma: Closer.

Jane: Yes, Grandma?

Grandma: Closer.

Jane: Yes, Grandma?

Grandma: <screams> What the hell is wrong with you?!

The whole "spirit animal" chase.

Daria: Okay, family's gone mad, no one knows were here, no way to contact civilization because Mother made big deal about cutting off all communication, what to do......<cell phone rings>.....rely on Mother's hypocrisy to see us through this crisis.

113 - The Misery Chick 113- "The Misery Chick" A former great football player comes back to LHS for a dedication ceremony. He's a total and complete jerk who insults or propositions everyone he meets. Daria tells him off, he storms off, and gets killed by falling crates.

Everone begins to come to Daria for advice because they think she's dark, which she isn't, she just chooses not to interact with everyone, this misconception upsets OH. Jane is at odds with Daria for not appearing to care that someone died. Drifting apart, until Trent gets them together and they talk things out, Daria accepting he shouldn't have died, Jane accepting he was still a complete jerk.

A glimpse into Daria's personality. If there was any doubt where she was coming from in S1, you see it here, she is who she is and nothing will change that, classic episode, the 2nd best of S1, IMO.

Lines:

Daria: Excuse me.

Tommy: You're kidding, right? Like I'm going to talk to you, <to Jane> Now you, maybe, like 4 hours into a kegger.

Jane: Perhaps after I vomit on your shoes?

O'Neill: I'm sure you think about the dark side all the time.

Daria: The Dark Side? Are we talking about The Force?

Jane: You just made 10 bucks off that poor girls suffering.

Daria: Yeah, that was wrong.

Jane: Yeah, next time......

Daria: Twenty.

201 - Arts 'N Crass" Arts N' Crass- Sends a message on beauty and its possible costs, the first point where Helen steps up for Daria. Includes one of Trent's best lines, after hearing Jane's plan: "Alternate plan.....cool." Quality episode.

202 - The Daria Hunter Panned by most as an incoherent piece of garbage that made little sense. It did make ittle sense, but I liked it. Just one of those shut your brain off and enjoy the pretty colors type of episodes. Plus a few running gags started with this ep. The O'Neill Barch relationship, the Helen Ms. Li feud continued, the first serious volleys thrown in the Sandi-Quinn rivalry, was only some words to that point no actions, until this one. Jake's childhood rantings as well. Plus it had probably the best end credit music of season 2. Not a super ep, but much better than most give it credit for, IMO.

203 - Quinn the Brain Quinn gets a break on an essay, and everyone considers her a brain, so she jumps on it. Seeing how popular it makes her. I wouldn't be surprised if thi was the ep that got the notion of a possibly smarter Quinn that we've seen since IIFY? This s also the first time we see Daria with a figure of some kind, so we know she just hides it, not that she doesn't have one.
Daria's transformation scene was one for the books. The whole Jane/Quinn Pavlov exchange was hilarious. Jake's explanation of his call to "Moviephone" And Quinn's essay itself, funny good episode all around.

204 - I Don't In the first glimpse we get of the Helen-Rita rivalry, Erin is getting married and their mother is paying for the whole thing, in a futile attempt to upstage her sister, Helen gets Daria and Quinn put in as bridesmaids. One nitpick here Erin is 21, even if we count season 5 as 1 full year instead of a half, Erin should only be 23 in Aunt Nauseam instead she's 24. Back to this ep. we also get the first glimpse of the then "savior" Aunt Amy. Daria has found someone in the family she can finally relate to in some way. We also had a minister with designs on Quinn, a pointless subplot about an LHS bridal show, and Luhrman "Is that your first name or your last?"

We get our first deep look into the Barksdale family here, and little else but filler. So-so episode.

205 - That was Then, This is Dumb On the plus side for Daria, though she didn't see it, Trent let loose with a smile after hearing Daria's words of "concern" for him, she got to spend time alone with him, and thanks to Quinn she had some nice blackmail for her parents by the end of the day, so a pretty so-so day. Also a pretty so-so episode. I honesly can't put a finger on what exactly I'm not crazy about with this episode, I've just never really liked it too much.

206 - Monster After making an inadvertant "suggestion" O'Neill assigns a movie making project to his class, thanks to Daria. Jodie, Mack, Kevin, and Brittany make a documentary about the supermarket strike, with Brittany in full gown.

Daria and Jane follow Quinn around for a day to try to exploit her. But Quinn is being the model actress, not slipping up one bit. Finally as Daria and Jane are tiring and nearly ready to give up, Quinn slips talking about her pores and not needing pore refiner. Daria is having nightmares after being around Quinn for too long, while Jake who got a box of home movies put on videotape, keeps reliving one painful childhood memory over and over. Both are awake at 4am respectively, "Bonding" as they call it. Its unknown if she knew what was happening, but Quinn gives a little speech that makes Daria reconsider her position, and tries to put Quinn in a better light, which fails for her entirely and makes Quinn more popular than before.

Generally assumed as the first episode where Quinn shows she may have a brain, this episode is just good fun. Nothing overly special besides Quinn's speech, and Daria's minor change of heart in regards to the movie, possibly also the first episode where Daria shows some compassion for her sister and goes easy on her. Good solid ep.

Some lines:

O'neill: Couldn't that movie be made today?

Daria: I guess, if you could find somebody to exhume the actors.

Quinn:.....you better not zoom that thing, if you can see any of my pores, I'll swear I'll kill you! Stop the tape! I do not have pores! My pores are cute! My pores are tiny! You're fired!

Jane: That's a wrap.

Daria: But a wrap skirt is a definite don't...oh my god! Did I really just say that?

And obviously, Quinn's speech to Daria and Jane.

207 - The New Kid Daria meets a home-schooled kid after she signs up to yearbook, Ted Dewitt-Clinton. His quirks interest her enough to get to know him better. They mstart getting closer together, they see each other more, though being the first for both, neither knows what to do and don't even realize they like each other that way. As time goes on, he actually dumps her for being shallow, now that's a putdown! At the urging of Helen and Jake, Quinn sets her up with Robert, the "Yes ma'am" guy, as you'd figure it's a total waste, both later reconsider, and go out to a video arcade, where Ted meets Robert and they get hooked on virtual reality swordplay, and completely forget Daria, so she goes home, gets no webpage software, it's given to Quinn, who gets some "hits" from Daria.

Ted, one of the evil twosome that was to breal up Daria-Trent, the other Monique. Anyone ever try a Ted-Monique shpper story?

Anyways, Ted is a dull character, at least to me with a voice almost as annoying as Val's. You'd figure they'd throw Trent in here somewhere but they don't, a waste for some real drama and possibly angst, that would've made for a great episode, but outside of Daria actually doing something, joining yearbook, this episode didn't sit too well with me.

Lines:
Ted: So, this is gum? I like it! Hey, Mom, Dad, gum! I got Gum!

Daria: You tried tobuy my influence with a date?

Quinn: That's the way we do it in America, Comrade.

208 - Gifted Due to their academic prowess, Daria and Jodie are invited to Grove Hills, a school for intellectually gifted students. On the way there, Jodie's activities impress Helen & Jake. After cutting through much of the crap, Daria meets some of the students and likes them at first, as they seem pretty much like herself, intelligent, sarcastic, not afraid to speak their minds, Jodie also likes them at first. Soon they see how they really act, snobbish, cliquey(sp?), instantly disliking anyone who doesn't meet with their standards. Daria and Jodie have a heart to heart, and both admit there's a part of each of them that would like to be like the other one. We really get our first look into Jodie's mind in this little conversation. Meanwhile, Helen & Jake meet Andrew & Michelle Landon. Jake and Andrew get along all right, but Helen and Michelle can't get along, anything Helen says is interpreted as racist by Michelle, and they never find common ground.

Quinn is forced to spend the evening at Sandi's house because of Daria's trip, and gets kicked out after Sandi's brothers lavish too much attention on Quinn. She goes to Tiffany's and gets thrown out of there, because she finally blew up at Tiffany because she is so insecure about her weight. She ends up then at Stacy's and all is fine there until Stacy starts copying everything Quinn wears, wants to match their hair colors, Quinn gets freaked out by this and heads to the last person she can think of, Jane who reluctantly takes her in for the night, and immediately regrets it when Quinn won't shut up at all most of the night.

Good episode here that deals with Jodie in some depth for the first time. Daria acted as one would figure, she liked the other students of the surface, but then grew tired very quickly of their elitest attitude and told them off. Quinn's escapades into the FC's homes and finally Jane's were very interesting and funny as well. Provided a good counterbalance to the main story.

Lines:

Daria: Should we pull up to the main gate, or just apply for jobs in the stables?

Graham: I'll make sure you'll never set foot in this school again!

Daria: That's a relief. For a minute I was afraid you were going to threaten us.

209 - Ill Daria develops a mysterious rash at a Mystik Spiral gig. She runs off afraid to face anyone, the rash vanishes by the time she wakes up the next morning. Jake on one of his kicks thinks Daria is doing drugs. What else is new with him? The rash does come back at school, and forces Daria to the nurses office, and then to the hospital for some tests, which of course reveal nothing.

Meanwhile, Brittany, who was at the club also cheating on Kevin, is the only one who sees the rash as it first develops, and makes a deal with Daria not to mention it to anyone, eventually leading to Brittany's best line ever, IMO.

Jane eventually lets the secret loose, and Brittany, Kevin, Jodie, Mack, and Quinn are all in the room waiting to see how she is, surprising Daria, because she didn't think that many people cared about her. Eventually she's released, finding out the rash is being caused by anxiety, thanks her parents(a moment in itself rarely seen), and is off with Jane, who has asked Trent to drive them, thus bringing back the rash at full speed.

A very good episode, IMO. It shows that more people care for Daria than she ever thought could. It shows she has more friends than she may realize. Even her parents care for her, which is a strange revelation to hear for some teenagers. A cute ending as well. The running gag with Mrs. Sullivan was amusing as well as Jake's drug rants. Cleverly done episode without any glaring faults, IMO.

Lines:

Brittany: Do you promise not to tell Kevin about Terry or Jerry or whatever?

Daria: In the unlikely event that through some bizarre set of circumstances I end up conversing with Kevin, I won't tell him about Terry or Jerry.

Brittany: No one's told you anything interesting about me, have they?

Jane: No one's ever told me anything interesting about you.

Brittany: That's a relief!

Brittany<at the pizza place w/Kevin, Mack, and Jodie> the speech about the "Deals" she made.

Kevin: Sooooo, she is in the hospital?

210 - Fair Enough After a roof collapse, the school hosts a medieval fair to raise money. Quinn auditions for and wins a role based on the Canterbury Tales over Sandi, who later confuses Quinn's lines and after Jeffy's reading, the crowd starts laughing and begins to throw food at her and force her off the stage.

Daria and Jane end up sharing a ferris wheel ride with Stacy, who won't stop crying after her date failed to call her back. Eventually, they get rid of her and end up running the information booth for Jodie and proceed to spin many yarns about yon medeival times.

Mack ends up a dragon for the kids to beat on, Mr. D. is the jouster, Kevin and Brittany end up on the highway somwewhere after Brittany keeps him away from the play as he has won the spot opposite of Quinn and she is very jealous.

I liked this episode. Probably much more than most of you. The K+B scenes were funny and not grating, Daria in the car with Quinn, the Sandi-Quinn dynamic played here, Daria and Jane in the information booth. All were good moments. No real plot outside the various goings on at the fair, yet they seem to mesh up in someway. Another great episode.

Lines:

Daria: I will make a dainty garland for my neck, and choke.

Jane: Must. Stick. Head. Cold. Water.

Kevin: Uh, babe, now I know it doesn't take this long to get to school.

Brittany: Are you suuuuuuuure?

Kevin: Aw, man!

211 - See Jane Run To get back at Ms. Morris Jane joins the track team, surprising Daria. Also Jane meets and likes a boy named Evan already on the team. Jane turns out to be very good winning her races fairly easily, Daria turns out to cheer her on half-heartedly, as she sees this as Jane selling out to the system. This puts a strain of their friendship. They get more tense around each other, and the slightest things set them off. While Jane is away, Daria talks to herself to fill the void left by Jane. Worried, Helen enlists Quinn to spend some me with Daria, only agreeing after she gets Helen's gold card. This doesn't help as Quinn ditches Daria first chance she gets. When Jane gets a bye on an exam, Daria now sees this as more evidence of selling out, and stalks off from Jane again. After the "losers" comment from Evan, Jane realizes what this has been doing to her and Daria and quits the team soon after.

Another good episode. Daria talking to herself to fill the void of Jane's absence was a bit strange, as I'd imagine she never did that before meeting Jane, but I could understand it. One interesting note, this seems to start a trend. When Daria tries something new, Jane seems to accept it with open arms, i.e. joining yearbook in "The New Kid". When Jane starts something, Daria sees it as Someone/something taking Jane away from her, and thus opposes anything Jane tries. Kind of selfish of her, treating Jane as something she alone should be allowed to be with and enjoy, even if that means Jane's not happy. It's all about Daria here and again, this seems very selfish of her. Brittany's running gag about the splits was funny, but the above scenario, takes away from this episode to me. Still the best Jane episode out there.

Lines:

Daria: Land that big sneaker endorsement yet?

Jane: Nah, they wouldn't meet my price.

Trent: It takes alot of guts, all that practicing, day in, day out, and for what? So a bunch of drunks can make your art the backdrop to their pathetic mating dance? They don't care about your dream, they just want something loud going on so they don't have to talk.

Daria: Were not talking about Jane anymore, are we?

212 - Pierce Me The shipper ep to end all shipper eps. Trent calls Daria to ask her something, flustering her, but when Jane comes in the room he gets secretive and hangs up. He heads on over to Daria's house and we go to..... commercial, big teasers. After getting the 3rd degree from the parents, he asks to help pick out a birthday present for Jane. While out and stil somewhat flustered, she goes against her normal judgement and gets her navel pierced. With Trent's help and his hand, Daria makes through the procedure alive and well.

Meanwhile, Quinn and Helen are prepping for a mother-daughter fashion show fundraiser for school. When Sandi gets involved, Quinn becomes ultra-competitive, coaching Helen, going for beauty treatments together, shopping together, all to get ready for the fashion show, in which they promptly embarass themselves when they trip and fall together on the runway

Back to Daria, when she goes to bed that night, the hole closes up. Upset she heads to Jane's all worried over Trent's reaction, which is calm as usual, and offers to get her a tatoo when she's ready. At the next Spiral gig, she reveals she finally got Jane art supplies, and Trent wrote her a song in that typical Trent wrote it, so it makes little sense style, we all know and love. When she gets home she gets the 3rd degree from the parents about the navel ring, after Quinn told them about it to try to make herself feel better about the fashion show debacle. But of course by this time it's gone, and Quinn is embarassed yet again.

Excellent episode. A side of Daria we rarely see. Getting flustered around Trent, getting her navel pierced, acting like your typical girl who does something stupid for a guy, even the great Daria does a stupid thing now and then. The crush is at full bloom with this episode. The fashion show scenes, while funny, took away from the main plot, and weren't related in the least except for Quinn finding out about both in the middle of the 3rd act. Took time away from what many wanted to see, Trent/Daria. Still an excellent ep.

Lines:

Trent: Why would a cool guy like me ever write a song about someone like you?

Daria: Psst.

Jane: Oh, no, the toilet is talking to me again.

Daria: Psst. Lane!

Jane: Talking toilet, you may call me Jane<sees Daria>, oh it's you.....did I see what I think I just saw?

Daria: You didn't see a weeping virgin did you?

Daria: Trying to brighten your ho-hum life with a little illusion? <yawns> Boy, I'm tired. 'Night everyone.

Quinn: But she was pierced! Pierced, I tell you! Oh the humanity.....

213 - Write Where It Hurts Daria has to come up with a special assignment for English class, take people she knows and place them in a fictional story. One is a parody of the Graduate, one is set back in the 1800's, one where Daria herself is the preferred sister over Quinn. None of these suit her tastes. She seems about to give it all up having a severe case of writers block, when Helen comes through and saves the day. She says to picture things as you'd like them to be, not the way things are. She does so and comes up with a story where she is married to a college professor, Quinn has married Jamie and has 4 kids, and Helen and Jake are much more relaxed than they've ever been. Helen takes this as a loving gesture from Daria, and begins to lose self control and begins to cry.

Another excellent episode. The first where we really see Helen come through for either of her children, and we know that Daria does see hope for her family by the image we see of their future selves, so she thinks the family can better itself, a revelation for her. Even Jake's stew scenes were funny and offered a counterpoint to Daria's story and even inspired one of her failed attempts. Good work done here.

Lines:

Quinn: Oh, dear sister, may you not only marry well, but wisely.

Trent: Did she say marry?

Jesse: Yeah. <They all run off>

Daria: We should at least tell her about that 8 lane highway they built outside the house last night.

Jake: Hmmm, I think you're right. <car crashes off screen>

Quinn: Ow! God!

Jane: Do you think that someday, I can read one of your stories?

Daria: Nope, but you can read the one where you run away with Kevin.

Jane: WHAT!!!!!!????

301 - Through A Lens Darkly OH struggles with the notion of her own vanity after getting contact lenses, and goes through a self discovery in the process. Excellent episode it dealt with an issue close to me, glasses vs. contacts, and nearly mirrored it. Many great one liners, solid all around. Daria: She wore glasses. Jane:Nah, she donated them to an orphan. That whole bathroom exchange was a classic.

302 - The Old And The Beautiful Average episode all around, though Daria does stick it out at the home, I'd have expected her to give up after the first day, and stick it to Ms. Li, as she needed 100% participation to get that award. The FC scenes were actually the funniest parts of this episode.

Sandi: Theresa, they're homeless, not tasteless.

Stacy: Eww! Why can't he just reach inside his shopping cart and pick out something that matches? Even when the FC is trying to do good, they can't quite grasp the concept minus Quinn. Plus the reaction with Mrs. Johansen was LOL.
Overall however, an average episode.

303 - Depth Takes A Holiday The infamous episode. The episode which shall not be named. There are many names for it, usually bad ones. Though some people do like it and that's their perrogative, you either like it or don't> There seems to be absolutely no middle ground on this one at all. Talking holiday personifications, interdimensional wormholes, this makes almost every fanfic out there seem on canon when compared to that.

Two lines even remotely funny from this episode:

Quinn's Ewwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!! I need a shower! [after seeing her parents on the couch]

Daria's Trent? Oooh! after Cupid does that trick on her (Thanks for reminding me of that one, Um)

That's all folks, I guess you can tell which side of this I'm on, as if you couldn't :-)

304 - Daria Dance Party Another first with this episode, the first and only "emsemble" episode that actually carried and exeuted the premise fairly well. Quinn gets roped into coordinating the school dance and lays the job in Jane's lap. Meanwhile, to compete Sandi hosts her own party, the same night as the dance, which turns out to be a total flop, while the job Jane did with the dance is getting rave reviews, our little Quinn takes all the credit. We also get a rare highlight from our friends Kevin and Brittany, with their little spat that brings about this line from Daria: "Forget it, that species mates for life". Daria and Jane also nearly find their one true loves, except that they're the cousins of Upchuck. In a rare turn to the dark side for our heroines, they dismiss them on the basis of name alone, just as Quinn or any other "popular" person would've done, without a second thought. One of the only times I was disappointed in them.
Overall this works great for an ensemble episode, which equals an averaage episode overall.

305 - The Lost Girls This episode sent a positive message about the marketing stratagies corporate America uses on kids but especially teen girls. Anorexia, Bulimia, ostracizion, all caused if you aren't up to date with the latest trends in clothes, music, etc. A very good message to send and that makes this a good episode.

Val's personality, however, make this episode hard to watch, and her voice makes me turn down the sound, it's so annoying. So any message sent through this episode was lost to me by the most annoying voice of all time.

306 - It Happened One Nut Daria is forced by Helen to get a job to improve her people skills. Quinn gets one to pay for a portfolio of her neck. Daria is forced to endure not only a job at a nut stand, but a job at a nut stand working with Kevin. Trent comes in, and despite Jane's best efforts heads right over to the nut stand, embarassing Daria, who hides in the back. To make up for this, Jane tricks Helen into coming in and gets Daria taken off the job, much to her relief. Meanwhile, at the pet store, Quinn has: Let a bird fly free that eventually got caught in the air conditioning, let lose a boa constrictor, and in the effort to get it back enlists the 3 J's who let loose a horde of mice, and other animals, eventually getting her fired.

Blah episode. Nothing new came from this episode, except a new song lyric for Mystic Spiral. That's all, basically just a bunch of stuff happened.

A couple of lines:

Jane: Look! Monster trucks and naked models! Naked! Naked! Naked!

Daria: Hey.

Jane: What?

Daria: I think I just found job satisfaction.

307 - Daria! The characters sing through an approaching hurricane. Daria and Jane get stuck on the roof with Kevin and Brittany. Trent and Jake go out ooking for them and crash the car into a tree. Daria and Jane take shelter in a water tank shack of the school roof. Eventually they get down(how isn't explained) and everyone is releived, and they can sing some more.

Don't let the above lame description fool you. I really liked this episode. All the songs were great, except one- "The Big Wet Rainstorm's Over", take away the music and you've got a damn fine plot idea. True everything wasn't explained in detail, but I can overlook that in this case. This episode is enjoyable anytime I pull it out and watch it. Fact: This was also the only episode run out of order from it's production number-307, yet it was the season 3 premiere, though TALD would've been a better opener, this is still a damn fine episode.

The songs
"Morning in the 'Burbs"- Morgendorffer family morning.

"If the Town Blew Away"- Lhs gym, fans, football players, faculty, Daria and Jane on the roof.

"Gah, Gah, Dammit!"- Jake's mad dash home after hearing of the hurricane.

"They Must Be Worried"- Daria, Jane, Kevin, Brittany in the water tank shed.

"Can't Leave Yet" Helen at work, and Quinn shopping.

"Manly"- Jake and his rant before going out to find Daria and Jane with Trent.

"The Big Wet Rainstorms Over"- Various characters.

308 - Lane Miserables The entire Lane clan returns home, pushing Jane and Trent away into the Morgendorffer home. Even Amanda gets tired of this intrusion and asks Helen for help in getting rid of them, talking about their days, and it works, soon after arguments break out, and everyone is soon off their seperate ways.

At casa Morgendorffer, Helen tests Jake, and finds out he doesn't really know his kids at all. So both ask questions of Daria to Jane in hopes of trying to figure her out better. They both warm up to Jane and Trent as though they were their own children, practicing up on their parenting skills, and liking every minute of it, bonding well with them.

Having Trent so close gets Daria into a worry fit. They talk for awhile, and get to know more about "comparitive literature" seemingly closer than before, though still not more than friends at that point. Then Trent leaves for a date with Monique, Daria sees this and is crushed, calling the crush over. But is on again after Trent admits he'd take her out if she were a bit older.

Excellent episode here. Had everything, the only thing is that it's a major coincedence that all the Lanes come home at once, but if you can overlook that, there's really nothing wrong with this episode. Each Lane had their own quirk which either made them funny, indifferent, or outright strange. Helen and Jake's attempts to get to know Daria better through Jane was hilarious, and Daria running her emotional gamut short of outright crying, made me feel for her, especially in the scene where sh's just looking out the window after Trent and Monique have left.

Lines:

Helen: Drugs?

Jane: Nope, unless you count TV.

Helen: Depressed?

Jane: Nope, just realistic.

Helen: Sex?...... That's too obvious, can I have another?

Jake: Age?

Jane: 17.

Jake: Um, height?

Jane: 5' 2".

Jake: Favorite color?

Both: Black.

Jake: Aw, that's too obvious, can I have another?

Daria: <after the second daydream with Trent put new life into the crush> Damn!

309 - Jake of Hearts Jake suffers a mild heart attack, and brings in his mother to take care of him. This causes some changes in Helen and Quinn. Helen abandons the workaholic mode to try to impress Grandma Ruth who doesn't like the way she does things for her "little Jakey", and doesn't like Helen too much at all. Quinn takes a sudden interest in medicine, and starts concerning herself with becoming a heart doctor so she can save Jake the next time he has a heart attack. Postponing all dates, she begins coordinating outfits around a stethoscope, reading books with no pictures and lots of big words.

Daria, meanwhile has to deal with the family crisis at home, and has to deal with 2 DJ's who have been granted a deal which allows them to broadcast from LHS all week. Now some DJ's are hilarious, our local DJ, Bill Keeler is one, Bing and the Spatula Man are NOT! Annoying as all hell, humiliating contests for the cheapest prizes,(a bumper sticker for a date with Upchuck?) overall downright lame and annoying, and they're constantly on Daria, who finally has to tell them off by telling everyone about her father's heart attack, bringing down everyone and causing the DJ's to run for the hills. At home she and her father bond closer than "OHB" ever could get them to. She also tells off her grandmother in front of her mother and sister as a favor to them. Jake is all the better because he realized he has outlived his father, and thus is better than him at something. With Jake better, Helen and Quinn return to life before the heart attack.

So-so episode here. The moments Daria and Jake were together were good, and Helen and Quinn's attempts to change were as well, but they reverted back, predictably, there was no way you could really like Ruth in any way, her voice was done by the same person who did the voice for Val in TLG, so that didn't help. The DJ bits were bad and nearly painful to watch, the only good part was where Daria tells them off. An episode that could've done so much more with Jake and his family history, instead was replaced by 2 DJ's who couldn't be wacky enough to save their lives. Blah.

Lines:

Ruth: Didn't you give him a bell or something?

Helen: We were just about to, yes........ this doesn't say anything about a bell!

Helen: Daria, what's going on up there?

Daria: It looks like we may have another patient on our hands.

Jake: Wahoo! I'm better than him, I'm better than him at living! He was dead at my age, Wahooooooo!!!!

Daria's speech to the Z93 crew.

310 - Speedtrapped Daria gets her drivers license, and is immediately put to the test. Jane and Mystik Spiral are in jail out of state, because they're unable to pay the fine for a traffic violation. Daria must bring the bail money, and Trent's song notebook. Quinn joins in after overhearing, and causes nothing but problems. She picks up a hitchhiker and ends up giving Jane's bail money to him. Meanwhile, the band is locked up with a guy witha really annoying voice who claims to know alot about everything. Eventually with a plan designed by Quinn and ultimately worked by Daria, they got the money back, but the Lanes were paying off their debt to society by working as entertainment at the sheriff's daughters birthday party.

A good episode dealing with the relationshop between the Morgendorffer sisters, as they put it and as a running theme of the series, 2 completely opposites can complement each other and get the job done. Nice to see Daria isn't perfect, with the apparent trouble during the drivers tests.

Lines:

Jesse: We broke the cake!

Deputy: I don't have time to ride herd on every stupid man in this county, especially judges.

311 - The Lawndale File Strange occurences and coincedences lead Daria and Jane and most of the town that either aliens or communists are coming to take over Lawndale. Helen and Jake's attempts at conversation regarding aliens, meaning immigrants, Quinn all of a sudden changing her wardrobe to cover up her neck after an offhand comment from Jane, O'neill's comments about sci-fi movies are misconstrued by everyone, leading many to think that our heroines are "Atomic Communists from Mars" it doesn't help that Mr DeMartino is lead away in handcuffs for no apparent reason, and lastly, Trent appears to be playing "happy" music, far from his norm.

Turns out Quinn's wardrobe change was the result of a neck zit, Mr. DeMartinos disappearance was caused by agents who mistakenly thought he was an illegal immigrant, O'neill restated his comments telling what he really meant, and Trent was writing a jingle for a used car ad on tv.

A surprisingly good episode, shows how a simple miscommunication can lead to very odd problems and things spiraling way out of control. Everything seemed to work out here, all the situations out of the ordinary, Mr. DeMartino, Trent and his "hell" music, the reaction to Quinn after Tiffany and Stacy accidentally reveal the private problem one of them has, even Artie's appearance was funny here, a surprisingly good episode.

Lines:

O'Neill: You're a communist, You're an alien.

Daria: Trade you Cuba for Jupiter.

Jane: When's the last time you saw Kevin with out his neck thingy?

Daria: You mean implants?

Brittany: I heard that! And it's not true!

Jane: Guess she thinks you meant her UFO's.

Jane: What's the going rate for an artists soul?

Trent: $20, An hour of free studio time and a set of tires.

Jane: That's it?

Trent: Hey, they're new tires.

312 - Just Add Water The whole school goes on a mandatory Casino Night fundraiser aboard a cruise ship.

Daria and Jane try to find a place to sleep after spending the last night watching an entire "Sick, Sad World" marathon. They can't.

Jake attempts to woo the owners of the boat to try to land a consulting job, and Helen heads off to the poker tables.
He doesn't get it and gets hit on by the owners wife all night long.

Quinn tries avoiding everyone when her date, an international model named Marco fails to show up, to avoid the rumor that she was stood up, it doesn't work.

Mr. Demartino, tries to get out of the trip, because he has a gambling problem, yet gets pulled in, loses all of his money, and has to try to pawn his watch.

The ship runs into a garbage scow when a drunk pilot gives the wheel to Jake and he leaves it to find Helen, luckily the water is only about 3-4 feet deep at the crash site and everyone is ok, except for Sandi, whose date dumps her after the crash.

There you have it, "Fair En...., I mean "The Dar....., I mean "Just Add Water" Basically the above two episodes rehashed, with a new location and repackaged as a new episode, Titanic references a year and a half after the fact, I feared at this point the show was losing steam, If S4 hadn't already been guaranteed at the time, I'd have sworn they were trying their hardest to kill the show. This one was just painful to watch.

Lines: Only one decent one:

SSW Announcer: Meet the cannibal with a heart, quick, before he eats it! Next on SSW!

313 - Jane's Addition Daria and Jane have to do a multimedia project for school, they go to ask Trent to compose some music for it while he's at a gig, which he accepts. During all this Jane meets someone named Tom, goes out with him, leaving Daria by herself at the club. She gets more and more agitated when Jane starts spending more and more time with Tom than herself. The final straw is when Tom interupts "pizza time", and Daria's attitude makes Tom leave, and Daria does so soon after. Trent, meanwhile still hasn't come up with any music, and Jane is very upset because a low mark could put her status in jeapordy. Tom and Daria talk and smooth things over as Tom says Daria is all that Jane ever talks about. And Daria agrees, reluctantly, for Janes sake.

Trent fails to come up with the music. So he takes Daria out to make up for it and to explain what happened. Using many double entendre's between the project and the Crush, they're pretty much telling each other that they're not right for each other, and break away from that idea gracefully.

As someone wrote in an essay one time, this was essentially the pilot episode for what Daria had become in the 4th and 5th seasons. The first real anger shown between the partners in crime that we've seen. The petulant side of Daria comes out again, as she wants Jane all to herself again and no one can have her. Yet we also see her realize Trent for what he really is, and finally finishes off the Crush. Still a very good episode.

Lines:

Mystik Spirals "Mr. Normal" song.

Jane's attempts at singing.

Daria: I hope he hits it as a musician, because I can't think of another job he could hold down.

Tom: I don't know, you know those farmers that get paid not to grow anything?

The Daria-Trent speech in the pizza place.

401 - Partner's Complaint OH still harbors some resentment for Tom hooking up with Jane, forcing the partners in crime to team up with others for a class project. Carries over the feelings from "Jane's Addition" over into this ep. Interesting because everythg seemed OK at the end of JA between Daria, Jane and Tom. It also maybe the fact that the current animation stle began with this ep, so it seemed off from the start, OK, but no great episode.

402 - Antisocial Climbers Basically a rehash of "Just Add Water", which was a retelling of "Daria Hunter" itself. Basically it was "Daria Hunter" on a mountain. Again there were some funny moments, don't get me wrong, O'Neill's Blair Witch scene was funny, as were Helen and Jake's attempts at conversation after the afterglow had worn off. Plus Sandi finally gets rid of Quinn, only to have her get back in on the flimsiest of reasons. Daria's only moment was her conversation w/Jane in the middle of the blizzard. Again a saving grace is the end credit music, a good selection in a season full of them. But another so-so emsemble episode, with only one good one to show for it at this point in the series, "Daria Dance Party". Again average.

403 - A Tree Grows In Lawndale Kevin gets injured and considers giving up football, but then he wouldn't have his "babe" so he decides to rejoin. That's pretty much it in this ep. The whole town is a loser because the Lions are losers subplot was unrealistic, the only funny moments were:

Kevin: Oh yeah? King me! King me! King me!

Kevin's speech to the kids about his accident.

The cheerleader scenes in the bathroom where they think the ghost of Tommy Sherman is out to haunt them, and the subsequent "exorcism" scene.

I'm still trying to figure oue what that thing n Kevin's shirt was supposed to be. So-so ep.

404 - Murder, She Snored Yet another first in this episode. The first episode to use a dream sequence as the main plot of an episode(with DTAH we're unsure if this is the case) This episode was total filler. Though the homages to the many cop and mystery shows were amusing, and sometimes had me guessing what they were spoofing next.

The dream is of Kevin's murder, something some of us would like to see for real, and Daria is the main suspect, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and must prove her innocence through a variety of various spoofs of mystery episodes.

Another episode you seemed to either like or hate, I thought this ep was okay, not great, but okay.

405 - The 'F' Word I failed to see the point of this episode, so do I pass the assignment?

406 - I Loathe A Parade Lawndale High School holds it's homecoming day parade, which Daria completely forgets about, but gets caught up in, when she has to go on an emergency run for toilet paper for Jake. Where she runs into Jane who is looking for Tom, Tad Gupty who got lost and seperated from his parents so Daria helps him find them, Upchuck and his ahem, "vehicle", a lion mascot who won't leave her alone, and Tom, who offers to help Daria find Tad's parents while they're looking for Jane.

In the process of that, the lion is unmasked, turning out to be Mr O'neill, they get caught on a float with the FC and Daria almost gets a makeover, she loses the toilet paper, then Tad, who eventually finds his parents.

Throughout all of this Daria and Tom are having a good time in each others company, and enjoying the day, despite the misadventures. They eventually find Jane who offers that the 3 of them go for pizza, and Daria starts to but gets splashed with paint changing her mind, as Tom and Jane walk away, he turns around and gives Daria "the look" that led to the triangle.

Excellent episode all the way around. The characters were all used perfectly for however long they were on screen. The float turning over and catching fire, was funny, Jake in the bathroom was funny, Daria's attempts to get out of the parade were unique and funny. Then obviously, the look at the end, would lead to bumps in the road ahead for OH's Daria and Jane. Very good episode.

Some lines:

Jake: Damn heart smart chili!

Daria: Walking away now with too much information.

Tom: And we'd have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling kids!

Words weren't needed to describe "the look", but it was the moment of this episode.

407 - Of Human Bonding A last minute call from Eric prevents Helen from going on a business outing with Jake, so Daria decides to go, partially to avoid Jane and Tom, and partially because the FC is having a sleepover.

Daria secretly admires her father as a hero, and he doesn't appear as clueless as usual regarding his eldest daughter. Jake is trying to drum up business for s firm at this convention, then meets Terry Barry Barlow, a franchising genius who saved a balloon expedition with his teeth. In an attempt to get closer, Jake offers to go ballooning, but is afraid of heights, eventually chickens out. Daria tells off Mr. Barlow, who leaves in a huff. The night before, Jake and Daria figure out their common bond is one that's unspoken at the dinner table as both read the newspaper. Jake ends up with a few bandages after crashing the balloon, Daria earns some respect for him, and they visit a museum of medical oddities at Daria's request.

The FC sleepover has Helen donning PJ's for a makeover, the FC arguing over who thought whoever was going out with whom and whatnot. Stacy finally got agressive, with a pillow, but we all ve to start somewhere. Tiffany got a rash from a bad facial mask, and Quinn and Sandi each have nightmaress about cutting their rivals hair off, and none get that much sleep.

Bonding? Where? Sure we got to find out how they feel about each other, but neither could put it in words when the time came for them to do so. Instead, we get the unspoken bond thing, a cop out really. Barlow joins Val, and Ted in the annoying guest Hall of Fame. He didn't do much, except help us see Jake's fear of heights firsthand. Arno the ballonist was funny, though as was some of the FC sleepover, but overall this episode was pretty lame, so much could've been done, but little was.

The line:

Arno: I am not a hoppy thing! I am a world class balloonist!

408 - Psycho Therapy As a test for a partnership Helen and family are sent out to a spa for some psychological evaluations, the firm wants too see if Helen is ready to be partner material. She's so hyped up she's wound even tighter than usual which is amazing considering how wound up she usually is.

Jake gets into his sessions, he flys off into a near rage after the psychologist badgers him about his family.

Quinn puts her psychologist to sleep, literally, with all of her FC stories and other trials and tribulations.

Daria singles out every problem in her family. Quinn is afraid to take a deep look at herself because she may find nothing there, Helen works hard for her family but feels bad about it and tries to overly make up for it. Jake is not really clueless, it's just a smokescreen he uses when he's unsure of something. Her doctor is amazed at how well adjusted she is.

At a role-playing session Jake really hits home with his rendition of Helen, calling her among things a "superwoman", a do it all, who does it to make her feel better about herself, Helen runs out realizing what she appears as to her family, Daria coaxes her out of that feeling, by reassuring her she's at least always trying to do what is right by her family, and all is smoothed over, and the results of the examinations, are acceptable to the partners at the firm, who put Helen on the fast track to a partnership.

Meanwhile, Jane sets up a webcam, which turns out to be a complete, and utter failure, she only gets 8 hits, 3 from Daria, and at least one from a prison, who seemed to like Tom's butt as he wiggled it in front of the webcam before realizing it was there, he didn't appreciate it too much, she got rid of it, the first problems in their relationship begin to appear.

Very good episode all around. We got a glimpse into everyone's minds and learned more about every Morgerdorffer. The role-playing scene had to make you feel for Helen, no matter what you thought of her beforehand, feeling as she's driving the family apart in some ways. The webcam scenes, while not integral to the plot at all provided some needed humor in a somewhat subdued, yet excellent episode.

Lines:

Jake: Beautiful, beautiful, triptophane!

Quinn's past life regression as Cleopatra.

Eric: Come on, let's go out there and kick some wussy ass!

The role playing scene.

Helen: Favorite pastime, turning water into wine?

Daria: I knew I should've gone with the burning bush.

409 - Mart Of Darkness Daria accompanies Jane to one of those warehouse stores after Tom eats her gummi bears which were to be used for a statue. Daria, is looking for a bootlace to replace the one which Quinn took to fix her accessory bag. They spend forever tracking down a salesgirl who turns out to be Andrea. Then get caught in a long line as they get locked in the store as the power goes out.

Quinn has to head to the warehouse store to pick up sunscreen along with the rest of the FC after she forgot to bring some to the LHS football barbecue.

Kevin and Brittany have to go to the store for some BBQ sauce that Mr. O'neill forgot, and eventually buy a ton of stuff to make up for a mistake Kevin made, none of which is BBQ sauce.

Trent and Jesse take Tom to the store so he can make up with Jane, and so Trent can find a new headlight for his car. But their stupidity upsets Tom who doesn't ever find Jane.

Mr. DeMartino is at the store for the free samples they give out, trying to make ends meet of a thin salary. Fights with Mrs Johanseen over cheese logs, while getting chased out by security, trips over the grease pan sending grease into the electrical outlet shorting out the whole store and stranding everyone inside.

At the picnic O'neill tries to talk to Kevins father about his grades. But he just wants O'neill to just pass Kevin so he could concentrate on football, when O'neill objects, Mr. Thompson picks a fight with him, only to get laid out by Ms. Barch, and the whole thing degenerates into one big fight.

Did something actually happen in this episode? I'm not sure. Actually plenty did, but it all led absolutely nowhere. No resolutions to any of the plots that came up, everything was pretty much left hanging. I'm not an Andrea liker, so her only comments of S4 did nothing for me. A major plot contrivance to have Daria's boots off, as the only time they're ever off is when she's in bed. Overall this episode flat out stunk by Daria standards, decent when compared to anything else though.

Lines:

Jane: I don't have a leg to stand on, do I?

Daria: I'd rather not answer that, Stumpy.

Trent: Those Boysencranstraw candles stink, man.

Jesse: Yeah, but chicks like them.

FC: Ewwww, what's that smell, ugh!

410 - Legends Of The Mall Quinn and the FC need rides home from the mall, after Jakes car breaks down. Prompting 3 stories about Lawndale urban legends:

"Rattling Girl of Lawndale" A girl played by Sandi, makes herself so thin her bones rattle, this causes her to be laughed off from a dance, and she vows revenge on all popular girls forever after.

"Metalmouth" A teacher played by Mr. D. grinds his teeth away to nothing thanks to his students stupidity, so he forges his own set of steel dentures which pick up radio stations and end up humiliating him. He is still out there chomping away to this day.

"The House of Bad Grades" A family, played by the Morgerdorffers, builds a bomb shelter at the height of the Cold War paranoia. To escape the commotion around the house, the eldest daughter goes down in the shelter and gets sealed in after falling asleep, vowing revenge forever, that if she can't leave Lawndale, no one else can either, so she changes all homework answers of anyone who lived there to the wrong answers.

This episode is probably the bottom of S4, IMO. It was good seeing all of the characters in different period outfits, but all of the stories really did nothing for me. "Metalmouth" was probably the best of the 3, but that's still not saying much.

Lines:

Trent: Some say that's what drove him to madness, others say, you know, no.

Trent: We'll wait an hour.

Jake: An hour?! Jane-o, can't you do that counting thing?

Jane: It doesn't work if the car is on fire.

411 - Groped By An Angel Quinn starts believing in guardian angels after a near accident with her and a chandelier set up by Jake. She starts believing everything that happens to her is the result of her angel. Not eating bad salad dressing at lunch, not having to give an answer when she didn't know it, getting new jeans after the old ones were ruined, etc. Soon however she begins to doubt her angel after a string of bad luck, splashing soda on her new jeans, leaning on the mixing board, causing Brittany's gift to break. Eventually she runs off crying. Daria, who believes none of the talk of angels, comforts Quinn at her darkest, even forsaking her own beliefs to make her sister feel better. Telling her to believe in whatever makes her feel happy.

Good episode, not great. Daria shows she is growing closer to her sister, even though she'll never admit it to anyone, which shows some growth. But Brittany's party scenes seemed a waste of screen time, as nothing funny came of it except Trent and Max's sub-zero discussion. Time that could've been used to further explore Quinn and her beliefs and motivations behind them. A wasted episode considering what comes up in the very next episode. Few if any good memorable lines.

Lines:

Jane: Guardian angels, huh?

Daria: Hey, at least the Trix rabbit doesn't leave the milk out when he comes to visit. (or something along those lines)

Trent and Max's sub-zero arguments.

412 - Fire! While unable to sleep, Jake gets up for some warm milk, only to leave paper towels near the stove and set them and the kitchen on fire, forcing everyone to live in a hotel for the next 2 weeks. While Helen and Jake are relaxing and enjoying the stay as if it were a second honeymoon, Daria and Quinn are forced to share the same room, which Daria vacates shortly after because of Quinn's incessant prattling on, and heads to Jane's to see if she can spend the night there.

Quinn and the FC enjoy the papmering the hotel offers, and her every need is met by Bobby the bellboy. He gets her a platter for lunch, snacks for her and the rest of the FC, upgrades her to the presidential suite, all in an effort to get a date, which Quinn offers. Sandi, jealous, plants the seed in Quinn's head that Bobby is a stalker, after telling Helen and Jake to get it off her chest, she seems fine. When Helen and Jake get a call regarding Quinn, they fear the worst and a stalker has got her, it turns out Bobby was doing something illegal, not stalking, but deleting the charges from the computer for the stuff he got for Quinn. Leading to an LOL Quinn line which I'll get to.

Daria meanwhile stays at Jane's, where she and Tom's relationship is on the rocks at this point, Jane isn't too trustful of OH because Tom seems overly friendly around her lately. Brightening up whenever she enters the room, going directly to Daria's room while at Jane's, instead of going to Jane, and losing track of the time while discussing Lenin. This causes a rift between the partners in crime, Daria forces the issue by waiting in Jane's room so they can talk, where Jane thinks Daria may be trying to deliberately take Tom from her, which Daria is doing none of, at this time, and Jane admits that jealousy has gotten to her, Daria understands this and the two are back to being friends, for now. At the end Trent is looking for Jane, runs into Daria and in so many words, tells her not to be so oblivious to the fact of what's going on, Tom definitely likes her and doesn't blame her for anything, but doesn't want her to deny something is happening as well, and Daria is lost in thought about the whole situation on the ride home, even missing a classic chance for one of her classic barbs.

The first in the "triangle trilogy" Tension is building up all around. Jane doesn't fully trust Daria anymore, Daria is denying to herself that anything is happening between her and Tom, even though Mr. Oblivious Trent can see it. We can see Jane is not her usual happy-go-lucky self, seeing her first real long term relationship going down the tubes, and suspecting her best friend of causing it. Daria is torn, does she really like Tom, will Jane be OK through all of this, what in the heck is happening to my life? She for once in her life has no idea what to do, and I think it's scaring her. The scenes at the hotel blended into the plot of this ep perfectly, no scenes were wasted, everything in one way or another led back to the main plot, and plenty of funny lines to break up the tension. A great ep.

Lines:

Quinn: The Dutchman Inn? The place with the giant clog?

Quinn: Ewwwww! You're not going to eat all that fat, are you?

Daria: Nope. I'm going to stick it in my boots because I like the squishy-squishy feeling between my toes.

Quinn: EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! Daria! You're making me nauseous!

Jane: Stopped by? Stopped by?! The only way he could've stopped by, was if he went that way to see you before he came this way to see me<it hits her> oh.......

Quinn: You mean I almost went out with.....

Detective: That's right.

Quinn: A computer geek?!

Also the Trent/Daria scene at the end.

413 - Dye! Dye! My Darling In a last attempt to try to keep Tom, Jane decides to try to dye her hair like tiger stripes, and asks Daria to do it for her. Their friendship is strained enough at this point, and not risking further damage, Daria agrees, even though she has no experience for any such thing, and messes it up turning it orange in various spots. Jane imediately throws Daria out, thinking she dyed her hair like that on purpose to take Tom from her. Daria does apologize as they meet again to discuss the recent goings on, Daria doesn't admit to be trying to take Tom, but admits they're better friends than when they first met.

On the way home Tom stops her and asks her a few questions. After a long series of negativity and denials, they kiss, in perhaps the most shocking moment ever in the series. Daria eventually tells Jane, who runs off and argues with Tom over what had happened. They decide to break up amicably after a heart to heart talk. Our partners in crime meet one more time to get stories straight and to take some time apart from each other, Jane very upset at the moment, Daria saddened. Leading us into IIFY?

An excellent episode all around. So many things you'd have never expected, the kiss, Helen putting a huge case aside for her daughter's troubles as of late. The tension at a fever pitch between OH's, an amazing episode that had me guessing throughout.

Lines:

Jane: The Lady or the Tiger? Now you don't have to choose.

Daria: Does this mean you'll be ordering a pizza with entrails?

....Daria: And I'd be stabbing my friend in the back for even considering it.

Tom: And what would that make you?

Daria: Exactly.

Tom: Alright then.
<they begin kissing>

Jane and Tom's scene on a swingset discussing their breaking up.

MOVIE - Is it Fall Yet? 12345678912xxxxxxxxxxxx

501 - Fizz Ed A cola company signs a deal with LHS quickly goes sour for everyone involved, after sales quotas aren't met. A chaotic ep. The timing of this ep made for problems, 3-4 months after IIFY, so no real idea of how the Tom thing was dealt with, glaring errors such as a high school football game being played after the Super Bowl, when HS football is finished in early Dec. at the latest, and Ms. Li's over the top antics make for a sub-par effort. Though seeing the cheerleading squad dressed in soda cans was hilarious.

502 - Sappy Anniversary Daria's growing up. Thanks to Quinn, she frets over something that was previously meaningless to her, her and Tom's 6-month anniversary. Daria is feeling her way around her first "Relation-dateship" thing and it shows here, a common theme of season 5. Her and Tom have a spat, Daria realizes in most cases, she's the one who's being stubborn, apologizes, and everything's okay. It was ok here, but got old as the season wore on.

The subplot here was just as interesting here. Jake taking a job with a dot-com company hoping to make big with the stock portfolio, but he's too late to cash in. Seemingly a master at multi-tasking, everything is going ok until the computer overloads and shuts down, losing everything he had. Left with nothing but the buzzwords that got him the job, he's released, but hired as a consultant for Buzzdome. A nice swipe at the dot-com world, though a bit late, as they were already starting to fall by the wayside when this ep aired, but still good. Helen and Jake's flashback worked well as did the joke that came with it near the end. Overall an above par ep, not a superstar, but very good, lacked a bit in the "main" plot but otherwise, good.

503 - Fat Like Me An episode that shows that no matter what they've been through, Quinn will try to help out Sandi, even if it was for her own reasons. Not too much to say with this one. The plot of Tiffany and Stacy trying to run the FC all by themselves was absolutely priceless. Daria and Jane's bidding war over the outcome of the FC's struggles would be. Even Jake's rants about his cohice of meat being cooked in his hamburgers was funny. Stacy's backbone shows up, finall, even if it's only Tiffany she tells off. Many great lines:

Daria and Jane's numerous terms for money, they came up with more than I knew there were.

Stacy and Tiffany's attemts to get the 3 J's to talk style. <
Daria: ....Jocks on Frocks, sound like a FC meeting to me.

Quinn's sppech to Stacy and Tiffany when she explains she's resigning from the FC aong with Sandi.

Daria and Jane's attempts to manipulate Quinn's actions.

Jane's sigh of frustration as Sandi shows up at school and the FC is restored, thus making her lose her bet.

Excellent episode in so many ways.

504 - Camp Fear Daria and Quinn attend a camp reunion, Trent and Jane enjoy some time in the country, Helen and Jake clean the garage, by now you get the problem here, too much crammed into too little time and few if any definitive endings.

505 - The Story of D After a prompting by Jane to show a story to Tom, Daria gets prodded into submitting the story to a magazine called Musings, that Tom suggested. As she does so, the whole school finds out, thanks again to Mr. O'neill, and everyone congratulates her, even though she doesn't even know if the story will get published. When she finds out it was rejected, she immediately takes it out on Tom, who was doing nothing more than trying to be supportive by offering other options to get it published, thus straining their relationship again. After a run-in with Jake of all people, who was stuck on a thing with showtunes, she realizes what Tom was trying to tell her all along, just because it was rejected once, by one editor doesn't mean someone else won't like it. or that her writing needs to be a bit more polished, as Jake's old showtune wasn't, showing her it was alright. This would've made a better F word episode. After the "eating crow" section of their conversation, Daria and Tom share a kiss, which Helen walks in a just the right time for, which she was trying to prevent the entire episode.

Meanwhile, to attempt something worthwhile, and get a plaque, the FC tries to publish their own newsletter, offering what else, fashion advice, which goes fine except for 2 things, all of their predictions about the upcoming season were wrong, forcing a recall, leading to #2 since only guys apparently bought it, they were never read by anyone. So the FC designs their own plaque and places it by the girls room mirror.

A good premise with focusing on Daria's writing. You could really feel it when she got that rejection notice. The episode went down from there, the blaming and mistrusting of Tom, is starting to get old at this point, and Daria seems as she is almost like a petulant child the way she treats Tom, she still seems to be subconciously sabotaging the relationship, a theme played on too heavily in S5.

Some lines:

Jane: It's about a flesh-eating virus, how is that intimate?

Daria: You'd think it was pretty intimate if it were eating your flesh.

Jake's song:
Were the guys they call cadets
were here to save our nation,
fighting stinky foriegners
right after graduation.

and more, I forget the rest right now.

Stacy: Boy, this volunteering stuff is hard.

Tiffany: Yeah, someone should really pay us for this.

Quinn: We'll just do what we do best.

Sandi: Quinn, no one is going to pay us to eat carrot sticks.

506 - Lucky Strike Lawndale High School has a teacher's strike. Daria works as a substitute thanks to getting the previous one fired, and labeled basically as a child lover who tried to hit of Tiffany. Anyway she ends up taking over O'neill's class, which Quinn just happens to be in. Daria runs the class teaching "Romeo and Juliet" and offers the class a test on the play. Sandi keeps threatening to let loose a secret about Quinn if she can't convince Daria to go easy on them with the test, which she can't. After "help" from Jake, Quinn realizs she knows her stuff about the play, and sets off to study. She gets a B on the test while the rest of the FC get D's. Sandi threatens some more, and before she can tell her secret Quinn finally reveals that she and Daria are sisters. A faux-shocked Sandi, tries to pass it off as something major, but Stacy and Tiffany already knew, but were being polite about it, Sandi, humiliated again just sulks. Afterwards Quinn and Daria reach a higher level in their sisterly relationships through this ordeal. Quinn respects her sister and vice-versa.

Meanwhile, Jane and Trent actually help the teachers with the strike. Jane helps with new posters, and Trent and O'neill come up with a protest song. DeMartino and Ms. Li are in a stalemate over the contract, which she finally signs, with a head fully of cloudiness from lack of sleep.

Many of the things we were waiting for for 5 years come to pass in this episode. Quinn finally admits that Daria is her sister, and she finally shows off the brain that we all knew she had but kept hidden. Also a closer bond between the Morgerdorffer sisters was established here. The teacher's strike blended with everything very well and wasn't intrusive, and actually led to the above taking place. Excellent.

Some lines:

Mrs. Stoller: Darlene, where are you going?

Daria: To get Daria.

Quinn: ...besides, why shouldn't I act sisterly towards her, after all.....she's my sister.

Mr. DeMartino:....I can do anything! Even teach Kevin. So tell me son, which war freed us from the iron hand of Britain? (paraphrased)

Kevin: The Gulf War?
<DeMartino sobs>
Brittany: Mr D? Do you want to share?

Jane: The joy of teaching didn't last long with this one.

Daria: You've got to grab it while you can.

507 - Art Burn After wrecking a gazebo while making a Mystik Spiral video, Wind comes out of nowhere with that being a naming gazebo, so Jane and Trent offer to get it rebuilt. Jane gets the job to pay for it, painting recreations of famous works of art, she ends up the best they've got and is soon very busy, too busy to do her own stuff. Hoping to get out of this easily, Jane tries to see of Gary is an art counterfeitor, which it turns out he's not obviously, so Jane eventually quits as she is burnt out on the copy job and would like to restart her own work.

Meanwhile Trent hires the contrators, who are the laziest bunch of @#$%$#!&@! in the world, when Trent tries to prod them along, he ends up joining them in a nap. Jane returns home, orders the gazebo rebuilt in 4 hours, volunteering Trent for manual labor. They get it up, only to find their parents wanted it torn down anyways, as the story they told Wind was just to keep him from changing his name to Ronald.

The FC wants to sue a charicature artist for an unflattering drawing, they obviously don't know what a charicature artist specializes in. After an uproar, ot ends up at Stacy's, with the friends forever at the top, and her with the only beautiful picture of the FC.

I thought at first the gazebo thing was a stepping stone to an episode about the Lane family history, after hearing about the naming gazebo story, it wasn't, but it should've been. It would've made for a better story.

This wasn't bad by any means, watching Jane transform from an art lover to someone doing it as work as a chore, almost getting sick of the whole thing, some more insight into her character, she's over the Tom thing, as their conversation at the Art fair seems to show. The 3rd act completely loses it as the partners in crime go on a forgery hunt. Dumb. The FC subplot had more interest. It had me guesing, what could possibly be in that drawing, it kept my interest throughout. Still a good episode, but not a great one.

Some lines:

Trent: Hello? Paramedics? Do you fix gazebos?

Jane: Use your womanly attributes and create a distraction.
Daria: I'll give birth.
Jane: That'll work.

508 - One J at a Time Quinn decides to try and get a steady boyfriend after seeing how Daria and Tom's relationship is going. Thanks to some "helpful" advice from Daria, she tries going out with Jamie, who makes a valiant effort, but can't last through Quinn's phone marathon. Joey's next, but loses immediately when he can't get tickets for the Guys to Guys concert. Jeffy makes it to dinner where Tom is also invited. Quinn tries to make pet names and talk cemetary plots with Jeffy, as Daria and Tom were jokingly doing beforehand. Jake who has been after a squirrel in the yard for the longest time, lets Tom and Jeffy in on it, who all in a fit of G-rated male bonding, all go out to catch it, then upon doing so, go out and release it into the woods, and then to the nearest track for some go-cart action.

After Jeffy leaves, Quinn believes she isn't mature enough for a steady boyfriend admitting Helen was right in their earlier conversation, which Helen said it takes a lot on maturity to have a steady boyfriend, but not having one doesn't make you immature, Quinn now feeling better, is off to dump Jeffy and resume her life as it was.

Another great episode here. Daria's "advice" to Quinn in some cases was just hilarious. Jake's attempts to get the squirrel were hilarious, even if he was the second coming of Homer Simpson. Daria's insecurity of having Tom over extends more to her father's well being, than of her own, afraid Tom will use his razor-sharp wit and cut Jake down, which he doesn't, but Daria proves she cares more about her father than she is willing to let on.

The line:
See sig. below.

Tom/Jake/Jeffy: Whoomp! There it is!, Whoomp! There it is!, Whoomp! There it is!...

509 - Life in the Past Lane Jane meets a new boyfriend who is into the whole "retro" thing. Dresses like the 40's, 50's and 60's including zoot suits, fedoras and the like. Daria and Tom aren't too crazy about him as they see Nathan as a jerk, but won't tell Jane as she seems happy to be around him, and they don't want to disrupt anything after the "triangle" fiasco. Jane goes as far as dressing up in period garb all day long, even at school, though she realizes it's all for fun. However they get in a fight over Jane's choice of clothing for Upchuck's magic show, Jane sees how passionately Nathan is into the retro thing, almost too seriously, and after he questions her owning sweatpants, she tells him to get out. Afterwards they all meet up and Jane admits what Daria and Tom knew all along. Daria also realizes it wa all in fun and will try to remember that if she ever has any.

Meanwhile, Upchuck is doing magic to try to lure a lady into his lair, and it actually works. Stacy, who is so intrigued by a trick he's done, won't leave him alone until she finds out. Later at the magic show, she appears as Upchuck's assistant on stage, shocking everyone. Going along with the trick, as if she's forgotten something and begins crying hysterically because it appears Upchuck is locked in the trunk and suffocating, after another snide comment by Sandi, Stacy retaliates with the very line Sandi used earlier and upstages her, as Upchuck reappears from the back of the auditorium unharmed.

This episode didn't really make a lot of sense to me. The scenes with Upchuck and Stacy and the magic show were funny, but the entire thing with Jane really did nothing for me. I didn't like Nathan at all as a person, I can't buy the fact that Jane would get so into this that she'd dress up all day, even to school. When they'd go out I could understand, but all day long? Made no real sense. At least they didn't go into another round of Daria/Tom relationdateship problems again as they could've after Daria's "rut" comments. This episode was well liked by many, I just don't see it myself.

Lines:

Jane: I'll meet up with you guys at the pizza place, first I need to pick up an eraser, a nice big cute one.

Upchuck: There are so many things I can't get out of my head, like that dream about the mermaids and the fudge sauce......

Jane: I bought tickets for Upchuck the irritating, you know, first the freaky, then the tiki.

Sandi: Good thing he's buried alive in there, so you won't have to seek your revenge on him for humiliating you like this.

Stacy<stops crying> Oh, Sandi, you are so naieve!

510 - Aunt Nauseam Erin and Brian are getting a divorce and Helen is roped into handling the legal proceedings by her mother, which ends up with Rita staying over while Helen does all of the paperwork. Jake flees the house because he knows how those 2 can get into fights, and this time is no exception. They fight over everything, past and present, and by the time Erin calls and says the divorce is off, the battle is well under way with no visible signs of slowing so Daria calls Amy for reinforcements. Turns out she's also capable of getting drawn into these arguments as well so it's Daria and Quinn to the rescue. By imitating the elder sisters, the younger ones show them exactly how foolish they look when they fight. Meanwhile Tom tries to help Daria through the family crisis, but is rebuffed everytime, until Daria realzes, through Amy, that he's only trying to help and not barging in just for the sake of it.

Good episode that gets deeper into the Barksdale family history, and also foils the Amy as savior myth. She's just as prone to bouts of stupidity just like everyone else. Bonus continuity points for learning of what's going on in Erin's marriage. Time was taken away from the main plot for a totally pointless thing about Stacy, Tiffany, and owning the same dress. But otherwise a strong episode.

Lines:

The Daria-Quinn spiel showing the elder sisters how silly they looked.

Jane: You're not even excited about having a ringside seat to your cousins gutwrenching breakup?

Daria: I know, it's like I've forgotten how to have fun.

511 - Prize Fighters Daria applies for a college scholarship from the Wizard foundation, along with Upchuck, and Jodie she is elected as a finalist for the award. After learning of Wizard's questionable business practices from Tom, she feels torn about applying, yet does so, and actually goes out of the way and sees a coach to help her chances, even though it is totally against her principles. Eventually she just decides to be herself, which is tantamount to her not wanting the prize, which none of the 3 win. Jane feels left out of this as she isn't as smart as the rest, and accuses Daria of selling out while she's trying to win the prize, which to an extent she was.

A short summary for an episode that was short on alot of things. Plot. execution of said lack of plot, ugh. This episode was blah and not really worth the time.

Since I usually do this and I couldn't find any, the best line from this ep:

Jodie: She's starting to sound like you.

Daria: Does that mean I'm starting to sound like you?

Brittany: Hi!

Daria: If any of us starts to sound like her, it's time to panic.

512 - My Night at Daria's "My Night at Daria's" Tom and Daria enjoy a date reading together, but both fall asleep while doing so, finally at around 4am they wake up and Tom attempts to sneak out, only to be caught by Jake who is out of it from having too much sake' while trying to woo a potential client, he unknowingly lets him out, mentions it as a side note to Helen, who gives the 3rd degree to Daria almost immediately. Daria explains to her what happened and Helen is ok with it, Quinn, however, hears only that Tom spent the night in Daria's room, and immediately jumps to the conclusion of sex and blabs it to Stacy, who immediately blabs it to everyone at school.

Daria finds out about these after everyone at school tells her what they thought happened, and goes straight to the source, Quinn. Once she gets the idea that the next hot topic will push her news out of the spotlight, she gets her revenge on Quinn, by telling Jane so that K+B can hear Quinn has a terminal case of toe fungus, and the rumors start to fly about her, leaving Daria'a sex life in the dust.

The question does get placed in her head however, does it really mean they're in a relationship if they haven't had sex yet? Does it measure the entire worth of it? She discusses this with Tom, and after many mild spats over various items decides that she is ready, and after a few more spats, finally decide to go ahead the next Saturday, Jane's happy for her, but Daria is much less than thrilled about the prospect. The big night comes and Daria gets cold feet. Fearing the end because of this, she leaves Tom a goodbye note, figuring the relationship was over. Tom tells her this isn't the case at all, and was and still is comfortable with their situation as it is now. And the bond gets even closer with them.

Jake, meanwhile, gets a parasite from a sushi restaurant he was trying to get into business with. He was going to tell them off but then he got the job. So he kept his mouth shut, not to ruin the deal, but after awhile he has enough and tells the guy what he thinks of him and tells him goodbye. This at least gets Jake talking to Daria again after he was freaked out by the idea of his little girl having sex.

Wow, that's all I have to say about this one. The show finally handled the issue of sex and handled it about as well as could possibly be done. Another side we rarely see from Daria, she was scared to death of that much intimacy and it really freaked her out. After coming close to the end for her and Tom yet again, she realizes this has made her stronger and their relationship as well, she realizes how lucky she is to have someone like Tom. The rumor mill at the high school was typical for any high school you see around the country, and it tried to chew Daria up and spit her out, all thanks to Quinn, she got a paticularly nasty revenge in this deal. Even Jake and his sushi sideplot were good in this ep. They broke the palpable tension of the will they or won't they, and even intermixed with the main plot at the very end. Super episode.

Lines:

Upchuck: Is that the lovely Miss Morgendorffer?

Daria: Congratulations, you've passed your vision test, please move over to line 2 for your written.

Jake: Sushi sucks, sake' rocks, hey I gotta remember that!<burps>

Daria: Does that mean you and Mack have....been responsible?

Jane: I've been expecting your call, but lease leave out the cries of unbridled passion and some of the squishier details.

Daria: What are you talking about?

Jane: You mean you don't know?

Daria: What? Just tell me.

Jane: There's this rumor going around that you and Tom slept together.

Daria: Oh, God!

Jane: And, Daria, since when do you own a pair of black high heels?

Daria: So we've decided to sublimate our urges and join a motorcycle gang.

Helen: All right, just make sure you call home on Sundays.

Daria: Hey!

Helen: Ha!

513 - Boxing Daria A leftover refrigerator box gets back deep seated memories for Daria to come to the surface of a fight that Helen and Jake had one night when she was about 5-6, Daria runs off in Helen's SUV and offers to take up Tom's offer to the cove, on the way there she get involved in a multiple car pileup. On the way home, Daria stops off at a cafe where she asks Jane to come see her, as the person she trusts the most, Jane, comes into the picture to help straighten things out around elsewhere.

Another excellent episode. We've got Daria questioning who she is and everything she does before coming to the realization that she and her overintelligence are what helped to cause the problem they had. She finds out she is who she is, and shes just perfectly much better about everything.

Lines:
Jane: Kind of like the sound of the breeze rustling through cardboard, quite soothing, really.

Quinn: Stupid freakin' carton, hard freakin' labor, I'm only freaking human, how much can one girl take, especially an enormously freakin' popular one.
