We're starting to get to the end of this round of voting. The 13's will
probably be done Tue. 1/8, meaning at exactly 12:01 am on Sat. morning ET 1/12,
the first round of voting for all episodes will be closed, and the Perfect
Season will be announced. Also, the runoff vote for the wildcard episodes will
begin immediately after the winners of the Perfect Season are announced, the
runoff vote will end at 12:01 am Mon. morning ET on 1/14, the winners from that
will be announced and the second round will begin immediately after.
Now
without any further interruption, here are the 12's.
112- "The
Teachings of Don Jake" To try to help relieve stress, Helen takes Jake and the
girls off camping. We hear for the first time Jake rant about his father, I
believe, giving us some new insight to him at the time. Everyone attempts to
tell stories around the campfire with various outcomes. Jake's rant leaves
everyone annoyed, Helen's is a vampire tale that gets too close to an R rating
and tones it down just as the good parts arrive and Daria and Quinn are none too
pleased. Quinn's story is only scary to her and Daria's makes everyone sick. The
next day after a berry breakfast, everyone except Daria, who didn't eat hers,
start hallucinating, they had eaten psychotropic berries and started running
over the woods like maniacs. Luckily, thanks to Helen sneaking a cell phone
along, Daria is able to get everyone to 911 and have their stomachs pumped.
Jane and Trent are off to the family reunion, where: they offend their
Aunt Bernice and her hats, Trent is, I think, lovingly called a bum by his Uncle
Max, Grandma chews Jane out, and nearly blows her eardrum out, are forced to
share a room with 4 other people, eventually steal their Aunt's rental car and
get the heck out of there.
Very underrated episode by most, I'd say its
among the top 3 of S1. The camping scenes were funny, and most of the scenes at
the Lane famly reunion were funny as well. Jake rants about his father for the
first time we know of, Helen shows she just can't entirely leave work, and Daria
shows her grace under fire, I'm not sure I could be that calm if my family was
acting like that out in the middle of nowhere. Nothing deep about this episode,
just a good solid ep.
Lines:
Daria: I hope the raging envy you're
feeling won't hurt our friendship.
Jane: I DO envy you.
Daria:
Then I'm afraid the fever has reached your brain, and you have to be
destroyed.
Grandma: Come closer, Jane.
Jane: Yes,
Grandma?
Grandma: Closer.
Jane: Yes, Grandma?
Grandma:
Closer.
Jane: Yes, Grandma?
Grandma: <screams> What the hell
is wrong with you?!
The whole "spirit animal"
chase.
Daria: Okay, family's gone mad, no one knows were here, no way
to contact civilization because Mother made big deal about cutting off all
communication, what to do......<cell phone rings>.....rely on Mother's
hypocrisy to see us through this crisis.
212- "Pierce Me" The shipper
ep to end all shipper eps. Trent calls Daria to ask her something, flustering
her, but when Jane comes in the room he gets secretive and hangs up. He heads on
over to Daria's house and we go to..... commercial, big teasers. After getting
the 3rd degree from the parents, he asks to help pick out a birthday present for
Jane. While out and stil somewhat flustered, she goes against her normal
judgement and gets her navel pierced. With Trent's help and his hand, Daria
makes through the procedure alive and well.
Meanwhile, Quinn and Helen
are prepping for a mother-daughter fashion show fundraiser for school. When
Sandi gets involved, Quinn becomes ultra-competitive, coaching Helen, going for
beauty treatments together, shopping together, all to get ready for the fashion
show, in which they promptly embarass themselves when they trip and fall
together on the runway
Back to Daria, when she goes to bed that night,
the hole closes up. Upset she heads to Jane's all worried over Trent's reaction,
which is calm as usual, and offers to get her a tatoo when she's ready. At the
next Spiral gig, she reveals she finally got Jane art supplies, and Trent wrote
her a song in that typical Trent wrote it, so it makes little sense style, we
all know and love. When she gets home she gets the 3rd degree from the parents
about the navel ring, after Quinn told them about it to try to make herself feel
better about the fashion show debacle. But of course by this time it's gone, and
Quinn is embarassed yet again.
Excellent episode. A side of Daria we
rarely see. Getting flustered around Trent, getting her navel pierced, acting
like your typical girl who does something stupid for a guy, even the great Daria
does a stupid thing now and then. The crush is at full bloom with this episode.
The fashion show scenes, while funny, took away from the main plot, and weren't
related in the least except for Quinn finding out about both in the middle of
the 3rd act. Took time away from what many wanted to see, Trent/Daria. Still an
excellent ep.
Lines:
Trent: Why would a cool guy like me ever
write a song about someone like you?
Daria: Psst.
Jane: Oh,
no, the toilet is talking to me again.
Daria: Psst. Lane!
Jane:
Talking toilet, you may call me Jane<sees Daria>, oh it's you.....did I
see what I think I just saw?
Daria: You didn't see a weeping virgin did
you?
Daria: Trying to brighten your ho-hum life with a little
illusion? <yawns> Boy, I'm tired. 'Night everyone.
Quinn: But she
was pierced! Pierced, I tell you! Oh the humanity.....
312- "Just Add
Water" The whole school goes on a mandatory Casino Night fundraiser aboard a
cruise ship.
Daria and Jane try to find a place to sleep after spending
the last night watching an entire "Sick, Sad World" marathon. They
can't.
Jake attempts to woo the owners of the boat to try to land a
consulting job, and Helen heads off to the poker tables.
He doesn't get it
and gets hit on by the owners wife all night long.
Quinn tries avoiding
everyone when her date, an international model named Marco fails to show up, to
avoid the rumor that she was stood up, it doesn't work.
Mr. Demartino,
tries to get out of the trip, because he has a gambling problem, yet gets pulled
in, loses all of his money, and has to try to pawn his watch.
The ship
runs into a garbage scow when a drunk pilot gives the wheel to Jake and he
leaves it to find Helen, luckily the water is only about 3-4 feet deep at the
crash site and everyone is ok, except for Sandi, whose date dumps her after the
crash.
There you have it, "Fair En...., I mean "The Dar....., I mean
"Just Add Water" Basically the above two episodes rehashed, with a new location
and repackaged as a new episode, Titanic references a year and a half after the
fact, I feared at this point the show was losing steam, If S4 hadn't already
been guaranteed at the time, I'd have sworn they were trying their hardest to
kill the show. This one was just painful to watch.
Lines: Only one decent
one:
SSW Announcer: Meet the cannibal with a heart, quick, before he eats
it! Next on SSW!
412- "Fire!" While unable to sleep, Jake gets up for
some warm milk, only to leave paper towels near the stove and set them and the
kitchen on fire, forcing everyone to live in a hotel for the next 2 weeks. While
Helen and Jake are relaxing and enjoying the stay as if it were a second
honeymoon, Daria and Quinn are forced to share the same room, which Daria
vacates shortly after because of Quinn's incessant prattling on, and heads to
Jane's to see if she can spend the night there.
Quinn and the FC enjoy
the papmering the hotel offers, and her every need is met by Bobby the bellboy.
He gets her a platter for lunch, snacks for her and the rest of the FC, upgrades
her to the presidential suite, all in an effort to get a date, which Quinn
offers. Sandi, jealous, plants the seed in Quinn's head that Bobby is a stalker,
after telling Helen and Jake to get it off her chest, she seems fine. When Helen
and Jake get a call regarding Quinn, they fear the worst and a stalker has got
her, it turns out Bobby was doing something illegal, not stalking, but deleting
the charges from the computer for the stuff he got for Quinn. Leading to an LOL
Quinn line which I'll get to.
Daria meanwhile stays at Jane's, where she
and Tom's relationship is on the rocks at this point, Jane isn't too trustful of
OH because Tom seems overly friendly around her lately. Brightening up whenever
she enters the room, going directly to Daria's room while at Jane's, instead of
going to Jane, and losing track of the time while discussing Lenin. This causes
a rift between the partners in crime, Daria forces the issue by waiting in
Jane's room so they can talk, where Jane thinks Daria may be trying to
deliberately take Tom from her, which Daria is doing none of, at this time, and
Jane admits that jealousy has gotten to her, Daria understands this and the two
are back to being friends, for now. At the end Trent is looking for Jane, runs
into Daria and in so many words, tells her not to be so oblivious to the fact of
what's going on, Tom definitely likes her and doesn't blame her for anything,
but doesn't want her to deny something is happening as well, and Daria is lost
in thought about the whole situation on the ride home, even missing a classic
chance for one of her classic barbs.
The first in the "triangle trilogy"
Tension is building up all around. Jane doesn't fully trust Daria anymore, Daria
is denying to herself that anything is happening between her and Tom, even
though Mr. Oblivious Trent can see it. We can see Jane is not her usual
happy-go-lucky self, seeing her first real long term relationship going down the
tubes, and suspecting her best friend of causing it. Daria is torn, does she
really like Tom, will Jane be OK through all of this, what in the heck is
happening to my life? She for once in her life has no idea what to do, and I
think it's scaring her. The scenes at the hotel blended into the plot of this ep
perfectly, no scenes were wasted, everything in one way or another led back to
the main plot, and plenty of funny lines to break up the tension. A great
ep.
Lines:
Quinn: The Dutchman Inn? The place with the giant
clog?
Quinn: Ewwwww! You're not going to eat all that fat, are
you?
Daria: Nope. I'm going to stick it in my boots because I like the
squishy-squishy feeling between my toes.
Quinn: EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
Daria! You're making me nauseous!
Jane: Stopped by? Stopped by?! The
only way he could've stopped by, was if he went that way to see you before he
came this way to see me<it hits her> oh.......
Quinn: You mean
I almost went out with.....
Detective: That's right.
Quinn: A
computer geek?!
Also the Trent/Daria scene at the
end.
512- "My Night at Daria's" Tom and Daria enjoy a date reading
together, but both fall asleep while doing so, finally at around 4am they wake
up and Tom attempts to sneak out, only to be caught by Jake who is out of it
from having too much sake' while trying to woo a potential client, he
unknowingly lets him out, mentions it as a side note to Helen, who gives the 3rd
degree to Daria almost immediately. Daria explains to her what happened and
Helen is ok with it, Quinn, however, hears only that Tom spent the night in
Daria's room, and immediately jumps to the conclusion of sex and blabs it to
Stacy, who immediately blabs it to everyone at school.
Daria finds out
about these after everyone at school tells her what they thought happened, and
goes straight to the source, Quinn. Once she gets the idea that the next hot
topic will push her news out of the spotlight, she gets her revenge on Quinn, by
telling Jane so that K+B can hear Quinn has a terminal case of toe fungus, and
the rumors start to fly about her, leaving Daria'a sex life in the
dust.
The question does get placed in her head however, does it really
mean they're in a relationship if they haven't had sex yet? Does it measure the
entire worth of it? She discusses this with Tom, and after many mild spats over
various items decides that she is ready, and after a few more spats, finally
decide to go ahead the next Saturday, Jane's happy for her, but Daria is much
less than thrilled about the prospect. The big night comes and Daria gets cold
feet. Fearing the end because of this, she leaves Tom a goodbye note, figuring
the relationship was over. Tom tells her this isn't the case at all, and was and
still is comfortable with their situation as it is now. And the bond gets even
closer with them.
Jake, meanwhile, gets a parasite from a sushi
restaurant he was trying to get into business with. He was going to tell them
off but then he got the job. So he kept his mouth shut, not to ruin the deal,
but after awhile he has enough and tells the guy what he thinks of him and tells
him goodbye. This at least gets Jake talking to Daria again after he was freaked
out by the idea of his little girl having sex.
Wow, that's all I have to
say about this one. The show finally handled the issue of sex and handled it
about as well as could possibly be done. Another side we rarely see from Daria,
she was scared to death of that much intimacy and it really freaked her out.
After coming close to the end for her and Tom yet again, she realizes this has
made her stronger and their relationship as well, she realizes how lucky she is
to have someone like Tom. The rumor mill at the high school was typical for any
high school you see around the country, and it tried to chew Daria up and spit
her out, all thanks to Quinn, she got a paticularly nasty revenge in this deal.
Even Jake and his sushi sideplot were good in this ep. They broke the palpable
tension of the will they or won't they, and even intermixed with the main plot
at the very end. Super episode.
Lines:
Upchuck: Is that the lovely
Miss Morgendorffer?
Daria: Congratulations, you've passed your vision
test, please move over to line 2 for your written.
Jake: Sushi sucks,
sake' rocks, hey I gotta remember that!<burps>
Daria: Does that
mean you and Mack have....been responsible?
Jane: I've been expecting
your call, but lease leave out the cries of unbridled passion and some of the
squishier details.
Daria: What are you talking about?
Jane: You
mean you don't know?
Daria: What? Just tell me.
Jane: There's this
rumor going around that you and Tom slept together.
Daria: Oh,
God!
Jane: And, Daria, since when do you own a pair of black high
heels?
Daria: So we've decided to sublimate our urges and join a
motorcycle gang.
Helen: All right, just make sure you call home on
Sundays.
Daria: Hey!
Helen: Ha!
My favorite: No real
doubt about it here, all are very good episodes except one, but I have to go
with 512-"My Night At Daria's" for their excellent handling of the sex issue
we've waited 5 seasons for.
Followed by: 412- "Fire!", 112-"The Teachings
of Don Jake", 212- "Pierce Me", and a distant last, 312-"Just Add
Water".
That's all
folks!

>112- "The Teachings of Don Jake"
Next to TMC and The
Invitation, one of my favourite S1 eps. Some brilliant lines, Jake's eyeballs,
Jane's grandma, glitter berries, and... "she'll have to call you
back."
>212- "Pierce Me" The shipper ep to end all shipper
eps.
Ha! If only... Not as well-plotted as TRW. Blah. Talking toilet bit
was cool though, if only because of all the times Lew's fic wound up quoting
it.
>312- "Just Add Water"
Follow Daria and Jane's lead and
catch some Z's. Even so, this isn't *that* bad. No, really...
>412-
"Fire!"
Okay, I'll (breiefly) reiterate a few of the usual arguments
against this ep:
1. The serious Daria plot and less serious Quinn plot
don't mesh too well.
2. Romance BAD! Satire GOOD! (At least in the case
of _Daria_. Unless someone can dig up some Lost S4 Ep which deals adequately
with Daria and Tom's evolving relationship between now and ILAP.)
3.
Daria's apparent ignorance of the irony and abnormality of her situation --- or,
as Kara Wild put it, "why didn't she ever stop and say, 'Hold on a second, when
did my life become _Dawson's Creek_?'"
All I can add to these is that the
writers perhaps weren't as clueless about #3 as we all thought. Notice the title
of this episode --- "Fire!". Notice the title of the Paula Cole album which has
the _Dawson's Creek_ theme song on it --- "This Fire".
It's a conspiracy,
I tell you...
>512- "My Night at Daria's"
Okay, am I the only
one who'd like to see Daniel Suni review this ep--- no, strike that. I'd like to
see him go over the script with two different-coloured highlighter pens,
indicating the bits he did and didn't like and noting the many changes in
opinion in mid-scene.
Oh, my point? This episode, from a strict S1
interp, is about 50% parody of the treatment of teenage sex in the media and
society at large, and 50% what the other half parodies. Not *bad*, certainly it
could have been a lot worse, but... well, Daria's revenge on Quinn seemed a bit
*too* nasty to me, remembering Monster and GBAA. That, and Daria would look
terrible in heels.
Overall: 112 a clear winner, followed distantly by
512, 312 limping along behind, and the other two anywhere as long as it's
nowhere 'round me.

In order of preference:
#1 My Night at Daria's: I was expecting the
worst, but what a surprise. There's no pretense that teen sex doesn't happen,
and no preaching. But the episode ends up resting on the wisdom of waiting for
the moment to be mutually right regardless of whatever expectations the other
person (or society) might have. If anything, it takes Daria uncharacteristically
long to see this. Also, the condom scene was slightly puzzling (maybe somebody
felt they had to wedge the safe sex message in there somehow, even if the
characters aren't going to need it yet). Overall, this rose way above both the
exploitative retardation that pervades the media regarding teen sex and the
stilted moralism often offered up in response to it.
#2 Fire: This one
just had a tight combination of humor and insight. Trent gets to display the
cool, laid back sagacity that lies hidden behind that torpor. And we get a few
surprise moments from Daria (so at ease around Tom that she actually laughs, so
confused by her situation that she fails to offer Helen a wisecrack). I did have
a hard time believing that Tom was hitting it off THIS well with Daria -- never
before or since have we seen them this caught up in each others' interests and
views.
#3 Pierce Me: Jane's mischief-making around Daria and Trent was
one of the subtlest and best running gags on the show, and watching her snoop in
the background during the phone scene busted me up as much as anything in the
entire series. I thought Trent and Daria behaved slightly off-character (with
Daria a little too susceptible and Trent too cajoling), so the conclusion seemed
a bit forced. Still a great episode.
#4 Teachings of Don Jake: I don't
remember much about Jane & Trent's relatives here, so I guess they didn't
leave as much of an impression as the siblings in "Lane Miserables". The
psychedelic goings on were just plain fun and brought back some fond memories
of... er, never mind that. Good episode, but it faces some fierce competition in
this grouping.
#5 Just Add Water: I have a high tolerance for improbable
plots ("Daria Hunter", "Malled", ect). But this one didn't work even for me.
Quinn's charade is by far the best thing going on here. DeMartino has his
moments as well. Nothing else really rises above the silliness of the
premise.

M'kay, I'll keep it brief. The only problem I have is two really are equal
IMHO. 1-My night at Daria's- Say what you want, S5 wasn't up to our
expectations, this ep did it right.
2-Teachings of Don Jake- Technically
equal, not as much impact as MNaD
3-Pierce Me- Daria! Trent! Teenage crush!
body modification! What else can you say?
4-Fire!- Well handled beginning of
the trilogy, Exploration of the dynamics, "B" story, Almost seemed Sandi was
truly concerned About Quinn? You tell me...
5- Sorry, as much as I can test
the bounds of incredulity, both "A"&"B"plots badly handled, DTAH made more
sense. Only real loser here.

I thought this would be a lot harder, but, on review, it wasn't. I like all
five, but one stands over the others.
>112- "The Teachings of Don
Jake
Good episode. Nothing like watching one's entire family freak out to
really break up a camping trip.
>212- "Pierce Me"
Fine episode.
Trent's attempt to communicate with Daria by phone was fantastic...as was Jane's
reaction when she hit redial. Then all the fun of Dega Street...and the way
getting a birthday present for Jane involved piercing Daria's belly
button...
>312- "Just Add Water"
Good, but probably the least
of the bunch. (Contrived situation, mostly.) But I liked Helen and Ms. Li's
high-stakes poker game. (Helen would've won it, only she didn't.) And Mr.
DeMartino wandering around trying to sell his watch was worth
it.
>412- "Fire!"
You could say this was the first of a
two-parter with "Dye! Dye! My Darling," since it all leads one into another. So
many things to touch on, like Quinn and the Fashion Club monopolizing hotel
services, the sight of Penny Lane's room, all the way down to the deteriorating
relationship between Jane and Tom, the growing one between Daria and Tom, and
the fast-deteriorating one between Daria and Jane.
>512- "My Night at
Daria's"
Had its moments. Handled the would-be event with some
sensitivity. Confirmed beyond any doubt that Quinn is a blabbermouth. Daria's
revenge was sweet, too.
As for rankings, my obvious choice is:
212
"Pierce Me."
followed closely by
412 "Fire!"
112 "The Teachings
of Don Jake"
followed by
512 "My Night at
Daria's"
and
312 "Just Add Water"
in the rear. All were,
really, side-splittingly funny and most dealt sensitively with the characters
and their lives. But "Pierce Me" has so much going for it, it's got my
vote.
Now, the "13s," they'll be tough.

112: "The Teachings of Don Jake"
Funny. The parallel plots work
well together, though I don't
think much of Vince and Amanda abandoning Jane
and Trent to
face the hostile squares. The Spirit Quest of Clan
Morgendorffer
is pretty funny, and the ways that Jake, Helen, and Quinn
come
slowly unglued work really well.
212: "Pierce Me"
Lo and
behold! Daria is human and everything. "You did something
stupid for a guy."
The B plot is again very funny, and possibly
the first indication that deep
down Quinn is mostly Helen's daughter.
They share an intensively competitive
spirit (which is highlighted
in their shared song in "Daria!"). I also think
this represents
the nadir of Daria/Quinn interaction. Quinn's in pain and the
first
thing she thinks of is making Daria suffer. I don't think
they're
cruel to each other on a regular basis at any other point in the
series like they are in Season 2.
And of course, the A plot. Classic
shipper stuff, and we meet the
mysterious Monique, as well as later fanfic
cliche Axl. Good stuff
all around.
312: "Just Add Water"
The
worst of the "ensemble" episodes, it puts even "The Daria Hunter"
to shame.
Wildly implausible, and nothing we haven't seen before
in terms of Fashion
Club politics, the Morgendorffers' marriage,
or the general interaction of
the students. Daria and Jane aren't
even guest stars in their own show.
They're more like cameos.
And Daria does something nice for Quinn. Stop
the... *yawn*... presses.
One nice thing: DeMartino makes his respect for
Daria clear, and his
compliment to Jane is funny: For being so...
angular.
412: "Fire!"
Fire! was the third or fourth episode of
season 4 that I saw, and
I had no idea who Tom was, let alone that a love
triangle was
developing. It didn't play very well for me then. OTOH,
now
that I've seen the rest of the eps, it makes much more sense.
The
"triangle" elements of the plot are well-handled, Trent gets
a nice scene,
and Jodie shows that she is interested in Jane as
a person, and not just an
extension of Daria.
Quinn's plot, I don't like at all. It doesn't do
anything for me,
and Helen and Jake's behavior is bizarre enough that they
should
consider another weekend in the spa from "Psycho Therapy," but
with
much more medication.
512: "My Night at Daria's"
Oh no!
The sex episode!
Actually, it's very good. Daria behaves badly towards
Tom, but this
time it's a realistic kind of badly, not Evil Pod Daria. I
don't
think it's unreasonable for OH to be as confused as she was in
this
episode, and I think her interaction with Tom is carried off
well.
The rumor mill is pretty amusing, as are Quinn's lingering
intimacy
issues:
"I don't want to know how coupled people
behave."
Jake, though, got all the best lines:
"Sushi sucks! Sake
rocks!"
"Help me, Helen. Before the madness sets
in."
Winner:
"Pierce Me" by a nose, since MNaD is a bit too series
and tToDJ is a bit too ludicrous
"My Night at Daria's"
"The Teachings of
Don Jake"
"Fire!"
And as a measure of how inferior it is to four fine
episodes...
"Just Add Water"

I agree, and along with being confused she was frightened, even if
she didn't spend the episode screaming and crying about the potential loss of
her virginity. She handled the situation true to her nature, and in the end Tom
let her know in no uncertain terms that if she doesn't sleep with him, he won't
leave. Maybe they will have sex in college if they don't break up in IICY. I
still say they should know that both their parents are sexually active simply
because they're from the generation that advocated "free love," and/or sexual
promiscurity, if you choose to call it that.

Well, I'm still tied between "Pierce Me" and "My Night at
Daria's." I think it's possible that if you combine the two episodes, she
wouldn't be as scared to go through with her first time, but that's just my
opinion. Anyway, for the rest, I think after that it's "The Teachings of Don
Jake," "Fire!," and "Just Add Water," on the bottom for me too.

Oh yay, another group where I've seen all 5. That makes what, two such
groups? ^_^
112 - Where can I get me some of them glitter berries?
212 -
If I 'd seen this *before* "I Loathe a Parade" and related eps, I just might
have been convinced to join the 'shipper crowd. The entire first act is
hilarious. And of course, when Jake opens the door at the end of the first act,
you can hear his first post-commercial line a mile away: "Quinn, your date is
here!"
312 - Sucks, sucks, sucks. And I haven't even seen what the plot was
reportedly a rehash of - either of them.
412 - Another Jane-Tom fight, coming
off two eps in a row that he wasn't in at all. Good line (and I'm guessing on
this):
Tom - I've always had a thing for Stalin. Anoyone who changes their
name from "Dzugashvili" (anyone know the spelling?) to "Man of Steel" gets
points in my book.
Daria - Oh, come on. You and I *both* know he only did
that so his name would fit on his luggage tags.
512 - An alright ep, but it
didn't do much for me.
final verdict - 212/112 tie for best, 412 pulls in a
close second, 512 is somewhere not far behind that, and 312 should really be
cellarized. (Is that a word?)

The winner is... Fire!, because it was, well, interesting.
Worst
would be (yes) Just Add Water.
Somewhere between those, Pierce Me,
Teachings, and My Night are duking it out.

I concur with your rankings, except I'd put "Fire!" (#412) ahead of "My Night
at Daria's" (#512). I guess my reasoning involves the building tension between
Daria & Jane, not to mention my personal extreme disappointment with Daria's
actions. In "MNAD", this was the one time I wanted to strangle Quinn for doing
that to her sister, jumping to conclusions, and the like. I thought it sort of
set Quinn back a bit from her growth in "IIFY?", more than anything else in
Season Five. Thanks.

>112- "The Teachings of Don Jake" To
try to help relieve stress, Helen takes Jake and the girls off camping. We hear
for the first time Jake rant about his father, I believe, giving us some new
insight to him at the time. Everyone attempts to tell stories around the
campfire with various outcomes. Jake's rant leaves everyone annoyed, Helen's is
a vampire tale that gets too close to an R rating and tones it down just as the
good parts arrive and Daria and Quinn are none too pleased. Quinn's story is
only scary to her and Daria's makes everyone sick. The next day after a berry
breakfast, everyone except Daria, who didn't eat hers, start hallucinating, they
had eaten psychotropic berries and started running over the woods like maniacs.
Luckily, thanks to Helen sneaking a cell phone along, Daria is able to get
everyone to 911 and have their stomachs pumped.

other people, eventually steal their Aunt's rental car and get the heck out of

>
>Very underrated episode by most, I'd say its among the top
3 of S1. The camping scenes were funny, and most of the scenes at the Lane famly
reunion were funny as well. Jake rants about his father for the first time we
know of, Helen shows she just can't entirely leave work, and Daria shows her
grace under fire, I'm not sure I could be that calm if my family was acting like
that out in the middle of nowhere. Nothing deep about this episode, just a good
solid ep.

shipper eps. Trent calls Daria to ask her something, flustering her, but when
Jane comes in the room he gets secretive and hangs up. He heads on over to
Daria's house and we go to..... commercial, big teasers. After getting the 3rd
degree from the parents, he asks to help pick out a birthday present for Jane.
While out and stil somewhat flustered, she goes against her normal judgement and
gets her navel pierced. With Trent's help and his hand, Daria makes through the
procedure alive and well.

the runway

her a song in that typical Trent wrote it, so it makes little sense style, we
all know and love. When she gets home she gets the 3rd degree from the parents
about the navel ring, after Quinn told them about it to try to make herself feel
better about the fashion show debacle. But of course by this time it's gone, and
Quinn is embarassed yet again.

The fashion show scenes, while funny, took away from the main plot, and weren't
related in the least except for Quinn finding out about both in the middle of
the 3rd act. Took time away from what many wanted to see, Trent/Daria. Still an
excellent ep.

>Daria
meanwhile stays at Jane's, where she and Tom's relationship is on the rocks at
this point, Jane isn't too trustful of OH because Tom seems overly friendly
around her lately. Brightening up whenever she enters the room, going directly
to Daria's room while at Jane's, instead of going to Jane, and losing track of
the time while discussing Lenin. This causes a rift between the partners in
crime, Daria forces the issue by waiting in Jane's room so they can talk, where
Jane thinks Daria may be trying to deliberately take Tom from her, which Daria
is doing none of, at this time, and Jane admits that jealousy has gotten to her,
Daria understands this and the two are back to being friends, for now. At the
end Trent is looking for Jane, runs into Daria and in so many words, tells her
not to be so oblivious to the fact of what's going on, Tom definitely likes her
and doesn't blame her for anything, but doesn't want her to deny something is
happening as well, and Daria is lost in thought about the whole situation on the
ride home, even missing a classic chance for one of her classic
barbs.
>

that anything is happening between her and Tom, even though Mr. Oblivious Trent

first real long term relationship going down the tubes, and suspecting her best
friend of causing it. Daria is torn, does she really like Tom, will Jane be OK
through all of this, what in the heck is happening to my life? She for once in
her life has no idea what to do, and I think it's scaring her. The scenes at the
hotel blended into the plot of this ep perfectly, no scenes were wasted,
everything in one way or another led back to the main plot, and plenty of funny
lines to break up the tension. A great
ep.

Tom and Daria enjoy a date reading together, but both fall asleep while doing
so, finally at around 4am they wake up and Tom attempts to sneak out, only to be
caught by Jake who is out of it from having too much sake' while trying to woo a
potential client, he unknowingly lets him out, mentions it as a side note to
Helen, who gives the 3rd degree to Daria almost immediately. Daria explains to
her what happened and Helen is ok with it, Quinn, however, hears only that Tom
spent the night in Daria's room, and immediately jumps to the conclusion of sex
and blabs it to Stacy, who immediately blabs it to everyone at school.
>
>Daria finds out about these after everyone at school tells her
what they thought happened, and goes straight to the source, Quinn. Once she
gets the idea that the next hot topic will push her news out of the spotlight,
she gets her revenge on Quinn, by telling Jane so that K+B can hear Quinn has a
terminal case of toe fungus, and the rumors start to fly about her, leaving
Daria'a sex life in the dust.
>
>The question does get placed in her
head however, does it really mean they're in a relationship if they haven't had
sex yet? Does it measure the entire worth of it? She discusses this with Tom,
and after many mild spats over various items decides that she is ready, and
after a few more spats, finally decide to go ahead the next Saturday, Jane's
happy for her, but Daria is much less than thrilled about the prospect. The big
night comes and Daria gets cold feet. Fearing the end because of this, she
leaves Tom a goodbye note, figuring the relationship was over. Tom tells her
this isn't the case at all, and was and still is comfortable with their
situation as it is now. And the bond gets even closer with
them.
>
>Jake, meanwhile, gets a parasite from a sushi restaurant he
was trying to get into business with. He was going to tell them off but then he
got the job. So he kept his mouth shut, not to ruin the deal, but after awhile
he has enough and tells the guy what he thinks of him and tells him goodbye.
This at least gets Jake talking to Daria again after he was freaked out by the
idea of his little girl having sex.
>
>Wow, that's all I have to say
about this one. The show finally handled the issue of sex and handled it about
as well as could possibly be done. Another side we rarely see from Daria, she
was scared to death of that much intimacy and it really freaked her out. After
coming close to the end for her and Tom yet again, she realizes this has made
her stronger and their relationship as well, she realizes how lucky she is to
have someone like Tom.

Favorite
Pierce Me - From the crush to parental concern, this was a
really great episode.
Runners-up
The Teachings of Don Jake -
Families bonding and not bonding, and a crisis averted by established
characterization.
Fire! - A lot of revelations in this ep, not the least
of which is that the Lanes can afford a big freaking house.
My Night At
Daria's - A ham-handed treatment of teenaged sex, but tragically fairly
accurate.
Just Add Water - Daria slept through most of this episode. So
did everyone else.

Would you believe that I haven't even voted yet? I'm going to have to correct
that oversight ASAP, but I can start with the 12's.
#112 - The Teachings
of Don Jake
Probably the best episode of S1, behind "The Misery Chick".
Jake's childhood angst... visual proof as to why the Lawndale Lanes should
*stay* the black sheep of the family ('cause the rest of 'em are insane!)...
and, most of all, GLITTER BERRIES!
#212 - Pierce Me
A good
episode, but I can't enjoy it as much as I probably should because the whole
'shipper thing seems... I don't know... forced, perhaps? Like they're shoving it
down our throats as if we can't pick up on the clues for ourselves. The phone
conversation was one of the show's classic scenes, though.
"Rrrrrrrrrredial!"
#312 - Just Add Water
"The Daria Hunter" and
"Fair Enough" meet "Titanic" over a year too late. I support the concept of
recycling, but not when it comes to scripts that were already mediocre to begin
with. Really, the only stinker of this bunch.
#412 - Fire!
Where
others see "Dawson's Creek," I see "real life" (or close enough to make no
difference). Well, okay, Jake's antics are right out of "The Simpsons," but
*besides* that. :-) You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't been through
(or known someone who's been through) a similar situation. At the very least, it
didn't play out like all of those myriad daytime and nighttime soap
operas...
#512 - My Night at Daria's
That Dreaded S-Word, handled
with far more grace and maturity than one would ever expect from MTV (but which
most of us come to expect from Glenn & Company). A pretty good message, too
-- don't force it, wait until the time is right -- provided that teens actually
pay attention to it...
My rankings? 512 by a hair, followed by 112 and
412 (tie), 212, and, stinking up the basement,
312.

I'd probably have to go with 112. Gotta love glitter berries. 212 a close
second, i just didn't like the subplot of the fashion show, it was ok the first
time, but hard to sit through again. She's so smushy! I guess 412 next, i don't
really remember it but i remember hating it a lot less than the rest of the
season. I didn't like 312 or 512. 312 being crap. 512 was so predictable and
cliche i wanted to puke. Seemed like just another mandatory sex episode that
teeny boppers giggle at. It just wasn't very strong and i get really sick of
Daria and her little decisions, it reminded me a lot of Through A Lens Darkly.

This was harder than I thought. I was very tempted to vote for 412 in spite
of my objections to the melodrama because I liked the tension that developed
between Daria and Jane -- too bad it had an external cause rather than coming
from the tensions that were already there in their friendship. Instead, I'll go
with:
1) 112: Not amongst my favorite episodes, but funny and revealing.
Jane's extended family scenes were great, especially the last one in the
kitchen. "Janey, it's seven-thirty in the morning, and we're awake." "Soon the
wooden balls will be klack-klack-klacking."
2) 512: I felt like I'd seen
it before, but I give Daria credit in this one for deciding *not* to do what all
the other teenagers were supposedly doing.
3) 412: That's what sank this
one for me -- in this, Daria *did* do what all the other teenagers supposedly
did, which was get caught up in a love triangle. In my high school experience,
there were no love triangles; friendship triangles were more the norm.
4)
212: I loved the first act, but the rest of the ep was so-so. It was fun seeing
Quinn get maniacally competitive, and it signaled the first appearance by
Monique. In spite of how villainized she's become, she is a fun character and I
wish we saw more of her beyond "Lane Miz."
5) 313: Distant. God this was
bad, right down there with "Murder She Snored" as Peggy's worst episodes and one
of the worst of the series. No part of it was funny or revealing, unlike "The
Daria Hunter" and "Fair Enough."

>112- "The Teachings of Don Jake" To try to help relieve stress, Helen
takes Jake and the girls off camping.
This is the "Drugs" episode in the
Daria Episode Big Topic List -- see also "God", "Sex" and "Integrity". And they
got as close to dealing with people being wigged out on substances as the show
should go, I wager (unless, of course, Quinn is going on a 28-day vacation). And
that's what this episode is all about, really, seeing the results of the
Glitter Berry poisoning, and that's enough. Big fun, and I'll say that it's in
the top three of season one, but not the apex.
But let's not miss this
line, as it is more foreshadowing of the "Quinn the Drunk" storyline we expect
in IICY:
Quinn - What's Dad so worked about anyway?
Helen - Oh,
Quinn. It's not easy being an adult.
Quinn - He can drive, he never has to
take a pop quiz, he can order a mamosa anytime he wants. What's the problem?
Special to Helen: Denial is not just a river in
Egypt.
>212- "Pierce Me" The shipper ep to end all shipper
eps.
Jane - (teasing) Oh, dear, our little girl's becoming a woman.
Daria - Shut up.
Jane - Don't you get it, Daria? You did something
stupid for a guy. Gee, you may join the human race after all.
And, like
Groucho Marx, Daria would rather not join any club that would have her as a
member. But she does dig that attention Trent absentmindedly bestows upon her.
Or...is it absentminded? He did want to see her in that little black-and-white
checked number, hanging in the window...just like a man, out shopping for
presents for himself.
Now that we've got the 'shippers all hot and
bothered...this episode works well because it takes apart the assumed-Daria --
the ice princess, Spock in combat boots -- and shows up her human failings. And
it does a fine job of that.
>312- "Just Add Water" The whole school
goes on a mandatory Casino Night fundraiser aboard a cruise ship.
Imagine
if one only saw "Just Add Water,"Murder, She Snored" and "The 'F' Word." One
would say, "Daria sucks."
>412- "Fire!" While unable to sleep,
Jake gets up for some warm milk, only to leave paper towels near the stove and
set them and the kitchen on fire, forcing everyone to live in a hotel for the
next 2 weeks.
Hey, all you computer geeks.... Quinn's crazy, she should
have gone for the hAx0r -- get free stuff that way, and he'll never want to
touch you because he's got to rush home to learn how to steal credit card
numbers and download Windows XP activation numbers on Kazaa.
Well,
Daria's not bad, she's just written that way. To carry the Spock ref from 312
further, she's entering her own Ponn Far, when not only would she beat up her
best friend (figuratively), but answer certain urges.... I'll be honest -- I
REALLY got into Daria, as a series, with the F!, D,D,MD, IIFY trilogy.
My
name is Um, and I'm a Daria/Tom shipper. Well, I was, until about 504 or
so....
Is the ep good? Not the best of the three, but it all comes
together and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That said, it's
eminently watchable.
>512- "My Night at Daria's" Tom and Daria
enjoy a date reading together, but both fall asleep while doing so,
This
is the "Sex" episode in the Daria Episode Big Topic List -- see also "God",
"Drugs" and "Cheese Fries". I've actually been where these two were, waking up
very, very late for home and in some girl's room. Owie. The idea of OH getting a
rep as a sex kitten is a very nice touch, in fact, a nicer one than Tom got.
Never announce the condom, dude....
You all knew Daria wasn't
coming across, right? But Tom must dig psycho moves in his women, because Daria
pulls several in this one. And if that sounds unkind, well, sorry, but in my
humble opinion, Season Five Daria needs to go in for regrooving.
>My
favorite: No real doubt about it here, all are very good episodes except one,
but I have to go with 512-"My Night At Daria's" for their excellent handling of
the sex issue we've waited 5 seasons for.

312-"Just Add Water".
Ouch...tough choice between 112, 212 and 412. It
won't be My Night at Daria's, as I'm on strike against all Daria/Tom
relationship eps. I know it's a little late to declare this, but what the hey.
To answer the "Which one would I choose first to watch?" question, it'll be
"Pierce Me." Followed by 412, 112, 512 and 312 might as well not exist.

driving me crazy, trying to figure out the correct spelling of the orange juice
with champagne drink. I pronounce it "muh-mosa" and thought it was spelled
m-i-m-o-s-a. But I haven't found the definition for that drink in the
dictionary, and here it's spelled with an L. On the other hand, I've noticed
Rowena has mispelled a few exotic words in her transcripts, such as "nouveau
riche," so perhaps this isn't right, either. Does anyone
know?

The title says it all. I've seen all five of the 12's --
"The Teachings of Don Jake", "Pierce Me", "Just Add Water", "Fire!" and "My
Night at Daria's". And here's my take on all five, a little late, I'm afraid
--
"The Teachings of Don Jake" had several good points to it. First, as
Mike Quinn once said, the A and B plots were very well connected. Second, we get
to hear from Jake some of the trauma he faced when he was younger -- a
controlling father and a horrible corporal. Third, there's the glitter berries,
which proceed to drive all but Daria temporarily crazy (thanks to the simple
fact that Daria never ate the berries).
I liked "Pierce Me" well enough,
since it showed that Daria was vulnerable to doing stupid things for a guy she
really appreciates -- i.e., she's human, after all. And I'm like Daria in the
reason why I never had any piercings -- I'm not fond of the pain that comes from
piercing. Still, it's not my favorite episode.
"Just Add Water" is the
worst of the 12's, without a doubt. It's a filler episode, which isn't terrible
but isn't great either. Worse, the premise is just simply uninteresting for me.
Perhaps it's saving grace for me is the fact that it has a couple of parodies of
Titanic in there. One of the worst Daria episodes that I've ever watched, in
short.
I liked "Fire!" It was the real beginning of the "love triangle",
and therefore put Daria & Jane in a position like almost none they've ever
experienced before. I think Daria was trying to deny that she was attracted to
Tom throughout the episode, and I can understand why. First of all, he's Jane's
boyfriend, and Jane's her best friend. Second, Daria's never had a boyfriend (I
don't think either Ted or Trent count), and she's very picky when it comes to
close relationships. However, Trent's right in saying that she has to face
what's going on around her and within herself as well. As for Jane, her
jealousy's understandable as well, but very unfortunate. All around, the
episode's pretty dramatic and sets the scene for further trouble, which we see
in "Dye! Dye! My Darling". The only weak part is possibly the scenes with Quinn
and her "stalker" bellboy friend, Bobby.
Finally, there's "My Night at
Daria's". This is definitely one of the best "Daria and Tom relationship"
episodes out there, imho. First, we see the problems that can occur with rumors
and gossip. Quinn thinks Daria and Tom slept together, and spreads the story
around, and of course rumors get wilder as they're told. Second, we see Daria
grappling with the problem of intimacy, something that is part of the reason why
she oftentimes pushes people away from her. Third, we see a realistic portrayal
of how an intelligent girl can pressure herself to try something she's really
not ready to handle. Fourth, we see that you can have intimacy without
necessarily having sex. And fifth, we even get to hear a little bit about
whether other characters have had sex or not. Unsurprisingly, Kevin &
Brittany have had sex, and it appears that Jodie & Mack have had sex as
well, while Jane never slept with Tom (and most likely, not with anybody
else).
My pick is "My Night at Daria's", with "Fire!" some distance
behind. Right behind it is "The Teachings of Don Jake". Then comes "Pierce Me",
and "Just Add Water" trails the field by a good distance.

#1 112--One of the best all-around Daria eps ever. What other show could do a
Casteneda ref and make it work? Great just for backstory on
Jane/Trent/Helen/Jake alone. I still chuckle when I hear the lines, "I love
camping, I LOVE IT! ... Has anybody seen my pants?"
#2 212--Just to watch
the shippers squirm. ;-) Hey, it's late. Or early. Whatever. During the first
showing, I bet certain folks almost fell on the floor just during the first act.
Great tension and comedic pacing.
#3 412--See #212. ;-) Seriously, tho, I
like this one *because* Daria is "human" enough to do something boneheaded like
get involved in a love triangle. (Yeah, Kara, it's contrived, but isn't
everything when you get right down to it? ;-) It isn't one of my all-times, but
it's better than the two that follow.
#4 512--A good ep, but predictable
of the later-eps Daria. Too predictable for my taste.
#5 312--Ugh. What
*were* they thinking? Fair Enough and TDH were MUCH better ensemble
eps.
Because I don't have time, my 13s:
#1 213--The best ep ever,
IMNSHO. Nuff Sed.
#2 113--The second-best ep ever, IMNSHO, otherwise it'd've
been #1.
#3 513--Great closer ep for season 5.
#4 313--Very strong ep.
#5 413--Good ep, but enters the land of soap opera too much for my tastes--
cliffhangers are evil, and evil should be punished. ;-)

Daria: Some are weird. Some are just astonishingly
self-centered and deceitful.

>#3 412--See #2. ;-) Seriously, tho, I like this one *because* Daria is
"human" enough to do something boneheaded like get involved in a love triangle.
(Yeah, Kara, it's contrived, but isn't everything when you get right down to it?
;-)
True. But some contrivances are good and original (life from the POV
of a cynical teenage girl? what a concept!), while others make you go: "Gee, I
know I've seen this before... on 90210."

Tough decision, because four of these episodes are really, really good. And
three of them are definitely shipper eps -- is this the highest concentration
thereof in any grouping?
First of all, "Just Add Water" is right out. Not
bad, exactly, but the whole "forced to go on a school activity" bit isn't very
original.
"Fire!" is good, but it's the real beginning of the whole love
triangle crappola, and for that reason it doesn't get a vote. Quinn behaves like
a royal witch, and Tom really, really should know better than to hang out with
Daria when he comes over to Jane's house. The net result is a crappy, crappy
week for Daria, none of which is her fault. Poor her.
"The Teachings of
Don Jake" is classic S-1 _Daria_, with sarcasm in abundance, Trent and Jake at
their most amusing, Q uinn at her shallow best, Helen's hypocrisy saving the
day, and Daria and Jane doing what they can to survive their families. And who
can forget those glitterberries and spirit animals.
"Pierce Me" is about
Jane's birthday, but mostly it's about Daria's crush on Trent. It's good anyway,
mostly because it leaves the crush as just that, nothing more. Daria tries to
read meaning into phonecalls from Trent and into the fact that he talks her into
getting pierced, but he obviously doesn't feel the same about her, and even she
knows it. It's also a very densely packed episode: Jane's birthday, Daria's
naval ring, Quinn's mother-daughter fashion show. But this works, too, without
cutting anything short.
"My Night at Daria's" answers a lot of questions
we've been wondering about for 5 seasons (namely, who's had sex and who hasn't).
The worst part is the Lawndale High rumor mill -- if it's always like that, how
does Brittany survive? Or is Daria just special? The best part is that Daria and
Tom don't do it, because it's pretty obvious from the start that Daria isn't
ready. And it's very sweet that they stay together and find "a new level of
intimacy" anyway. Almost too sweet.
So... I say it's a tie between
"Pierce Me" and "The Teachings of Don Jake."

whatever-i-am in the room"

#12: The Teachings of Don Jake, Pierce Me, Just Add Water, Fire!, My
Night at Daria’s
WINNER: #112, The Teachings of Don Jake (Honorable
Mention to My Night at Daria’s)
Two words: Glitter Berries. The whole
concept of the camping trip is riotous, from their various problems to the
solution to them all. And the B-plot, with the Lane family reunion, is likewise
hilarious.
Loser: #312, Just Add Water
It wasn’t that bad, but
it wasn’t that great either. Another rather contrived
plot.
