Sorry for the delay, just being careful with a possible board nuke. I may post the 12's on schedule, allowing only 2 instead of the usual 3 days inbetween groups. That, or I'll cut down the time allowed for the special runoff vote. You'll all know within a couple of days. Now, on with the show......
111- "Road Worrier" You know this one, the classic shipper ep, spawner of many crappy fanfics to this day. Daria joins Jane, Trent, and Jesse on a road trip to Alternapalooza, where all sorts of embarassing things happen to her, all in front of Trent. Bumps her head getting in the van, gets stung by a bee, sits on an old sandwich, has to wiz in the woods, etc. Always expecting the worst, even though Jane mentions her brother is oblivious. When the tank breaks down, she and Trent are left by the van as Jane and Jesse search for help behind a noise wall, and come back after finding nothing but corn, interrupting a heart to heart between Daria and Trent, where she convinces him not to give up on his dreams, and he gets to understand her better. Jane's glue gun eventually gets the van going again, just as the concert is over. Leaving Daria with a long ride home, but after having gained a better understanding of Trent.
Other developments include Quinn and the FC, along with Kevin, Brittany, Jodie, Mack, and the 3 J's also going to the concert. At least trying to, as they get sidetracked by outlet shopping and Brittany also grabs the wheel and follows them, so none of our cast actually makes it to the concert. Lastly Helen and Jake spend some, ahem, "quality" time together, if you get my drift.
Good episode all around. The first time we see Daria, actually with a weak point. We know she has a crush on Trent, this is the first time we see it in full effect. Even going as far as encouraging him with his career, which at that time, looked as if it were going nowhere. The FC's adventures in shopping and actually traveling to the concert were LOL funny. Especially Stacy's "Stretch pants" freakout. Helen and Jake show at times they can get along real well. Tons of good lines in this one, a few forthcoming.
Lines:
Helen: Your father went to one on the most famous festivals of the decade.
Quinn: Woodstock?
Jake: Altamont. Terrible tragedy, but I demanded my money back and I got it.
Daria: Wasn't Altamont free?
Jake: That's the same line they tried to use on me.
Jane: We'd like that, wouldn't we Daria?
Daria: Pass me a guitar string so that I may silence my friend.
Trent: Maybe if we spelled Mystic with 2 y's?
Daria: And I'll spell my name D-a-r-y-a, and be crowned Miss America.
Stacy: These are stretch pants! I'm wearing stretch pants!
Sandi: They're leggings! They're leggings, it's alright.
Daria: I knew I should've taken ballet. Stop staring at me you squirrel pervert!
211- "See Jane Run" To get back at Ms. Morris Jane joins the track team, surprising Daria. Also Jane meets and likes a boy named Evan already on the team. Jane turns out to be very good winning her races fairly easily, Daria turns out to cheer her on half-heartedly, as she sees this as Jane selling out to the system. This puts a strain of their friendship. They get more tense around each other, and the slightest things set them off. While Jane is away, Daria talks to herself to fill the void left by Jane. Worried, Helen enlists Quinn to spend some me with Daria, only agreeing after she gets Helen's gold card. This doesn't help as Quinn ditches Daria first chance she gets. When Jane gets a bye on an exam, Daria now sees this as more evidence of selling out, and stalks off from Jane again. After the "losers" comment from Evan, Jane realizes what this has been doing to her and Daria and quits the team soon after.
Another good episode. Daria talking to herself to fill the void of Jane's absence was a bit strange, as I'd imagine she never did that before meeting Jane, but I could understand it. One interesting note, this seems to start a trend. When Daria tries something new, Jane seems to accept it with open arms, i.e. joining yearbook in "The New Kid". When Jane starts something, Daria sees it as Someone/something taking Jane away from her, and thus opposes anything Jane tries. Kind of selfish of her, treating Jane as something she alone should be allowed to be with and enjoy, even if that means Jane's not happy. It's all about Daria here and again, this seems very selfish of her. Brittany's running gag about the splits was funny, but the above scenario, takes away from this episode to me. Still the best Jane episode out there.
Lines:
Daria: Land that big sneaker endorsement yet?
Jane: Nah, they wouldn't meet my price.
Trent: It takes alot of guts, all that practicing, day in, day out, and for what? So a bunch of drunks can make your art the backdrop to their pathetic mating dance? They don't care about your dream, they just want something loud going on so they don't have to talk.
Daria: Were not talking about Jane anymore, are we?
311- "The Lawndale File" Strange occurences and coincedences lead Daria and Jane and most of the town that either aliens or communists are coming to take over Lawndale. Helen and Jake's attempts at conversation regarding aliens, meaning immigrants, Quinn all of a sudden changing her wardrobe to cover up her neck after an offhand comment from Jane, O'neill's comments about sci-fi movies are misconstrued by everyone, leading many to think that our heroines are "Atomic Communists from Mars" it doesn't help that Mr DeMartino is lead away in handcuffs for no apparent reason, and lastly, Trent appears to be playing "happy" music, far from his norm.
Turns out Quinn's wardrobe change was the result of a neck zit, Mr. DeMartinos disappearance was caused by agents who mistakenly thought he was an illegal immigrant, O'neill restated his comments telling what he really meant, and Trent was writing a jingle for a used car ad on tv.
A surprisingly good episode, shows how a simple miscommunication can lead to very odd problems and things spiraling way out of control. Everything seemed to work out here, all the situations out of the ordinary, Mr. DeMartino, Trent and his "hell" music, the reaction to Quinn after Tiffany and Stacy accidentally reveal the private problem one of them has, even Artie's appearance was funny here, a surprisingly good episode.
Lines:
O'Neill: You're a communist, You're an alien.
Daria: Trade you Cuba for Jupiter.
Jane: When's the last time you saw Kevin with out his neck thingy?
Daria: You mean implants?
Brittany: I heard that! And it's not true!
Jane: Guess she thinks you meant her UFO's.
Jane: What's the going rate for an artists soul?
Trent: $20, An hour of free studio time and a set of tires.
Jane: That's it?
Trent: Hey, they're new tires.
411- "Groped By an Angel" Quinn starts believing in guardian angels after a near accident with her and a chandelier set up by Jake. She starts believing everything that happens to her is the result of her angel. Not eating bad salad dressing at lunch, not having to give an answer when she didn't know it, getting new jeans after the old ones were ruined, etc. Soon however she begins to doubt her angel after a string of bad luck, splashing soda on her new jeans, leaning on the mixing board, causing Brittany's gift to break. Eventually she runs off crying. Daria, who believes none of the talk of angels, comforts Quinn at her darkest, even forsaking her own beliefs to make her sister feel better. Telling her to believe in whatever makes her feel happy.
Good episode, not great. Daria shows she is growing closer to her sister, even though she'll never admit it to anyone, which shows some growth. But Brittany's party scenes seemed a waste of screen time, as nothing funny came of it except Trent and Max's sub-zero discussion. Time that could've been used to further explore Quinn and her beliefs and motivations behind them. A wasted episode considering what comes up in the very next episode. Few if any good memorable lines.
Lines:
Jane: Guardian angels, huh?
Daria: Hey, at least the Trix rabbit doesn't leave the milk out when he comes to visit. (or something along those lines)
Trent and Max's sub-zero arguments.
511- "Prize Fighters" Daria applies for a college scholarship from the Wizard foundation, along with Upchuck, and Jodie she is elected as a finalist for the award. After learning of Wizard's questionable business practices from Tom, she feels torn about applying, yet does so, and actually goes out of the way and sees a coach to help her chances, even though it is totally against her principles. Eventually she just decides to be herself, which is tantamount to her not wanting the prize, which none of the 3 win. Jane feels left out of this as she isn't as smart as the rest, and accuses Daria of selling out while she's trying to win the prize, which to an extent she was.
A short summary for an episode that was short on alot of things. Plot. execution of said lack of plot, ugh. This episode was blah and not really worth the time.
Since I usually do this and I couldn't find any, the best line from this ep:
Jodie: She's starting to sound like you.
Daria: Does that mean I'm starting to sound like you?
Brittany: Hi!
Daria: If any of us starts to sound like her, it's time to panic.
My favorite: An extremely close call between 111, 211, and 311, as all are high quality episodes. After a great deal of thought, I actually have to give it to 311-"The Lawndale File". 111 gives us some deep insight for the first time into Daria's crush, and has many funny moments throughout, but 311 is just plain funny, there are no blah moments in this one here, everything seems to work and is tied up neatly. 211- is a good epsode, but Daria's pettiness and childishness over keeping her friendship with Jane and not allowing anyone else is a downturn for her character, and brings down what was an excellent episode. 311 is my winner, though to be honest I changed my mind several times while typing this out before finally settling on 311.
Followed by: Very close 2nd, is 111- "The Road Worrier", then 211- "See Jane Run", next 411- "Groped By An Angel", and lastly, 511- "Prize Fighters".
Catch you all later,

This is another tough one... (i'm tired, so comments only for eps that I can think of them for) - in order from most to least liked...
211 - See Jane Run
111 - Road Worrier: Anne Bernstein wrote an episode that launched a thousand 'shippers. Gotta give it props for that and just being plain funny to boot.
311 - Lawndale File
511 - Prize Fighters:
411 - Groped by an Angel: A story which was sort of shoehorned into being a "Daria" episode... i.e. direct references to religion had to be taken out etc.

And for this round:
>111- "Road Worrier"
Funny, solid plotting, and the 'shippers would take any excuse anyway.
>211- "See Jane Run"
Nice Jane episode. May be one of the early examples that whole bitch-Daria tangent that apparently marred S5 but that's hardly Ms Romberg's fault.
>311- "The Lawndale File"
Best weird-s__t episode besides The Episode That Shall Not Be Named By People Without A Sense Of Humour (kidding, kidding). Funny as hell. Can anyone else see Kevin in politics? And the resolution... see sig.
>411- "Groped By an Angel"
Its sole redeeming feature was that it affirmed the possibility of there being more than one or two dimensions to that Quinn character. Otherwise, a complete waste. Some shots at organised religion... well, they did go astray, didn't they? Plus there was Daria and Quinn's little after-school-special moment near the end. Especially considering what would happen if you took Daria's advice to its logical conclusion... I'm not sure if that's damn subtle humour on the part of the writers, or just stupidity. Probably the latter.
>511- "Prize Fighters"
Martin, SUSU, how much do I need to pay you guys to finish the transcripts?

Heh, okay...
Short answer:
Because I liked them. Okay, that's pretty bloody obvious.
Slightly longer answers:
In the '07s, it was a process of elimination. I haven't seen/read Art Burn. Then we have Of Human Bonding which was, well, Of Human Bonding, and I can't say any more outside the SRMB. We have Daria! (which I *really* didn't like, not on the Aargh! It's weird! principle but because I didn't think it was very good, Jake scenes/songs excepted) and The New Kid (prolly my second choice, but... blah. Not a bad idea, but Ted was a little too cliched for my tastes. That and the whole one-22-minute-ep-is-not-enough thing.) That leaves TLB, a solid S1 episode. Plus, BRIAN TAYLOR. Enough said, really. ;o) 107, 207, 307, 407.
In the '08s, same problem for the S5 episode. LM never really grabbed me. Psycho Therapy is undoubtedly a very strong episode, but its timing in the S4 vacuum meant it got a bit overrated. Pinch Sitter is possibly the ultimate S1 episode with Daria's forays into the ever-growing field of mind control deprogramming, but I actually prefer Gifted's greater ambitions (plus that it was in the middle of the overall far-better-quality S2 meant it got *under*rated). And its intellectual jerk-offs. And the bridal fair subplot --- utterly pointless, but they knew how much humour they could squeeze out of it and didn't try for a drop more. That, and some *brilliant* lines. 208, 108/408 tie, 308.

Okay, here's my votes:
(1) #111 - "Road Worrier" - The first truly "classic" 'shipper ep with Daria and Trent. I chose this one first only because it seemed to affect the most authors in this genre. I'm officially a "Fence Sitter", but I do respect both sides. Hm--I wonder what the official anti-shipper ep was? ("Lane Miserables" perhaps?)
(2) #211 - "See Jane Run" - A VERY close second. Perhaps the first time we see the "childish-acting" Daria so prevalant in Season Five.
(3) #311 - "The Lawndale File" - The show's take on alien/communist paranoia, with a touch of "X-Files" thrown in (with apologies to Mr. Takis). Funny throughout, though there seemed to be some forced attempts at humor, such as the scene with Mack, Jodie, Kevin, Brittany, Upchuck, and O'Neill in the park(?).
(4) #411 - "Groped By An Angel" - Perhaps the first real attempt at addressing religion on the show, or at least as close to it as the show came to doing it. We had a *tinnny* bit of insight into Quinn's psyche...
(5) #511 - "Prize Fighters" - Enough said, which is nothing good. Thanks.

My official position is that 'Daria' should've stayed on at least one more season, with Season Five perhaps concentrating on bringing up more of the background characters more, such as Mack's family (or a Mack-centric fic), Tom's family ("IIFY?" did NOT really do them justice), or an ep around Helen's mother (since Jake's was done in "JOH").
In my speculative Season Six, the entire season would've been devoted to tying up loose ends, so to speak, with "Boxing Daria" being perhaps the next-to last ep. "IICY?" then could've been spread out over the last threes eps.
I just wished Eichler could've constructively used what resources he had to even better use. Remember, I thought there *were* possibilites, good ones. Still, I guess we should be very grateful that we had *two* made-for TV movies...thanks.

I agree 100% with that, and furthermore, I would've liked to see how things were at the Rowe/Blum-Deckler houses, as well as more on the relationship between Tom & Linda Griffin. Maybe Quinn could be at all those houses and stumble upon their dirty laundry.

Although it's doubtful, I imagine Upchuck taking Stacy to the prom and later trying to get her alone, and we see in silouhette just how "feisty" she can be. And no, Kem it's not a rip-off of Cyber Stacy. In fact it's a lot closer to the opposite.

Only if you think that S1 was the high point of the entire series, a notion with which I strongly disagree. I also suspect that more than a few S1ers look at S1 through rose-colored glasses, which tends to cloud one's objectivity, but that's only a theory. :-)

Actually, as the most vocal S1er around these days, I'd say S2 was better overall. Even Daniel Suni's reviews only showed half a point's difference. The term "S1er" is misleading, as IMAO it really just implies that you prefer the satirical episodes to the romantic (and we saw good examples of the former as late as Psycho Therapy) and/or that you think after about WWIH the quality of the show went down, and really plummeted come S4 and 5.
That said (tangent begins) I do think that the show should have ended around S3. My dream run of the show runs the first season intact, S2 with Fair Enough ditched for a two-part version of WWIH (and better long-term handling of Daria's relationship with Helen all round), and trades a few of the weaker S3 episodes and all mentions of Tom (for simplicity's sake, I've nothing against the character) for Psycho Therapy, Lucky Strike and Boxing Daria. End tangent.

>111- "Road Worrier"
A good one. We get to see Daria wear something other than her usual outfit. We see her make a real connection with Trent (maybe not the connection some hope for, but, still, something.) And the ultimate resolution of the Alternapalooza plot is a wonder to behold.
>211- "See Jane Run"
Another good one. Just because Jane and Daria are friends doesn't mean they won't fight over something...even if that something is overtly Jane's sleazy involvement in the track team, but under all that is the issue of "guys."
>311- "The Lawndale File"
I liked it. Artie's appearance was a blast. And the surprise on the faces of Daria and Jane at the school rally was a sight to behold.
Then there were the lines from Tiffany: "But if that girl were an Atomic Communist, wouldn't she have a more interesting outfit?"
Followed immediately by Stacy's "You're scaring me, Tiffany!"
>411- "Groped By an Angel"
Somewhat lesser than the others, but still a lot of fun. After all, Mystik Spiral do debut a new song here. And the scene after the party, between Daria and Quinn...well, I think we might be seeing another emergence of smart Quinn and caring Daria here...
>511- "Prize Fighters"
Again, somewhat lesser. I would've thought there'd've been more on Daria's conflict on trying to do the scholarly equivalent of "dressing for success," but instead, the episode went off on a tangent about how sleazy the scholarship actually was. But Daria, Jodie, and Upchuck each taking a different tack while fighting it out for the scholarship was great...
But I think it does lay some groundwork for "Is It College Yet?"
As for my votes, well,
211 "See Jane Run"
111 "The Road Worrier"
311 "The Lawndale File"
411 "Groped by an Angel"
511 "Prize Fighters"

>111- "Road Worrier"
Glad to know Daria has the same opinion of squirrels as I do. I'm a quasi-anti-shipper--wouldn't want to see Daria and Trent actually get together--but watching the shipperesque for what they really are, a young girl with a crush, is highly amusing.
>211- "See Jane Run"
Another Laura-Daria connection. If I'm alone, I'm likely as not talking to myself.
>311- "The Lawndale File"
This is an episode that, based on a synopsis, would seem like it wouldn't work. Luckily, we are in for a pleasant surprise.
>411- "Groped By an Angel
I thought this was a good topic, but I've seen spirituality handled better, and not just on Seventh Heaven.
>511- "Prize Fighters"
I found this episode decent, but not nearly as interesting as the other contenders.
And my votes:
#111
#311
#211
#411
#511

Daria in jeans. Daria with shirt tucked in, with shirt pulled out. Daria with a hint of lipstick. Daria with a a bee-sting and a peanut butter sandwich on her ass. Daria and Trent...this episode is the Rosetta Stone of an international WWW phenomenon and at least a handful of young women's fantasy lives (though discretion forbids naming names). Always worth watching.

>211- "See Jane Run"
It's all about integrity, man...and co-dependence? That girl needs a boyfriend. (Anyone's will do.)
Boy, I hated gym class, and the coaches were pretty much like that. Daria must have at least attemped to participate, if only to avoid screwing up her GPA...but maybe she wrote papers, like I did.
Here we see the introduction of "Bitchy Daria," which certainly reared its head in in the latter quarter of season four and was season five, pretty much. Makes S1-ers froth at the mouth. But I don't have that problem, and A.J. accurately calls this as the best Janecentric ep.

Fantasy can be fun...and an example of the show's fascination with paranoia, aliens and communism. [Glenn Eichler==Child of the Cold War.] I guess that, if one is a huge "X-Files" fan (/me waves at sam), then this episode is a contender. But I'm not. Still, very watchable.
>
>411- "Groped By an Angel"
Okay, fine, whatever. One of those episodes where you really get tired of Quinn. No wonder Daria beat on her at the end of "The New Kid." But I guess there's been "growth" in the intervening two seasons, as Daria is convinced at the end of this to let Quinn wallow in the opiated haze of delusion over heavenly intercession.
Maybe OH did so not out of kindness toward Quinn, but because she was as bored with this episode's premise as I was.
I guess this is an acceptable stab at contemplating life, the universe and everything, including belief and God. Another I'd watch, but not go out of my way to find.
>511- "Prize Fighters" Daria applies for a college scholarship from the Wizard foundation, along with Upchuck, and Jodie she is elected as a finalist for the award.
I think we all agreed that this one sucked. What could have saved it? A better gag than Jake's hot dogs. More incisive parody of corporate America and corpo-think than we got. A better kicker than Daria discovering that corporate types dismiss her venom as just cute satire. A better interpersonal problem than Jane feeling inadequate about her grades.
This was another attempt to get the characters to do stuff they don't do, and not for good enough reasons. Feh.
Who wins?
111 - The Road Worrier. One of the best of S1, and by this point, that "S1 groove" had been perfected. You don't have to be a Daria/Trent 'shipper to approve, either...there's a lot to sink one's teeth into, here. I mean, who hasn't had an unrequited crush?
Followed by:
211 - See Jane Run. Got to give everyone's favorite raven-haired artist her place in the sun. Also gets character-point points for the "Bitchy Daria" transformation. Our little girl's growing up...bratty.
311 - The Lawndale File. Can't compete with the other two, sorry.
411 - Groped by an Angel. Wake me up when it's over.
511 - Prize Fighters. Wake me up when Daria's on.

Thanks again, A.J...
>111- "Road Worrier"
I can forgive this one for spawning 'shipperdom, because it's just such a good, funny episode. I was losing interest in "Daria" after episodes like "Malled" and "This Year's Model," but this episode brought me back. It shows Daria vulnerable (for the first time!) and makes a lot of good jabs at culture. I especially laughed at the "stretch pants" line and the attempts by the popular mainstream crowd to be alternative (ex: the F.C., playing bubblegum band music, roll up the convertible top at the first whiff of fertilizer). And then there's Brittany's "A clothes hanger! Outlet shopping!"
And the Daria/Trent moment, while "You Showed Me" played in the background, produced an "Awwwwww!" from me. I was innocent then. I had no idea it would create such a following.
>211- "See Jane Run"
One of my favorites of Season Two. The first Jane-centric episode, where Jane tries out for something mainstream, and she and Daria show they have differing opinions. The resolution here, for 2/3 of the episode, is less obvious than in the similar episode "Art Burn." Jane excels at a school sport, one which is based on one of her favorite activities, which doesn't seem to harm her other passion. So Daria's whining seems like just that: whining. Until Jane accepts the "bye" (buy? by?) on her math test, revealing the corruption within the sports system. As others have said, I think this shows the level to which Daria is selfish about her friendship, while Jane, under similar circumstances, is selfless.
Some of the best lines came from the gym class scene. I wish they'd have brought Ms. Morris back for another episode.
MORRIS: What's your excuse?
DARIA: I'm just plain no good?
MORRIS: Life's just one big smartass joke, isn't it?
>311- "The Lawndale File"
I was afraid of this episode after the other two fantasy eps, but it was surprisingly funny, if a bit strained at times. I still can't believe, though, that Daria misunderstood what Helen said about the "aliens," while Jake understood it. You'd think one of them would realize that Daria was thinking of the extraterrestrial kind. And how exactly did Jake make the connection between Daria taking a walk and Communism? And, given his background, why would he think leftist Daria was a bad thing?
>411- "Groped By an Angel"
This is one of the episodes where I wish some of Season One's humor were evident. Season One "Daria" would have had a field day with a religion episode. As it was, the episode felt dumbed down, like something that would have appeared in "Full House." Many people, including myself, were displeased by Daria's line: "I think you should believe whatever makes you feel best." Too morally relativistic for Daria.
>511- "Prize Fighters"
I didn't dislike this episode as much as some people, but it *did* fail to address many important issues, like Daria's family's financial status or a lot of the college application experience.
My faves:
A near tie between "Road Worrier" and "See Jane Run," with RW getting the edge. Then:
3) The Lawndale File
4) Groped By An Angel
5) Prize Fighters

111: "Road Worrier"
Fun. There're better shipper eps, but I suppose this gets credit
for being the first. Couple questions:
How can Sandi drive? She's in Quinn's grade, which makes her fifteen. Was she left back? Is Lawndale in a state with a young
driving age? Or does Sandi just ignore the law.
Does Jane have designs on Jesse at this point? We know she doesn't
later, but she goes to an awful lot of trouble to get Trent with Daria, unless she has an ulterior motive.
Why wasn't Helen *with* Jake at Altamont? (Okay, maybe this isn't
such a big deal, but *I'm* curious.)
211: "See Jane Run"
I suspect I'm in the minority here when I say that I don't like
"See Jane Run" at all. For an episode that claims to be the
definitive Jane episode, we see very little of what makes Jane
tick. This is maybe because the ep, like "Fizz Ed" later on, is
muddled with way too many subplots. There're three Jane plots
alone--Jane v. Daria, Jane v. Evan, and Jane v. Mrs. Morris--so
the Daria/Quinn interaction is unnecessary.
As for the Jane subplots, they all feel badly resolved. It's as
if the writer spent the whole episode working this stuff up and
then realized there were only two minutes left in the episode, so
Jane just tells everyone off and returns to status quo ante. Maybe
if Jane had stayed on the track team, merely resolving her problems
with Daria and telling off Evan this episode would have worked for
me. The "corruption of athletics" subplot could have been worked
out over a couple of episodes with Jane slowly realizing she's
being subverted and taking time to turn the tables on The Morris.
Oh well.
311: "The Lawndale File"
It's fun, but it's stupid. For the plot of this episode to work,
the IQs of many Lawndalians have to drop an additional ten or
fifteen points, which just doesn't work in most cases (and would
not, in fact, leave Kevin breathing).
It does however get points for what is perhaps the quintessential
Sandi victory over Quinn (though "Fair Enough" may be a little
more thorough). Quinn's humiliating neck zit is revealed to the
whole school while Sandi's hands remain clean (and who thinks she
didn't know that Stacy and Tiffany could be depended on to blab
Quinn's secret by accident).
411: "Groped By An Angel"
It's not as bad as I thought it was, but its still not anywhere
near good. Quite frankly, it's a wasted opportunity. Instead
of throwing away an episode on Quinn's inane quest for spirituality,
this would have been a good momentum builder towards "Fire" and
"Dye! Dye! My Darling." Instead, we get the three Js unable to
distinguish their English teacher from a guardian angel and
Steve Taylor's inexplicable grudge against his own son. (I'd like
to know why Steve hates his kid so much; Brian's antisocial
tendencies are much easier to understand.)
Some good lines, but it would have worked much better if the
plot revolved around Daria being dragooned into accompanying Jane
and Tom to the party and then left to talk to Quinn when the two
get caught up in some esoteric argument about Russian Lit or
something.
511: "Prize Fighters"
Doesn't work for me. Not sure why. The battle of the giant
brains had potential to be very entertaining, but it really
wasn't. Though it was interesting to see the dark side of each
of their natures: Jodie's ultracompetitiveness leading her to enter
behind Daria's back, Upchuck's business savvy and desire to network
turning him into a drooling synchophant, and Daria's principles and
apathy driving her to the empty and quixotic gesture of self-sabotage.
Andrew Landon was less of a twit than usual in this episode.
He had good points about the scholarship. And Jane's resentment,
even with the explanation, is fairly bizarre.

gotten together (cf. "That Was Then, This Is Dumb").

It's so perfect it's almost orchestrated. Stacy mentions the
neck zit, Tiffany says it's Quinn, and Sandi just stands there
smirking while Quinn is totally humiliated.
I don't think Sandi told Stacy and Tiffany to do anything like
that, but I don't doubt that she had them all "support Quinn,"
knowing that they'd call attention to themselves and when they
did, either Stacy or Tiffany (or both, as happened) would blow
Quinn's cover. And if Quinn called her on it, Sandi could, quite
rightly say that she did nothing but be helpful.

Looking "cute" implies that you look younger and attractive. If Sandi isn't old enough to drive, she had to at least rely on appearing to be old enough in the event that they run into anyone from the highway patrol, in which case she shouldn't want to look "cute," unless it's cute for someone who's 26, or something like that.

I can understand it. I just don't see what it has to do with
anything. Sandi looks like Sandi and if she's breaking the law,
I assume she's expecting not to be pulled over, or if she is
pulled over, that she can smile at the cop and he'll let her off.
I don't remember anyone referring to Sandi as looking "cute" in
this episode, as opposed to "attractive" or "mature."
I guess I'll have to remain lost.

She has refered to herself and the FC that way. In "The Lost Girls," she told Val about "the overall cuteness" in their own style, before chewing her out about wearing the school colors, a.k.a, "mixing primaries." Also in "Too Cute" they kept throwing the word around among each other including toward potential member Brooke after her nose job.

But in "the Daria database" which appeared around the second season it is revealed that Sandi's age at the time is 16 so she's at least one and a half/two years older than Quinn making her the same age as Daria. From what I know a person is legal to get his/her drivers licence at 16 in the USA.

But Sandi wasn't until IIFY Quinn's classmate so she could have well been in higher Classes than Quinn was in the seasons working up to the movie. If they are now classmates at the grade Daria was in at the first and second season this could mean that Sandi indeed failed to make the grade when at 18 years old she's attending the same classes that Daria did at her sixteenth. Maybe she would do good at forraying into "geek-land" herself sometimes. Afterall, just because you know the answer to a simple question doesn't make you a pedagogue.

You know, Sandi's not the shiniest apple in the cart. Maybe she did flunk a grade.
I've been meaning to write a fanfic which is, essentially, the backstory of Sandi - from the day her braces are removed to the moment she meets Quinn. I believe I'll include a bit about her being left back a grade. If nothing else, it provides more plot for the story.

I wouldn't be surprised. Either that, or she started kindergarten a year late to (ironically) help her socialize. In "Outvoted," I had Jane rant that Sandi had been held back in seventh grade.

I lean towards "let back" and "lying about her age."
(In an episode of "That 70's Show," a character was discovered to have been let back a year and lying about his age...annoyed the hell out of the other characters, 'cause he could've been buying them beer for a year then...)

Except that this /is/ the same school system that let Kevin Thompson and Brittney Taylor pass.
Sandi's 15 in seasons 1 and 2, 16 in seasons 3 and 4 (and in the Daria Database), and 17 in season 5.
Besides, which phrase can you more easily hear coming out of Linda Griffin's mouth?
"No, Sandi, you can not take the car even though you're only 15. I don't care how much of a boost it will give to your popularity."
or

But Kevin is the QB, and Brittney is the head cheerleader AND, more importantly, Kevin's girlfriend; if Brittney was held back, it might upset Kevin, and we can't have him upset while trying to play football.

But that would only apply to those years that Kevin was playing school ball, and does not account for the rest of his academic career. He gets passed because nobody wants to put up with him for a second year. :)

I'd tend to agree with this statement. Given what little we know of Linda, someone who will stop at nothing to advance herself, she would do this so Sandi could have an advantage come highschool.
Though I tend to thik it was because it was S1 and each character's traits hadn't been set in stone yet.

I always wondered why Sandi doesn't do better in English, since
she has a great voculabulary.
Well, actually I know why: because being seen to try in school
will hurt her popularity. The point is, I don't think Sandi is
as dumb as many other people think she is. She's no Daria, but
neither is she an ambulatory rock formation like Kevin.

Learners Permit + Mother who is willing to let her underaged daughter take the car by herself simply to help boost her popularity.
> Or does Sandi just ignore the law.
Popularity is more important than the law.
As for the differences in Sandi and Quinn's ages, Quinn is slightly younger than most of her classmates, and Sandi is slightly older. Sandi's birthday falls earlier in the school year than most other students, just as Quinn's falls later.
In Sandi's case, her mother probably held off on her entry into kindergarten, timing it specifically so that she'd be the first among her friends to get to drive (which means greater popularity). I don't remember exactly when in the 80s they raised the drinking age, but I wouldn't be surprised if Linda had even planned on Sandi being able to buy liquor during her senior year in high school (even more popularity).
As for Quinn, Helen probably got her enrolled in kindergarten as young as possible so that she could start back to work full time sooner. (Quinn is presumably in kindergarten during Boxing Daria).

Raise your hand if you went to Kindergarten at age 4. Plays hell with one's ability to compete socially. Or maybe I'm just a dork.

Maybe...but are parents really thinking about his when their kids are four?

Maybe she should set her up with a pot dealership, if she's that worried about popularity. Call Children and Family Services.

You know, maybe it's because I haven't seen any Linda Griffin in a while, but I really think the whole "Linda Griffin, master manipulater, number One, class-A domineering pysho-mom bitch from hell" is more a fan-fic cliche than a valid bit of canon. Now having said that I won't disagree that she pushes Sandi in unhealthy ways. But this whole debate has Linda crossing the line from everyday bad villany into comic book-ish super-villany. Seems too convoluted.

I wonder just how much of a monster Linda Griffin could be...we've seen so little of her, and all I can say of her is she has a voice *exactly* like her daughter's, she seems to push her daughter in seemingly unhealthy ways, and she can *really* push Helen Morgendorffer over the edge. Also that she seems to know her archery.
However, any manipulation of Sandi might be a caring parent trying to push her daughter in a way a caring (but possibly misinformed and deluded) parent *might* think is better. Or she might have a classic "Mama Rose" situation, pushing her daughter forward for her *own* glory.
(Aside: I always thought it odd that Linda Griffin and / or Tom Griffin did not appear in "Fat Like Me." After all, their daughter breaks a leg...I would've thought that would rate *some* attention...)

Finally some sense about this isssue. Perhaps a reminder of their
*real* relationship from "Gifted"(#208) is due:
(split-screen between Helen and Linda)
Helen: "Linda? How are you?"
Linda: "Well, I just made 120% of my target projection for this year,
earning me a bonus and an incentive check, so I'm pretty damn good.
How are you?"
Helen: "Um, I'm having a good year, too. Yes, a very good year. Yes.
Uh, thank you so much for letting Quinn stay with you this weekend.
Now, she sometimes needs a little supervision..."
Linda: "Don't worry. I've got firm ground rules. First and foremost:
no boys."
Helen: "N-O, no."
Linda: "Sandi has to beat them off with a stick. (laughs) Who am I
kidding? I had the same problem at her age."
(split-screen between Quinn and Sandi)
Sandi: "So, Ricky and the guys will be waiting for us at Tower Point."
Quinn(writes): "Wear smudge-proof lipstick."
Linda: "I've already hidden the keys to the car, in case Sandi gets
any ideas."
Helen: "You know, I used to have to beat them off with a stick, too."
Sandi: "I made a copy of the keys to the car."
Quinn(writes): "Bring scarf to avoid convertible hair."
Linda: "And lights out by 11:00."
Helen: "Did you hear that? About the stick?"
Sandi: "Then, after my mother checks on us at 11:00, we climb out my
window, grab the car, and meet the guys."
Quinn: "Boy, Sandi, you've thought of everything. No wonder you're
president of the Fashion Club."
Helen: "My, Linda, you've thought of everything. No wonder you're on
the board of the Lawndale Businesswoman's Alliance."
Now does that sound like someone who wants her daughter to have it all, just to be the most popular and powerful? I think not.

There /is/ a very strong "my daughter is better than your daughter" vibe going on there.
And there is that bit from Daria Dance Party. "Sandi, I warned you. To volunteer is to say, "use me." "
Of course, if Linda is working at 120%, maybe she's sort of the flip side of Helen. Work, work, work, deal with Sandi, work, work, work, let Tom deal with the boys, work, .... This may make Linda less than attentive about those moments when Sandi decides to take the car out on her own. Might also explain the whole "Fat Like Me" thing too.
Then again, there might be an interesting story in the idea of Sandi striving to be the most popular girl in school all in an effort to earn the love and approval of a distant mother who appears more interested in her own carreer than in spending time with her daughter. Hmm.

M'kay people, here's my picks:
1- The Lawndale Files- Far and away the best, in my twisted little Cold War-child mind. Come on! Communism and Extra-terrestrials, self-induced mind games? The Mulder/Scully clones? Artie!!! Now there's an underused character if I ever saw one! And Comrade Jake, the Sellout? I chuckle just thinking about it. My favorite line: "Come on now, aliens don't hide in the bushes. It's probably a stalker. Yes,it's just a stalker out to plant a teen in a shallow grave. I feel much better now." Another line: "We should be upset now, right?" "I don't know, Daria. Those oufits look pretty good."
2-Road Worrier- Being a fencesitter, I couldn't really pick this one over TLF, but real close tie. Jane tormenting Daria over her crush on Trent, The greasy spoon scene, The "B" plot complemented nicely. "Just remember to take plenty of rest breaks and stay hydrated." and "You go on to Alternapalooza, and I'll stay here and emerge tomorrow in my new life as a waitress."
3-Groped by an Angel- Good gags in this one, some fairly deep dialogue, and we get to see(almost) the whole fashion club throw up. It was kinda nice to see Daria be kind to Quinn, and hear an (almost)song from MS Too many forced parts, though. "There's no commision involved, is there?" in reverential tones, and the look betwee Helen and Jake, was probably the best lines in it.
4-See Jane Run- Not bad, but it just didn't grab me as well as the later eps.
5- Prize Fighters- See above.

Favorite:
The Road Worrier - Great episode, with a scene good enough to make Daria smile.
Runners-up
See Jane Run - A close second. Daria could have been more supportive, but it was nice to see Jane bask in the glory for a little bit.
Groped By An Angel - Once again, Daria has to compromise her principles so Quinn can feel better. Funny how believing in angels was an exploration of spirituality, yet religion was never once mentioned.
The Lawndale Files - A silly episode with some funny bits, particularly the lights from the woods.
Prize Fighters - Unspectacular. Daria should have known better and done better.

This is almost the definitive Daria episode. It’s got everything.
Loser: #511, Prize Fighters
Daria acts way out of character in this one, and her usual biting remarks are in response to a situation that seems almost totally contrived.

I'm going to have to split my vote between "Road Worrier" and "See Jane Run". In order of preference, I've got:
Road Worrier - It's all been said. And every comment ever made (good or bad) is true.
ties with:
See Jane Run - The fact that the two friends are outsiders together doesn't prevent them from having thier own personalities and agendas, and neither does the tension prevent this episode from being even funnier than some of the very good S4 episodes employing a similar wedge.
Groped by an Angel - The sisterly interaction overcomes some of the inherent weakness of an episode based around Quinn's self-centered worldview. One great thing about the show is that even when a character walks around with as big a bull's eye painted on them as Quinn does, the humor at thier expense is never brutal. In the end, Quinn is still marginally likable even in Daria's eyes.
Prize Fighters - This one had a good premise, but reminded me of Fizz Ed in it's heavy-handedness. Its easy to tell an audience that a situation is bogus. Making us laugh about it is a trick, and many episodes have pulled it off better than this one. Still, it was interesting to watch the characters' differing approaches to the same goal.
Lawndale Files - This is the only Daria episode I didn't bother watching all the way through. It tried too hard; went too far over the top; and started falling, falling... I think it might have cratered itself somewhere in Springfield. Then again I loved the similarly slapstick "Murder She Snored", so go figure.

I haven't seen #211, "See Jane Run", so I'm going to have to skip that one. Hope I get to see it during the Daria marathon. I'd also like to see #511, "Prize Fighters", during the marathon since that was the only episode in Season 5 I missed. The story's an interesting one -- I missed it but planned to tape it the following Saturday so I could view it. And what was on instead? The Real World or Road Rules, one of those two. Lousy MTV reality shows!
Now that I've gotten that Jake-style rant out of my system, here's my views of the remaining 3 episodes:
I liked "The Road Worrier". It had Daria in a rare position (especially for Season 1): stifling her well-developed sarcasm for a guy she likes! However, in a trend that develops over the seasons, Daria's fears prove unnecessary, as Trent appreciates her sarcasm and she is able to bond with Trent pretty nicely. Daria just has to get through some minor (but hilarious) mishaps to get a chance to bond with Trent.
"The Lawndale Files" was also an episode I liked. We see a lot of mistakes that happened because someone overheard a comment but misunderstood the meaning of it (the use of the word "alien" is a good example), or seeing something really strange going on and jumping to a wrong conclusion (Quinn's dressing up in a black turtleneck, and Trent's song being the primary examples). This provides us with quite a few hilarious situations, like when Upchuck, Kevin, Brittany, Jodie, Mack, & Mr. O'Neill converge in the woods, and they each have different reasons for being there!
"Groped by an Angel" wasn't a terrible episode, but a little too much time might have been spent on incidental issues which could've been better spent on the main issue of the story. At least we see Quinn trying to develop spirituality, even if she goes about it the wrong way (as she often does in various ways during the series). After all, even if Quinn had a guardian angel, it's not necessarily at her beck and call during minor mishaps -- it'll probably be more likely to show up when she really needs help.
My pick? "Road Worrier" by a small margin, followed by "The Lawndale Files", and then "Groped by an Angel".

Damn! There goes my perfect streak. I had picked every winner until here, maybe it'll turn around. Yeah right. :-) I debated back and forth between the 2 for a couple of hours before settling on 311. Ah, well.

Damn, "Prize Fighters really sucked, didn't it? I think there was only one vote where it wasn't dead last, and then it was 4th, again I say about this episode, blecch!
I don't think we had one so throughly trounced except for maybe "Fizz Ed".
BTW, odds are I'll wait the 3 days inbetween and post the 12's Sat. night and scale back the alotted time for the runoff vote. I may give the 13's out only 2 days after the 12's to keep on schedule also. For now, go with the first statement.

Well, I haven't seen 511, so it's out of the running for me.
"Road Worrier" was good because it takes two traditions that are nearly ubiquitous in fiction about high school -- the road trip and the rock concert -- and does them both in such an understated, very *Daria* way (the road trip only takes one day, and they never even get to the concert). It also has some really good lines ("See those trees? You can pee behind those trees!"), and most of the supporting characters are used well (especially Trent, Jesse, and the Fashion Club).
"See Jane Run" is a precursor to a lot of the early Tom-stuff, with Jane trying to make other friends, Daria being hostile and possessive. It gives us some insight into Jane's personality -- she's not just a Daria clone with a paintbrush in her hand, she does her own thing, even when "her thing" is trying what everyone else is doing. In the end, Jane removes herself from the corrupt system by which athletic performance buys grades, and she and Daria both admit they were wrong and are better people for it. But the grade-buying system is a little too overt to be realistic, and the moral's a little too obvious.
"The Lawndale File" was an all around funny episode, but it was kind of contrived. Everything lined up too neatly: Quinn's neck-zit, the presense of the immigration officials, and the pizza delivered by Artie all happened at the same time, sure. I also don't understand why Helen and Jake heard "alien" and automatically thought "immigrant" rather than "space alien." But it was definitely worth it for the amusement factor, between O'Neill's communist rally, the FC in black turtlenecks, and Daria starting to worry about space aliens.
"Groped by an Angel" is definitely the bottom of this bunch. Brittany's "C-" party, the 3 Js ready to fight Quinn's guardian angel, Sandi trying to steal the spotlight yet again, and the irrelavent presense of Mystic Spiral... yawn. (Was there a B-plot that actually involved *Daria*?)
So my vote goes to "Road Worrier," with "The Lawndale File" second and "See Jane Run" third.

Been gone for a bit, back now.
What a difficult decision...3 very good episodes duking it out.
I'm going to have to go with Road Worrier, because it has stood the test of time. See Jane Run has not been quite so lucky, but it is still very good. The Lawndale File was extremely funny and one of thebest from season 3. They tie for second. Followed by Prize Fighters, which was allright, in *my* opinion. Followed by Groped by an Angel, the worst episode of the series. Hoo.
