Gee, wasn't that just lame? :-)

Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday they celebrated. I'm here with a late day Christmas gift, maybe coal, maybe something you've always dreamed of, it's up to you, here come the 09's.....

109- "Too Cute" When an FC applicant gets plastic surgery to improve her appearance, Quinn starts to worry as her place in the FC is threatened as she is the last one brought in, and so is the first to go with a new member. This gets heightened when the rest of the FC all get nosejobs as well.

She gets Daria and herself out of school to see Dr. Shar, who preys on her insecurities, and convinces her that she needs $6,000.00 in plastic surgery. This doesn't work on Daria, even though she gets "temporary bust augmentations" which give Upchuck a thrill, and nothing else. Quinn is so bad she even takes up a collection thanks to an offhand comment by Jane. It gets to the point where Daria has to get involved and "Stop the madness!" Even going as far as to say that her sister is perfect, physically. Even that doesn't help until Brooke suffers a nasal collapse and is no longer threatening her rank in the FC.

Oh yeah, Kevin gives money away to people to make them like him after he dons a special ugly face as part of a science experiment, when all he has to do is take off the makeup, but then you know this is Kevin.....

A good episode here. Offers the message right off the bat in Barch's class. How the perception of attractiveness affects human behavior. Quinn is so obsessed at this point with her popularity, she will do anything to hold on to it. Including plastic surgery. A sad but true fact, that people are influenced by looks and often fail to see past that, essentially this is the message here, and only those close to you won't care one bit how you look.

Lines:

Daria: Wanna borrow my stapler?

Jane: Take up a collection?
<Quinn runs off>
Daria: You're paying for my therapy.

Upchuck: Call me country bumpkin, but what is it?

Jane: It's a fake boob.
<Upchuck gets flustered and runs off>
Jane: Guess he's not ready for a physical relationship.

209- "Ill" Daria develops a mysterious rash at a Mystik Spiral gig. She runs off afraid to face anyone, the rash vanishes by the time she wakes up the next morning. Jake on one of his kicks thinks Daria is doing drugs. What else is new with him? The rash does come back at school, and forces Daria to the nurses office, and then to the hospital for some tests, which of course reveal nothing.

Meanwhile, Brittany, who was at the club also cheating on Kevin, is the only one who sees the rash as it first develops, and makes a deal with Daria not to mention it to anyone, eventually leading to Brittany's best line ever, IMO.

Jane eventually lets the secret loose, and Brittany, Kevin, Jodie, Mack, and Quinn are all in the room waiting to see how she is, surprising Daria, because she didn't think that many people cared about her. Eventually she's released, finding out the rash is being caused by anxiety, thanks her parents(a moment in itself rarely seen), and is off with Jane, who has asked Trent to drive them, thus bringing back the rash at full speed.

A very good episode, IMO. It shows that more people care for Daria than she ever thought could. It shows she has more friends than she may realize. Even her parents care for her, which is a strange revelation to hear for some teenagers. A cute ending as well. The running gag with Mrs. Sullivan was amusing as well as Jake's drug rants. Cleverly done episode without any glaring faults, IMO.

Lines:

Brittany: Do you promise not to tell Kevin about Terry or Jerry or whatever?

Daria: In the unlikely event that through some bizarre set of circumstances I end up conversing with Kevin, I won't tell him about Terry or Jerry.

Brittany: No one's told you anything interesting about me, have they?

Jane: No one's ever told me anything interesting about you.

Brittany: That's a relief!

Brittany<at the pizza place w/Kevin, Mack, and Jodie> the speech about the "Deals" she made.

Kevin: Sooooo, she is in the hospital?

309- "Jake of Hearts" Jake suffers a mild heart attack, and brings in his mother to take care of him. This causes some changes in Helen and Quinn. Helen abandons the workaholic mode to try to impress Grandma Ruth who doesn't like the way she does things for her "little Jakey", and doesn't like Helen too much at all. Quinn takes a sudden interest in medicine, and starts concerning herself with becoming a heart doctor so she can save Jake the next time he has a heart attack. Postponing all dates, she begins coordinating outfits around a stethoscope, reading books with no pictures and lots of big words.

Daria, meanwhile has to deal with the family crisis at home, and has to deal with 2 DJ's who have been granted a deal which allows them to broadcast from LHS all week. Now some DJ's are hilarious, our local DJ, Bill Keeler is one, Bing and the Spatula Man are NOT! Annoying as all hell, humiliating contests for the cheapest prizes,(a bumper sticker for a date with Upchuck?) overall downright lame and annoying, and they're constantly on Daria, who finally has to tell them off by telling everyone about her father's heart attack, bringing down everyone and causing the DJ's to run for the hills. At home she and her father bond closer than "OHB" ever could get them to. She also tells off her grandmother in front of her mother and sister as a favor to them. Jake is all the better because he realized he has outlived his father, and thus is better than him at something. With Jake better, Helen and Quinn return to life before the heart attack.

So-so episode here. The moments Daria and Jake were together were good, and Helen and Quinn's attempts to change were as well, but they reverted back, predictably, there was no way you could really like Ruth in any way, her voice was done by the same person who did the voice for Val in TLG, so that didn't help. The DJ bits were bad and nearly painful to watch, the only good part was where Daria tells them off. An episode that could've done so much more with Jake and his family history, instead was replaced by 2 DJ's who couldn't be wacky enough to save their lives. Blah.

Lines:

Ruth: Didn't you give him a bell or something?

Helen: We were just about to, yes........ this doesn't say anything about a bell!

Helen: Daria, what's going on up there?

Daria: It looks like we may have another patient on our hands.

Jake: Wahoo! I'm better than him, I'm better than him at living! He was dead at my age, Wahooooooo!!!!

Daria's speech to the Z93 crew.

409- "Mart of Darkness" Daria accompanies Jane to one of those warehouse stores after Tom eats her gummi bears which were to be used for a statue. Daria, is looking for a bootlace to replace the one which Quinn took to fix her accessory bag. They spend forever tracking down a salesgirl who turns out to be Andrea. Then get caught in a long line as they get locked in the store as the power goes out.

Quinn has to head to the warehouse store to pick up sunscreen along with the rest of the FC after she forgot to bring some to the LHS football barbecue.

Kevin and Brittany have to go to the store for some BBQ sauce that Mr. O'neill forgot, and eventually buy a ton of stuff to make up for a mistake Kevin made, none of which is BBQ sauce.

Trent and Jesse take Tom to the store so he can make up with Jane, and so Trent can find a new headlight for his car. But their stupidity upsets Tom who doesn't ever find Jane.

Mr. DeMartino is at the store for the free samples they give out, trying to make ends meet of a thin salary. Fights with Mrs Johanseen over cheese logs, while getting chased out by security, trips over the grease pan sending grease into the electrical outlet shorting out the whole store and stranding everyone inside.

At the picnic O'neill tries to talk to Kevins father about his grades. But he just wants O'neill to just pass Kevin so he could concentrate on football, when O'neill objects, Mr. Thompson picks a fight with him, only to get laid out by Ms. Barch, and the whole thing degenerates into one big fight.

Did something actually happen in this episode? I'm not sure. Actually plenty did, but it all led absolutely nowhere. No resolutions to any of the plots that came up, everything was pretty much left hanging. I'm not an Andrea liker, so her only comments of S4 did nothing for me. A major plot contrivance to have Daria's boots off, as the only time they're ever off is when she's in bed. Overall this episode flat out stunk by Daria standards, decent when compared to anything else though.

Lines:

Jane: I don't have a leg to stand on, do I?

Daria: I'd rather not answer that, Stumpy.

Trent: Those Boysencranstraw candles stink, man.

Jesse: Yeah, but chicks like them.

FC: Ewwww, what's that smell, ugh!

509- "Life in the Past Lane" Jane meets a new boyfriend who is into the whole "retro" thing. Dresses like the 40's, 50's and 60's including zoot suits, fedoras and the like. Daria and Tom aren't too crazy about him as they see Nathan as a jerk, but won't tell Jane as she seems happy to be around him, and they don't want to disrupt anything after the "triangle" fiasco. Jane goes as far as dressing up in period garb all day long, even at school, though she realizes it's all for fun. However they get in a fight over Jane's choice of clothing for Upchuck's magic show, Jane sees how passionately Nathan is into the retro thing, almost too seriously, and after he questions her owning sweatpants, she tells him to get out. Afterwards they all meet up and Jane admits what Daria and Tom knew all along. Daria also realizes it wa all in fun and will try to remember that if she ever has any.

Meanwhile, Upchuck is doing magic to try to lure a lady into his lair, and it actually works. Stacy, who is so intrigued by a trick he's done, won't leave him alone until she finds out. Later at the magic show, she appears as Upchuck's assistant on stage, shocking everyone. Going along with the trick, as if she's forgotten something and begins crying hysterically because it appears Upchuck is locked in the trunk and suffocating, after another snide comment by Sandi, Stacy retaliates with the very line Sandi used earlier and upstages her, as Upchuck reappears from the back of the auditorium unharmed.

This episode didn't really make a lot of sense to me. The scenes with Upchuck and Stacy and the magic show were funny, but the entire thing with Jane really did nothing for me. I didn't like Nathan at all as a person, I can't buy the fact that Jane would get so into this that she'd dress up all day, even to school. When they'd go out I could understand, but all day long? Made no real sense. At least they didn't go into another round of Daria/Tom relationdateship problems again as they could've after Daria's "rut" comments. This episode was well liked by many, I just don't see it myself.

Lines:

Jane: I'll meet up with you guys at the pizza place, first I need to pick up an eraser, a nice big cute one.

Upchuck: There are so many things I can't get out of my head, like that dream about the mermaids and the fudge sauce......

Jane: I bought tickets for Upchuck the irritating, you know, first the freaky, then the tiki.

Sandi: Good thing he's buried alive in there, so you won't have to seek your revenge on him for humiliating you like this.

Stacy<stops crying> Oh, Sandi, you are so naieve!

My favorite: I have a sense here that I won't be in the majority here, I was surprised with "Daria!", but I would highly doubt it here. I expect the favorite here to be 509, but for me, my winner here is 209- "Ill". Why? It's just a good solid all around episode that proves Daria knows and likes more people than she lets on, and the ending was a cute touch, even if it was obvious throughout. Brittany had her best lines in this episode of the entire series run. I just like it.

Followed by: "Too Cute", "Jake of Hearts", "Life in the Past Lane", and lastly, "Mart of Darkness"

There you have it. Even if it's too late now, Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a good night!

A.J.

The pressure from the FC to get plastic surgery she doesn't need, provokes Daria to convince her that she's much too good looking to get some, and probably won't need to for a long time. Sure, they're such complete opposites it's hard to beleive they AREN'T cousins. Yet she goes against her usual attitude toward Quinn, and convinces her that SHE'S the ideal that many women are striving to be.

Another episode that everybody else hates but me. I think those little annoyances like Grandma Ruth, Bing and The Spatula Man tend to bring out what's best about Daria. They're the things that provoke her to make the witty sarcastic remarks we all love from her.

Her speech to Grandma Ruth about her expectations of her daughter-in-law and granddaughters was pretty good too. But like you, I think the episode should've revealed more about the Morgendorffers. Fortunately what id did reveal was that Ruth has some regrets about going along with the previous traditional role of women.

Would anybody notice this episode if Andrea didn't smile at Daria & Jane? The true positive aspect of that segment was that it pointed out that Daria & Jane weren't as low on the high school totem pole as they thought they were.

The real negative aspect of this episode was that it went out of it's way to make Trent look incredibly stupid.

I've got to say something about some of what Nathan was nostalgic for. First his car: I pointed out that it was a 1957 Ford Fairlane Sunliner, but the MTV website says it's a SKYliner. For those of you in the know, the difference between the Sunliner and Skyliner was that the Skyliner had the solid convertible roof, whereas the Sunliner's roof was vinyl like most other convertibles. I thought that roof looked solid when it was up, but the Sunliner didn't have the panoramic rear windshield of other models, and the rear roof pillars were much wider, and had the Skyliner insignia over a metal plate on the bottom. Nathan's car looked like it had the roofline of other '57 Fords, or perhaps even a '56. Second, when Daria brought up the more negative aspects of the post-war era, he didn't defend things like McCarthyism and the KKK's efforts to maintain Jim Crow laws, so at least he wasn't ignorant of the things that were such a blight on the period he's so fond of.

On the down side, they made the triangle from Season 4 into a whole new running gag to replace the Daria/Quinn "she's not my sister" gag that was killed in "Lucky Strike"(#506).

This episode was well liked by many, I just don't see it myself.

Stacy's comeback at Sandi played significant a role in winning over those who did. Quite possibly the best "Stacy" episode.

Well, like the 08's, no votes for me yet, but I'd have to put "Mart of Darkness" at the bottom just like you.

I don't have a lot of time, so in quick order:

1. Too Cute -- Too damn funny.

2. Ill -- Following "Gifted," it seemed like a letdown. But subsequent viewings have helped it grow on me.

3. Jake of Hearts -- I still think this could have been better, but it beats out any other episode that tries to have Daria and Jake bond.

4. Mart of Darkness -- I really *don't* like this episode, but at least it stays focused around the central "Daria" characters.

5. Life in the Past Lane -- The costumes were cool, but the rest failed to capture my interest. Will always be remembered for the Stacy subplot.

I can eliminate this one right off---because it's one of the ones I don't have on tape. I *think* I've seen it...but the memory of maybe seeing it *once* isn't the same as watching it over and over again. Abstain.

>209- "Ill"

Now, this was fun. Daria subject to psychosomatic (or is it psychosomantic with an "m"?) rashes. Daria doesn't run to Jane or even Helen and / or Jake. Quinn tries to help. Jane can't keep a secret.

A top episode.

>309- "Jake of Hearts"

Jake's heart finally betrays him and he takes to his bed. Quinn and Helen alter their behavior because of it. Grandma Morgendorffer comes to take care of Jake. Daria, the voice of sanity in this episode (at least), returns things to right and normal, despite the yammering of two brainless DJs at school.

I liked the part in the hospital, where the doctor asks if anything might be causing Jake stress. I've always thought that, as far as stress goes, Helen, Quinn, and Daria would be known as "carriers."

Another top episode.

>409- "Mart of Darkness"

I liked this one, though the main plot was a little contrived (after all, how often do you see Daria lounging around with her boots off? And couldn't Quinn just ask her for a shoelace?) But it was a lot of fun, seeing the various characters *behave* down at the discount warehouse. The picnic scenes were funny, too. We got to see Kevin's parents, and discover the problem didn't begin with him. And Andrea got dialog...what more can somebody ask for?

>509- "Life in the Past Lane"

I liked this one, too, but the B plot (Upchuck's magic act, assisted by the lovely Stacy) stole the show. All through the season, it seems Stacy has been gathering some strength of character (remember the end of "Art Burn"?), and this one just capped it.

Besides, seeing Jane wear something other than those clothes she usually wears was a lot of fun, too.

Now. Eliminating 109 off the bat, that leaves me with, er, uh...

209 "Ill"
309 "Jake of Hearts"
509 "Life in the Past Lane"
409 "Mart of Darkness"

Tough choices. "Mart of Darkness" drops to last place only 'cause of its contrived plot...other than that, any of them could be anywhere...but I'll stick with "Ill" in first place...

Best episode of this lot would be Ill. Then a toss-up between Too Cute and Jake of Hearts (the only episode I don't hve some type of copy of, and I haven't seen it in oh, a year). Then Mart of Darkness, which was funny, but pointless. Finally Life in the Past Lane. Now, let me tell you. This was probably the worst episode of the series, after the Jonathan Greensburg episodes. My friend saw it and told me it was the absolute worst. I believe the most likely reason of this is simply this: Anne Bernstein has lost touch with the series. Hints of it can be seen in Of Human Bonding. It's not so noticeable in Sappy Anniversary. But boy, is it ever-apparent here. This tone and general feel of this episode is completely off. Was this _Daria_ I was watching? Too long away from the characters just writing one episode per season (and often, ones that aren't stellar) and this was bound to happen. She went from writing excellent season 1 episodes to one of the suckiest of season 5. I'm hoping she;s not cowriting the movie. Wow. I'll stop babbling now. On with the votes.

From Jake of Hearts you forgot the best Jake quote ever!

Ruth: Oh Jake your father never carried on or complaint like this.

Jake: Of course not. Expressing emotion requires a *soul*!

My vote is for:

Mart of Darkness

(I love my Tom and Trent was a nice bonus!)

>
Hmm--actually, I'm guessing you'd be wrong here in thinking most folks would pick #509 as the favorite, A.J. (I haven't read any other posts on this thread yet, honest!), and that you'd be right in believing #209, "Ill" is the favorite, which I do, by far and away. "Ill" was the first bona fide 'Daria' ep that had an undercurrent of things that went in favor of Daria: (1) Her parents really DO care for her welfare, and (2) the so-called "popular" people really DO care about Daria, too. I liked the reaction of the school nurse when she first saw a red-faced Daria: "EWWWWWWWW". That was hilarious! Wonder how this ep compares to the other 'shipper eps with Daria and Trent? I haven't read much from anyone else on this...

The others:

(2) #109 - "Too Cute" - The first bona fide 'Daria' ep (to me) showing that Quinn really DOES care about the opinion of her "cousin", even above the other FC members.

(3) #309 - "Jake of Hearts" - We got to see Jake's mom. Too bad we haven't(IICY? perhaps?) seen Helen's yet...

(4) #409 - "Mart of Darkness" - We finally saw the Thompsons--and I don't want to see them again. More of the building tension that will tear Jane and Tom apart.

(5) #509 - "Life In the Past Lane" - Jane looked quite attractive in her garbs, and Stacy "gets back" at Sandi. Other than that, eh.

Thanks.

I only figured that because when this episode first aired back in June, everyone seemed to love it, no one, or maybe a very few, like me thought it didn't feel right with the rest of the series. The overall response then was positive and I figured that would be the case here as well.

This is definitely the last time I'll say something like that. Not only have I been wrong both times, but both times the one's I've gone with have been runaway winners. I'll just keep my mouth shut from now on about stuff like that.

In order of preference:

#1: Ill
I thought the "social hell" dream sequence was one of the most memorable scenes ever, and it pushes an otherwise great episode to the top of my list.

#2: Life in the Past Lane
The 'A' plot didn't do much for me except to reinforce Jane's generally admirable quality of doing what she pleases without worrying about what her class-mates think. Upchuck runs away with this episode. Maybe the second funniest of S5.

#3: Jake of Hearts
I like this better than alot of people seemed to. Maybe Helen, Daria and Jane all end up reacting towards characters that are excessively superficial and grating. Still, plenty of humor and sarcasm survive in the regular characters' lines.

#4: Too Cute.
Just didn't grab me for some reason. I don't remember disliking it. Seemed to be trying to make fun of people's obsession with looks by, um, obsessing over the characters' looks. Maybe it would fair better on a second viewing.

#5: Mart of Darkness.
I seemed to remember this one being summed up in TV Guide as "Daria searches for new boot laces". Yep. That's pretty much what you get here. The fat woman is crudely stereotypical even next to Kevin and Brittaney. The picnic scenes left no impression on me. Still better than a sharp stick in the eye.

>Gee, wasn't that just lame? :-)
Yes, very.

109 - standout parts to me are Quinn's "one of those vicious THINGS!" rant, and Kevin asking Ms. Barch if he can take the ugly face off. Dr. Shar's just plain creepy. Andrea got a good line in, though, when Quinn was on her collection drive:
"Aren't you even a *little* worried there may be a Hell?"
209 - if you haven't noticed yet, I kinda forgot the show existed during S2. Can't vote on this one.
309 - "Quinn, maybe you should start with something easier. Many coloring books feature hearts... and rainbows."
Also: "This surgery stuff is HARD!"
Good lines in this one, but didn't do much for me.
409 - second big fight between Tom and Jane in a row - hmm, the writers couldn't possibly be leading up to something. No way. {sarcasm off} "Art supplies" is a running joke in my family now, in terms of seeing gummi bears in a store leads to "oh look, art supplies".
I really like this episode for some reason. Maybe it's Andrea. Maybe it's the cheese log wars, silly though they are. Maybe it's Jane "Stumpy" Lane (the quote's been given), as she at least figures out when she's screwed up after talking the sitch over with a neutral party. In terms of S5, Daria seemed to take longer in that department.
509 - actually a good use of Upchuck, for once. A main character who's not in the Fashion Club changes outfits to impress a guy. Stacy's backbone seems to be here to stay. Daria asks Tom if they're in a rut after Jane says they might be, instead of just complaining through the episode. On the plus side all.
best here - 409/509 tie

M'kay, Without my usual blather
#1- Ill, Let's hear it for psychosomatic(no "n",Robert)rashes,The Brittany subplot, and the death scene
#2-Jake of Hearts- "Is there anything in his home life that's causing him stress?"
#3-Too Cute- Anything involving plastic surgery amuses me.
#4-Mart of Darkness- "Whoever's got their hand on my butt, please remove it immediately!" Who do you think it was, Stacy or Quinn?
#5-Life in the past Lane- To be honest, this should be a tie with MoD,I liked the subplot w/Upchuck&Stacy and Jane's wardrobe, but overall the story seemed forced.

Favorite: Ill - A great, great episode. Angst, humor, pathos, the whole schmeer. We even get several shots of Daria in varing outfits, with and withour glasses.

Runners-up

Too Cute - Sisterly bonding, and a real problem with an almost-real resolution.

Jake of Hearts - The concerned angst was interesting, and the cheap deejays were kind of amusing.

Mart of Darkness - Hey Andrea had real lines, and she used them to let Daria and Jane know they have a rep for being grade-A bi***es.

Life in the Past Lane - Jane's dating someone who thinks he's interesting, unfortunately Daria's dating someone who doesn't know he's boring. The B p[lot could easily have placed this episode several notches up.

Surprise, surprise again! Boy was my prediction ever off. Things could still change but that's unlikely.

I also figured "Jake of Hearts" would never be headed for the cellar. Not a favorite, but I thought it would get 2 or 3 votes, and that may happen, but so far, I'm very surprised all around.

>109- "Too Cute" When an FC applicant gets plastic surgery to improve her appearance, Quinn starts to worry as her place in the FC is threatened as she is the last one brought in, and so is the first to go with a new member. This gets heightened when the rest of the FC all get nosejobs as well.

An early "message" episode, and why not. Just don't expect me to choose it as a favorite. Loved the fake boob gags, and the dream sequences are among my favorite things about Daria. Another vote here for the Andrea/Quinn exchange -- Quinn scares the goth chick.

Nice use of the interplay/powerplay between Jake, Helen and the doctor. It kinda got weird, having half the school in the "unpopular girl's" room. I half expected her to lean over, grab the phone, press zero and say, "Hello, room service? Send up a larger room."

Clever device to hang a plot on...like those classic Star Trek episodes (double geek alert!) where Spock breaks down and his emotions become apparent...what if Daria couldn't hide her feelings?

>309- "Jake of Hearts" Jake suffers a mild heart attack, and brings in his mother to take care of him. This causes some changes in Helen and Quinn. Helen abandons the workaholic mode to try to impress Grandma Ruth who doesn't like the way she does things for her "little Jakey", and doesn't like Helen too much at all.

Jake becomes less of a cypher, and I'm okay with it. I wanted to kick grandma down the stairs. How did the Morgendorffers survive with Helen in the kitchen? How much pizza did these girls eat, growing up? Quinn trying on being smart again...but what really makes this eq hard to watch are Bing and the Spatula Man. I don't listen to commercial radio anymore thanks to guys like that.

Of all the "experimental" episodes, in construction and tone, I like this one the best. It really does have a flow, despite the weird premise. Quinn stealing the boot lace is burned into my mind...sibling larceny, it's almost like they're real people. Of course it's required 'shipper viewing, as we watch the thin edge of the wedge between Jane and Tom go in.

>509- "Life in the Past Lane" Jane meets a new boyfriend who is into the whole "retro" thing. Dresses like the 40's, 50's and 60's including zoot suits, fedoras and the like. Daria and Tom aren't too crazy about him as they see Nathan as a jerk,

Me, too. Boy, Jane can't get a break. But it was enormously selfish of Daria and Tom to not even try to mingle at the open-air nostalgia fest, and that bugs me. Not unwatchable, but I wouldn't make an effort to find the tape.

>My favorite: I have a sense here that I won't be in the majority here, I was surprised with "Daria!", but I would highly doubt it here. I expect the favorite here to be 509, but for me, my winner here is 209- "Ill".

Yeah, Ill is the best in terms of character study, but Mart of Darkness runs a close second. Then: Too Cute, Jake of Hearts, Life in the Past Lane.

Laura runs off to re-find her camp friends in the hopes that the other Daria-philes will have 109 and 209 on tape....

While she's doing that, her alternate personality, Bubba the Love Sponge, will be doing the voting. Please keep that in mind.

309: Okay episode. I've found myself yelling, "Merry Christmas you wonderful old garden gnome!" quite frequently recently. Also, the bunny slave in me (that's a whole 'nother personality) has her favorite line here:
Jane: You could always dive into a wooded thicket. Hey, it works for bunnies.
I liked the premise of the ep but found it could have been done better.

409: I spent some time scratching my head after watching this episode (and also singing, "I like barbeques!") Having seen only a handful of eps previously, I couldn't figure out what was going on. (Such as, who's that girl working at Payday?) Now that I've solved these quandries, it just seems mediocre.

509: Out of the bunch I've seen, this one has to get my vote. Can't really explain.

I could be doing something productive now, but why would I want to do that?

#9: Too Cute, Ill, Jake of Hearts, Mart of Darkness, Life in the Past Lane

WINNER: #309, Jake of Hearts

We get some much-needed insight into Jake, a little applied melodrama, and you have to give credit to a show that can make someone having a heart attack a funny event.

Loser: #109, Ill

Not that it was that bad, I just felt like it could have been better.

109: "Too Cute"

Everything a Daria episode should be. Easy target, characters
in place, perfect message. So why is it so awful?

Too Cute was IIRC the second Daria ep I saw, after "The Misery
Chick." I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. There'rea
few funny lines, but nothing truly memorable. Maybe the target
is too broad. I realize that self-image is a major issue for
everyone, especially teenage girls, but there's an after-school-
specialish quality to the hammerlike blows of the heavy-handed
message that is unusual for _Daria._

Wait. One good line, when Quinn tries to persuade Andrea to chip in:

"Aren't you afraid that there might be a hell?"

209: "Ill"

I like Ill. Daria and Brittany in the grunge club were funny,
as were Jake's worries about drugs and Daria's reaction ("Quinn's
clean"). Dr. Phillips was also very funny. ("What is it with
your mother?")

I know that both Daria and Brittany had ulterior motives for helping
each other in this ep, but I do get the feeling that they kind of
like each other, or don't dislike each other. And Jodie and
Mack were well used.

309: "Jake of Hearts"

Not as bad as many people think. There're some really nice things
in this episode. Jane and Daria's reactions to the DJs are funny,
even if the DJs themselves are lame, and Tiffany has a classic moment ("Upchuck? Ewwwww....").

The episode belongs to the Family Morgendorffer, though. The effect
that Jake's heart attack and the ensuing Hurricane Ruth has on
both Quinn and Helen is interesting. It might have been nice if
some of that stuff had been followed up on (like Quinn's interest
in medicine). Jane is very funny, as usual.

We also get to see Daria fully engaged. She helps calm her father's
fears, both about death and about being an inadequate parent, and
then drives off all of her tormentors, Bing and the Spatula Man by
rubbing their noses in the unpleasant side of life in general and
Grandma Ruth by doing the same with Ruth's life in particular.
Helen and Quinn's reactions are telling.

"How does she do that?" "You got me."

Answer: Daria listens. And is willing to use the information she
gathers.

409: "Mart of Darkness"

What a mess. Useful only for a couple of things. It shows Tom and
Jane's problems escalating, and gives an idea of how poorly prep
school Tom relates to most aspects of Jane's boho world (including
her brother). It also gives Andrea a nice scene that allows us to
see how other outcasts see Jane and Daria, while at the same time
giving OH a chance to show some empathy.

We also get to learn more about the Thompsons. Everyone who wanted
to learn more about Kevin please raise their hands. I'm predicting
that no hands will go up. And the Mr. DeMartino subplot was lame.
The writers owe the character an apology.

509: "Life in the Past Lane"

An interesting episode for post-IIFY Jane and Daria issues that
founders on one thing. Jane is taken away and replaced by a pod-
person Jane who says and does almost nothing the real Jane would.
Where the hell does *Jane,* she of the infamous dates that consisted
of making fun of everyone she and Tom saw, get off tearing down
Daria for doing the same thing (also ignoring the fact that that
was what she and Daria did most of the time). Daria even says it.
"I thought that's what you liked about me." I do understand that
Jane doesn't have to be consistent, as she is a teenager, but
tying that in with the wardrobe change makes for a very odd
episode.

OTOH, the B plot was fun. Upchuck's magic trick, with accompanying
histrionics from the faculty ("Rigid stupid box of DEATH! Yield!"),
is very funny, and Stacy getting to put Sandi down is great.
So it wasn't a total loss, and even the muddled A plot wasn't
awful.

I'll take "Ill," followed by "Jake of Hearts," "Life in the Past Lane," and "Mart of Darkness," and "Too Cute" way, way, way back.

A bit late, perhaps, but better than not at all.

I never saw "Too Cute" or "Ill", so I can't vote for those episodes. That leaves "Jake of Hearts", "Mart of Darkness", and "Life in the Past Lane".

And my pick? "Life in the Past Lane". I loved seeing Stacy show Sandi up, and for once Stacy was only acting when she cried! As for Jane's actions in the episode, I think she's done things she might otherwise not do for cute guys before -- there was Evan in "See Jane Run" (I hope this is part of the upcoming marathon, as I want to see this episode), and unless my reading of the summary's wrong, she allowed him to talk her into joining the track team. Maybe Tom and Daria were being selfish when they didn't even try to take part in the open-air nostalgia fest, but I don't think they were the only ones at fault here. Nathan definitely didn't make them feel comfortable when the "gang" arrived, and I don't think Daria's the type of girl to mix with people she doesn't feel comfortable with if she can help it. Anyway, the main reason why I prefer this one is because I haven't seen TC or "Ill", and because of the Stacy part of the plot.

As for "Jake of Hearts", it was an okay episode, but not one of my favorites -- in fact, there's not much I remember about the episode. "Mart of Darkness" was definitely not a great episode either, but it struck a chord with me. When I was about 3 years old, a child psychologist was trying to test me -- by asking me to put some raisins in a jar. Instead, I ate the raisins. The child psychologist complained to my father, who basically said, "What did you expect?" Indeed, she should've figured that raisins weren't the best thing to give a 3-year old girl as part of a test -- marbles would've been a better choice, as I seriously doubt I would've tried to eat them. Another interesting aspect of this episode is the fact that Jane definitely is guilty of thinking that Tom ought to know that the gummi bears were for her art project if she didn't even put them near her sculpture -- similar to the flaw in the child psychologist's reasoning when I was a kid.

Therefore, I put "Life in the Past Lane" in first, with "Mart of Darkness" next due to ability to relate to the argument between Jane and Tom, and "Jake of Hearts" last.
