It's that time again, with the 08's. This voting may be tight also, but in a good way, all are good to great episodes, with only probably the 13's as a more quality set. See the link below for the rules to this if you're unsure of anything, and now on with the show.....
108- "Pinch Sitter" Quinn learns to start keeping commitments thanks to a class with Helen's time management consultant, because of a double booking that leads Daria to do Quinn's babysitting job. She's at her shallowest here, only going out with Skylar Feldman because his family has a boat and it's almost summer. Long term plans to break up with him and go with some kid who has a ski house. Full blown S1 Quinn with nothing held back.
Daria, meanwhile, is off to babysit the Gupty children, whose parents are coming to her house for "couples therapy night". These children are model kids, everything in a set way. Daria slowly turns them into free thinking children who don't always listen to what grown-ups have to say. With some creative story telling, and some help from Jane, she gets the job done, and uses the experience as the theme of her history paper.
Good episode, among the top of S1. Personally I wouldn't let a child be brought up like the Gupty kids were pre-Daria. Those are prime targets in schools and in real life for bullying and worse. Daria is seemingly indeed a master of mind-control deprogramming. Quinn played very well in this episode, her storyline set off the main one perfectly.
Lines:
Jake: All those couples, always so freakin' sensitive!
Daria: Don't worry, Dad, you'll find some insensitive couples, I'm sure of it.
Jake: Thanks, kiddo!
Tad: Raisins are nature's candy.
Daria: Then why do they have to cover them with chocolate to sell them at the movies?
Any of Daria and Jane's stories.
Tad & Tricia: I am cool, and that is it, everyone else is full of, full of, full of sh**!
Lester & Lauren: Tad! Tricia!
208- "Gifted" Due to their academic prowess, Daria and Jodie are invited to Grove Hills, a school for intellectually gifted students. On the way there, Jodie's activities impress Helen & Jake. After cutting through much of the crap, Daria meets some of the students and likes them at first, as they seem pretty much like herself, intelligent, sarcastic, not afraid to speak their minds, Jodie also likes them at first. Soon they see how they really act, snobbish, cliquey(sp?), instantly disliking anyone who doesn't meet with their standards. Daria and Jodie have a heart to heart, and both admit there's a part of each of them that would like to be like the other one. We really get our first look into Jodie's mind in this little conversation. Meanwhile, Helen & Jake meet Andrew & Michelle Landon. Jake and Andrew get along all right, but Helen and Michelle can't get along, anything Helen says is interpreted as racist by Michelle, and they never find common ground.
Quinn is forced to spend the evening at Sandi's house because of Daria's trip, and gets kicked out after Sandi's brothers lavish too much attention on Quinn. She goes to Tiffany's and gets thrown out of there, because she finally blew up at Tiffany because she is so insecure about her weight. She ends up then at Stacy's and all is fine there until Stacy starts copying everything Quinn wears, wants to match their hair colors, Quinn gets freaked out by this and heads to the last person she can think of, Jane who reluctantly takes her in for the night, and immediately regrets it when Quinn won't shut up at all most of the night.
Good episode here that deals with Jodie in some depth for the first time. Daria acted as one would figure, she liked the other students of the surface, but then grew tired very quickly of their elitest attitude and told them off. Quinn's escapades into the FC's homes and finally Jane's were very interesting and funny as well. Provided a good counterbalance to the main story.
Lines:
Daria: Should we pull up to the main gate, or just apply for jobs in the stables?
Graham: I'll make sure you'll never set foot in this school again!
Daria: That's a relief. For a minute I was afraid you were going to threaten us.
308- "Lane Miserables" The entire Lane clan returns home, pushing Jane and Trent away into the Morgendorffer home. Even Amanda gets tired of this intrusion and asks Helen for help in getting rid of them, talking about their days, and it works, soon after arguments break out, and everyone is soon off their seperate ways.
At casa Morgendorffer, Helen tests Jake, and finds out he doesn't really know his kids at all. So both ask questions of Daria to Jane in hopes of trying to figure her out better. They both warm up to Jane and Trent as though they were their own children, practicing up on their parenting skills, and liking every minute of it, bonding well with them.
Having Trent so close gets Daria into a worry fit. They talk for awhile, and get to know more about "comparitive literature" seemingly closer than before, though still not more than friends at that point. Then Trent leaves for a date with Monique, Daria sees this and is crushed, calling the crush over. But is on again after Trent admits he'd take her out if she were a bit older.
Excellent episode here. Had everything, the only thing is that it's a major coincedence that all the Lanes come home at once, but if you can overlook that, there's really nothing wrong with this episode. Each Lane had their own quirk which either made them funny, indifferent, or outright strange. Helen and Jake's attempts to get to know Daria better through Jane was hilarious, and Daria running her emotional gamut short of outright crying, made me feel for her, especially in the scene where sh's just looking out the window after Trent and Monique have left.
Lines:
Helen: Drugs?
Jane: Nope, unless you count TV.
Helen: Depressed?
Jane: Nope, just realistic.
Helen: Sex?...... That's too obvious, can I have another?
Jake: Age?
Jane: 17.
Jake: Um, height?
Jane: 5' 2".
Jake: Favorite color?
Both: Black.
Jake: Aw, that's too obvious, can I have another?
Daria: <after the second daydream with Trent put new life into the crush> Damn!
408- "Psycho Therapy" As a test for a partnership Helen and family are sent out to a spa for some psychological evaluations, the firm wants too see if Helen is ready to be partner material. She's so hyped up she's wound even tighter than usual which is amazing considering how wound up she usually is.
Jake gets into his sessions, he flys off into a near rage after the psychologist badgers him about his family.
Quinn puts her psychologist to sleep, literally, with all of her FC stories and other trials and tribulations.
Daria singles out every problem in her family. Quinn is afraid to take a deep look at herself because she may find nothing there, Helen works hard for her family but feels bad about it and tries to overly make up for it. Jake is not really clueless, it's just a smokescreen he uses when he's unsure of something. Her doctor is amazed at how well adjusted she is.
At a role-playing session Jake really hits home with his rendition of Helen, calling her among things a "superwoman", a do it all, who does it to make her feel better about herself, Helen runs out realizing what she appears as to her family, Daria coaxes her out of that feeling, by reassuring her she's at least always trying to do what is right by her family, and all is smoothed over, and the results of the examinations, are acceptable to the partners at the firm, who put Helen on the fast track to a partnership.
Meanwhile, Jane sets up a webcam, which turns out to be a complete, and utter failure, she only gets 8 hits, 3 from Daria, and at least one from a prison, who seemed to like Tom's butt as he wiggled it in front of the webcam before realizing it was there, he didn't appreciate it too much, she got rid of it, the first problems in their relationship begin to appear.
Very good episode all around. We got a glimpse into everyone's minds and learned more about every Morgerdorffer. The role-playing scene had to make you feel for Helen, no matter what you thought of her beforehand, feeling as she's driving the family apart in some ways. The webcam scenes, while not integral to the plot at all provided some needed humor in a somewhat subdued, yet excellent episode.
Lines:
Jake: Beautiful, beautiful, triptophane!
Quinn's past life regression as Cleopatra.
Eric: Come on, let's go out there and kick some wussy ass!
The role playing scene.
Helen: Favorite pastime, turning water into wine?
Daria: I knew I should've gone with the burning bush.
508- "One J at a Time" Quinn decides to try and get a steady boyfriend after seeing how Daria and Tom's relationship is going. Thanks to some "helpful" advice from Daria, she tries going out with Jamie, who makes a valiant effort, but can't last through Quinn's phone marathon. Joey's next, but loses immediately when he can't get tickets for the Guys to Guys concert. Jeffy makes it to dinner where Tom is also invited. Quinn tries to make pet names and talk cemetary plots with Jeffy, as Daria and Tom were jokingly doing beforehand. Jake who has been after a squirrel in the yard for the longest time, lets Tom and Jeffy in on it, who all in a fit of G-rated male bonding, all go out to catch it, then upon doing so, go out and release it into the woods, and then to the nearest track for some go-cart action.
After Jeffy leaves, Quinn believes she isn't mature enough for a steady boyfriend admitting Helen was right in their earlier conversation, which Helen said it takes a lot on maturity to have a steady boyfriend, but not having one doesn't make you immature, Quinn now feeling better, is off to dump Jeffy and resume her life as it was.
Another great episode here. Daria's "advice" to Quinn in some cases was just hilarious. Jake's attempts to get the squirrel were hilarious, even if he was the second coming of Homer Simpson. Daria's insecurity of having Tom over extends more to her father's well being, than of her own, afraid Tom will use his razor-sharp wit and cut Jake down, which he doesn't, but Daria proves she cares more about her father than she is willing to let on.
The line:
See sig. below.
My Favorite: Very, very tough choice here, with 4 of these really high up on my list. The rules say you can vote for 2, and when I thought about it, I almost did. In the end, however, I'll have to give the slight edge here to 408- "Psycho Therapy" The first real Helen-centric episode, the scene with the role playing basically put this one over the top, but just barely.
Followed closely by: "One J at a Time", "Lane Miserables", "Pinch Sitter", and last but by no means a bad episode, "Gifted".
There you are, look for the 09's X-mas night or the night
after.
Have a good night and happy holidays,

Thanks again, A.J...
Like you, I had a hard time with this because even though I've got 1-2 08 favorites, I was reluctant to assign any of them to the cellar because they're *all* good. It's like choosing an Oscar winner.
This episode had a great main plot *and* side plot, what with Quinn's Deena Decker visit.
QUINN: Now I can be beautiful, and popular, and organized!
What really made it were the side characters -- Deena Decker and the Guptys were larger than life, and hilarious.
Other lines I liked:
DARIA: I think he thought I was your au pair. He asked me how I liked America so far.
MATTHEW: Responsible? Dependable? You're never gonna go out with me, are you?
>208- "Gifted" Due to their academic prowess, Daria and Jodie are invited to Grove Hills, a school for intellectually gifted students. On the way there, Jodie's activities impress Helen & Jake. After cutting through much of the crap, Daria meets some of the students and likes them at first, as they seem pretty much like herself, intelligent, sarcastic, not afraid to speak their minds, Jodie also likes them at first. Soon they see how they really act, snobbish, cliquey(sp?),
This was the first episode I watched from Season Two (Summer '98), and I thought, "Wow! They really are moving the characters on this show!" While I was in England, I read the summaries for the first 7 episodes and was largely unimpressed, thinking that they -- especially "Quinn the Brain" -- seemed like rehashes of the S1 plotlines. But this episode hooked me. While "Road Worrier" deserves credit for resurrecting my interest in the show, "Gifted" lifted my interest to full-blown passion.
The first time I saw this, I thought it had too many threads working and was disappointed that Daria never interacted with the Lanes. Upon reviewing, I've ranked it as my favorite of Season Three -- tied with "Through a Lens Darkly." The best parts are Helen and Jane's interaction, Daria's reaction to Trent dating Monique, and Amanda's Zen ramblings.
>408- "Psycho Therapy" As a test for a partnership Helen and family are sent out to a spa for some psychological evaluations, the firm wants too see if Helen is ready to be partner material. She's so hyped up she's wound even tighter than usual which is amazing considering how wound up she usually is.
Like "Gifted," this episode had the effect of kindling, or rather rekindling, my passion for the show. Until then, I was pretty disappointed by Season Four, with the exception of "Partner's Complaint," which itself wasn't a total winner, and ILAP, with its troubling 'shipper foreshadowing. "Psycho Therapy" had one of the most dramatic moments of the series, prior to "Fire!" and DDMD: the part where Helen sits there mortified beyond belief, convinced she's ruining her family. I would have liked to have seen what happened had Daria not caught up to Helen by the car; whether Helen would have gotten into the driver's seat and cried her eyes out. I still think deep down, she's troubled by what Jake said and feels that her family has problems that cannot easily, or ever, be fixed.
The only thing about the ep. that bothers me is that it's destined to be overshadowed by the "love triangle" episodes.
This one was fun, but it bothered me that Quinn could be so shallow after her experience with David. Plus, Helen majorly contradicted herself in her last scene with Quinn.
My votes:
1) Psycho Therapy
2) Gifted
3) Lane Miserables
4) One J at a Time
5) Pinch Sitter

Might be the perfect classic Daria episode? No romance. Much wisecracks. Much Daria and Jane. Quinn is unredeemed at the end of a self-improvement project. No Jake spazzing out, in fact, not much action at all.
I was brought up like a Gupty kid, and got my ass kicked constantly. But Daria is the Jedi Knight/Lamont Cranston of Lawndale, that much is certain.
>208- "Gifted"
>Good episode here that deals with Jodie in some depth for the first time. I shared this handicap with OH, and it wasn't fun. I ended up going to my special school, but it had nothing to do with being intelligent. I often think Daria could have benefitted from some kind of alternative education -- in fact, in one episode, Lawndale High silliness drives her to wonder if homeschooling might have merits.
Wonderful FC/Quinn moments...Ever wonder if this is the group of girls so self-absorbed and skittish that they can't even form one-on-on relationships with another girl friend? That's sad. Great moment where Jane pushes babbling Quinn at the end of an outstretched arm.
>308- "Lane Miserables"

What most of us think of when we think of the Trent Thing. The confirmation of the end. Who didn't feel for Daria? Who hadn't been there? One of the best handlings of the subject of crushes I've ever seen. And the Jane/Parents stuff was killer -- Jane at her deadpan best.
How many fanfics did that last fantasy Trent sequence launch? She just couldn't let it go that easy.
>408- "Psycho Therapy"

The most cited episode when one states that Daria is a little, um, high strung. No, she's fine. Well, I think that was comparison to her family...and not enough time was spent to look into how Daria would feel about (as the MTV Web site puts it) having to touch another human being.
But that's all right...the premise gives me pause -- if this kind of corporate mind-control exists, where they psychoanalyze one's entire family before getting a promotion -- then there ought to be a law.
>508- "One J at a Time"
>Another great episode here. Daria's "advice" to Quinn in some cases was just hilarious. Jake's attempts to get the squirrel were hilarious, even if he was the second coming of Homer Simpson. What Daria, the series, became. More visual gags, more action, more dumb behavior. It was okay, but Quinn's love life doesn't interest me much, and Daria's thinking on what Tom is to her wasn't given a hard enough look.

Psycho Therapy

And yet many schools think they have to make Gupty kids out of kids they think have A.D.D., by using Ritalin, or other mind-altering perscription drugs like tranquilizers, anti-depressants and stimulants. Did they ever consider the possibility that some of the homeless people on the street might've been people who were forced to take these drugs when *they* were kids, and are still suffering from the side-effects whether they're still taking them or not?
>Daria is seemingly indeed a master of mind-control deprogramming. Quinn played very well in this episode, her storyline set off the main one perfectly.
Cool. And Skyler ditched her priorities by breaking up with her before she planned to do the same to him, which proves that Dina Decker's(and others like her)approach to prioritzing don't always work out.

One of the best lines this episode. And I still suspect the Landons overloaded Jodie with all this "volunteer" work to punish her for not going to Grove Hills.

It's not the end of the crush, just the beginning of the end. It also made the Foo Fighters "Everlong" more depressing.

I wonder how long Helen held onto that partnership. I'll bet if Eric had any say in it, she would've got it anyway, just so he could be close to her. I also noticed something else, this episode marks the beginning of the end of specualtion over a future affair between Eric & Helen.

Although i wonder what kind of a threat she was implying when she brought up the color "gym-mat gray," to counter their threat to put her in a room that's "eggshell white."

>
>

No votes yet, but I'm leaning towards a few. I still have to fix my review of #207, because I didn't realize it wasn't finished until after I posted it. Looking forwar to those 09's though.

Favorite to least favorite:
#1 Psycho Therapy. Good episode all the way around, but the two standout scenes which put it at the top of my list are Quinn's "past life regression" and Daria's capsule analysis of the entire family (including herself).
#2 Lanes Miserables. Like A.J. says, all the members of Jane's family were distinct and interesting enough to make me forget about the plot convenience. And it's a good Trent-Daria episode besides (though not quite as good as "Ill" or "Road Worrier").
#3 Pinch Sitter. Full of surreal, subtle moments (garden gnomes, Daria singing "she'll be coming 'round the mountain'") that aren't laugh out loud funny but which set a memorable scene. The situation is unique so the episode is as well. Good stuff.
#4 Gifted. The 'B' plot is great, plus Jodie gets some of her best lines ever. Not much to dislike except for the element of predictability. The gifted school's students turn out pretty much like you imagine they have to in order for the episode to resolve itself.
#5 One 'J' at a Time. Another episode I hate to put at the bottom of any list. Maybe the first episode to make Tom into a truely likable character (though "I Loathe a Parade" came fleetingly close). Only problems: The squirrel hunt as some kind of bonding adventure between Jake and Tom is a bit much, and the J's are inherently not very interesting.

Favorite: Pinch Sitter - An almost-real situation handled in an inimitable Daria style.
Runners-Up
Lane Miserables - Lotsa Lanes, but Daria's reactions to the Trent thing and Jane's scenes with the Morgendorffers were great.
Gifted - Why isn't Daria in an academic situation at her own level? This is why.
Psycho Therapy - The Helen and Daria heart to heart was great, as was the role playing.
OJAAT - Almost painful to watch.

>108- "Pinch Sitter"
The first of the Season One episodes to be a contender for the top spot. It had Daria babysitting the Gupty children, Quinn getting dumped for pre-planning a dumping, and Daria and Jane and their Fractured Fairy Tales. Besides, who could forget the last song?
>208- "Gifted"
Another fun one, but, for me, the "B" plot outweighed the "A" plot. Daria and Jodie and their experiences at Grove Hills were a blast, but I really enjoyed Quinn and her "foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests" experience.
>308- "Lane Miserables"
The best, maybe the best overall. The wandering Lanes all return home at once, causing the overflow (Jane, and later Trent) to drift to the Morgendorffers, where they become the son and daughter Jake and Helen never had. Deals with so many issues it's hard to single out just one. Oh, yeah, maybe Quinn's "Doesn't anybody want to hear what ungodly hour I got in?" line.
>408- "Psycho Therapy"
Probably the weakest, but anything that had "JaneCam" couldn't be all bad. See Jane Floss!
>508- "One J at a Time"
No, maybe this was the weakest. Well, it did have Jake, Tom, and Jeffy experiencing male bondage---bonding!
As for the totals:
1. 308 "Lane Miserables"
2. 108 "Pinch Sitter"
3. 208 "Gifted"
4. 408 "Psycho Therapy"
5. 508 "One J at a Time"
Picking the last place finisher was much harder than picking first place this time around...

#8: Pinch Sitter, Gifted, Lane Miserables, Psycho Therapy, One J at a Time
WINNER: #308, Lane Miserables
This episode is practically required watching for the Daria fan. We meet all the wandering Lanes, we get plenty of Daria + Trent, and there isn’t a moment that’s not a kick to watch.

Winner: Psycho Therapy. If youi don't like this one, you're nuts. (Not really, but it's damn good.)
Then 3-way tie for Pinch Sitter, Gifted, Lane Miz. ("Take--her--now" had me rolling)
Bottom of the bunch: One J at a Time. Not necessarily a bad episode, but not as good as the rest of these.

I'm voting for "Psycho Therapy." Why? We get to hear Daria's descriptions of what's wrong with her family. Helen as good as admits she likes Daria better than Quinn. We find out what Jake really thinks of Helen. Quinn giving fashion advice to Mrs. Johansen was priceless. "Jane-cam" was funny as hell, between Jane herself, Trent scratching his butt, and Tom's letters from the inmates. (Daria saw both Trent and Tom on Jane-cam, then chose Tom. Coincidence? You decide.)
And in a suprise twist, we find out the firm didn't send Helen to the retreat to make sure she's a model wife and mother even when she's a fulltime lawyer -- they were actually glad to see that she devotes more energy to her job than to her family. Good-bye double standard, hello partnership. Maybe this will show up in the movie.
Overall, this episode more than makes up for Jake's obsession with milk -- the only bad point of the episode.
The other 08s are all excellent episodes, too. If "Psycho Therapy" is my pick for the perfect season, "Lane Miz" and "Pinch Sitter" deserve to be in the running for a wildcard slot.

Remember them for later. The run-off vote for the "wildcards" will be right after the regular voting closes.
Also remember you can pick up to 3 episodes that failed to win any group. The top 2 vote getters, possibly 3 if there's a tie, will be put into the second round of voting to start on Sun. 1/13/02.

108 - gotta love child warping! Jane's handy with TV blockers. (And that's my best recollection, folks...)
208 - haven't seen it, but would love to.
308 - wandering Lanes are a plus. Monique gets a second helping of bad press (or whatever), but I don't think she's nearly as bad as some people do.
408 - "Oh, Caesar, you big idiot, DO something!"
508 - could not stop laughing after this ep's original run. It's that male bonding thing... heh.
best - Lane Miz/Psycho Therapy tie
runners up: Pinch Sitter, One J
only out because I haven't seen it: Gifted

Good, strong string of eps here. My favorites:
1 - "Psycho Therapy" - The definitive "What makes the Morgendorffers tick?" episode. And yes, I think Daria's looking at Tom's hinny... ;D
2 - "Gifted" - Heh--I wonder if Graham and his ilk are on the same level as Kevin, in a way? Call them the "Anti-Kevin"...
3 - "Pinch Sitter" - This is a "Sneaky Daria (and Jane)" ep, where Daria (actually) does subtle and slick things to get the wished-for end result, in this case, the Gupty children. Some other eps in this group are "This Year's Model" & "Fat Like Me".
4 - "Lane Miserables" - Hm--which is the better 'shipper ep with Daria/Trent? Is this better than "Road Worrior", "Ill", or "Pierce Me"? Could be an interesting argument in itself...
5 - "One J At A Time" - Is it Carter County, or Lawndale County, now? Yet *another* inconsistant misnomer in the show, on par with Zen/Zon, and Cranberry Commons/Lawndale Mall. Basically, the end was the best on this ep. Whoop, there it *was*...
Thanks.

Unfortunately, no time for fun here. I'll just give my vote and head out.
#508 One J at a Time
Family dinners with boyfriends can be embarassing. At least Ryan (my ex) and Todd (my sister's boy) never ran off with my dad during a dinner. Come to think of it, my dad usually wasn't there. Huh. In any case, more proof that Daria and Quinn are a lot alike ("Oh look, shoestring potatoes.") underneath it all, and that Quinn does care what Daria has to say.
I could be doing something productive now, but why would I want to do that?

This _is_ a tough one... (i haven't voted in the others yet) I wound up going by season order, with 1-4 too close to call really.
1. Pinch Sitter - Nice bit of mind control deprogramming, although it didn't quite stick (referencing #406)
2. Gifted - Thank goodness for standardized tests - so that you know who your real friends are. And other such gems.
3. Lane Miserables - It was cool to meet the Lanes, and Daria's expression at the end of act 2 is just priceless... in a bittersweet way.
4. Psycho Therapy - Funny and poignant.
5. One J at a Time - IMO the weakest of the bunch, especially since it dosen't really go forth from where IIFY took Quinn.

>
>

>
>

>
>
>

Well, I haven't seen #208, "Gifted", but I have seen the other 4 candidates, so without further ado, here are my views of each episode, beginning with #108.
"Pinch Sitter" was definitely a great episode. Daria was convinced by Quinn to babysit for the Gupty kids, and it turned out to be Daria's worst nightmare -- nauseatingly sweet kids, made that way by parents who had to be even more nauseatingly sweet than the kids were (hey, the parents had more time to develop that overly sweet style). Fortunately, when Daria called in Jane, Jane took charage and soon they made the kids more rebellious & less sweet. And best of all, Daria was able to use the experience for a paper in DeMartino's class! Too bad the "brainwashing" wore off by the time of "I Loathe a Parade".
"Lane Miserables" was even better. Here we see the rest of the Lane family, and they definitely make the Morgendoffers seem less dysfuctional. I'm willing to bet Amanda & Vincent Lane's lassiez-faire parenting style is indirectly responsible for the difficulties the oldest Lane children faced. Children need attention & boundaries, and if they don't get either, they wind up like the oldest Lane children. Also, we see the first big blow to Daria's idealized view of Trent, or the first big blow to "the Crush", as so many people call it. Trent's a nice guy, but he's too much of a slacker, and Daria begins to see it clearly for the first time. However, Eichler's realistic enough to realize that crushes aren't destroyed overnight, so he allows the Crush to return -- but it will never be the same again.
"Psycho Therapy" is also a fine episode. We see the Morgendoffers learning quite a bit about themselves -- as much as they can, that is. We also see that Daria has a good understanding of all the flaws of her family, herself included. And then we see more problems with Jane & Tom. In this & the other two episodes which focus on Jane & Tom's misunderstandings (ILAP & "Mart of Darkness"), we see that the main reason for these problems is that Jane seems to make the mistake of thinking that Tom is going to know things that he can't possibly know (more on that when I do my remarks on MOD).
"One J at a Time" is a pretty good episode, actually. We see that Quinn's maturing enough that now she's beginning to want to be mature, and that fear of being immature is what leads her to try to get a steady boyfriend. Her problem here is that she doesn't really know how to keep a steady relationship, quite possibly because she's just not ready for a steady relationship. Daria has a different problem -- Helen wants Daria to invite Tom over for supper, but Daria's understandably afraid that Jake will make a fool out of himself. However, Daria's fears prove to be less founded than she might've thought, as Jake is able to bond with both Tom & Jeffy. Also, as someone who's raced on go-kart tracks, I thought the final sequence with the go-karts was cool.
My pick would be "Lane Miserables", with "Psycho Therapy" right behind. Then would come "Pinch Sitter" and right behind it, "One J at a Time".

108: "Pinch Sitter"
Daria babysits. Oh, the humanity.
Some very fun stuff in this episode. Quinn getting blown off
by someone even smarmier and more shallow than she is was amusing,
though the Deena Decker stuff was a bit overdone. Daria's Freudian
slip when confronted with the House of Suburban Sweetness was
great:
"Hi, Mrs. Kewpie, I mean Gupty."
Jane and Daria's stories were fun ("And the dish ran away with the
spoon, but Hawaii was the only state that recognized their marriage
as legal.") as was Jane's reaction to Daria's pigtails ("Hail, Pippi
Longstocking). Tad Gupty had the episode's second best moment:
"Kick 'em to the curb, girlfriend."
with the best going to the revised self-esteem song Tad and Tricia
sing at the end. "I am cool and that is it and everyone else is
full of..."
208: "Gifted"
The first and best of the Daria/Jodie episodes (Partner's Complaint
and Prize Fighters are the others). Daria and Jodie each realize
they have something the other one needs to become a more complete
person. In between, they take the piss out of some believably
arrogant private school twits, while Helen offends Jodie's mother
by drawing breath and Jodie's dad and Jake sort-of bond (which was a bit of a missed opportunity--having Andrew and Jake be friends while
Michelle and Helen hated each other might have been fun; it worked
on _Malcolm in the Middle_).
Quinn's wanderings are amusing and give us a really good idea how
screwed up the fashion club's dynamic really is: Quinn alternately
regards Sandi as an enemy, Tiffany as contemptible, and Stacy as more
than a little scary. This is of course as nothing to how Jane and
Trent regard Quinn ("Take... her... now.") ("Oh, right. Daria's
sister.")
An interesting and entertaining episode all around.
308: "Lane Miserable"
The wandering Lanes return and all hell breaks loose. The writers
enjoyed playing with expectations here. One would think that Penny
would be more the cliche laid back hippie "save the world" chick,
given that she has rejected America's culture to sell knicknacks in
the Third World. Instead she's a no-nonsense Ugly American: pushy,
demanding, and contemptuous of the places she travels through. One
would think that she's speak better Spanish after ten years.
Wind, too, isn't what you expect. Twice divorced already with legal
problems out the wazoo because of it, you'd expect a smooth talking
Lothario, but what you get is the sort of wishy-washy New Age mook
that Mike Binkley could have grown up to be. Summer is a cipher, while Vincent and Amanda do live up to their reputation as hands-off
parents. I love Amanda's butterfly speech, both the first time with
Jane, and the second time where she cracks up and begs Helen to get
her her house back. Trent's reaction to Vincent's attempt to counsel
Wind ("Trent, you be the flirtacious girl at the checkout counter"
"Uh, I gotta go sharpen my guitar pick") is also amusing.
I suppose the most significant moment of LM is that we find out that
Daria's interest in Trent *is* in some measure reciprocated. He
thinks enough of her that he wishes she were a few years older.
Coming on the heels of the fantasy that she used to try to rid
herself of The Crush, it does lead one to wonder whether Trent is
really interested in Daria, totally clueless and trying to be nice, or casually cruel.
Some other questions:
Do Helen and Amanda know each other solely because their daughters
are friends or have they bonded more deeply?
Is Jake really that clueless or was his conversation with Helen part
of a short term strategy to get her to go away so he could watch the
game?
Why didn't one of the other Lanes barbeque Penny's freaking parrot?
Anyway, a really fun episode that advances the characters, but I'm
going to shut up or I'll never finish.
408: "Psycho Therapy"
The family Morgendorffer undergoes group therapy. Disaster, of
course, ensues. Daria surprises everyone, including her doctor,
the viewers, and, I suspect, herself by being incredibly well-
adjusted. Quinn surprises no one by being totally shallow and
self-absorbed (but the past-life regression was great: "Caesar,
you big dope!"). Helen and Jake really have it out.
The characterization is great and Helen and Jake really hit
home. Jane Cam is cute as a throwaway gag and as part of the
buildup to "The Triangle," because it's Jane and Tom's first on-
screen fight. It's kind of a shame that they back off, though.
I'm not sure how much it would have helped Daria and Quinn, but
Helen and Jake likely could have done themselves a lot of good
if they'd kept up with the stuff they learned about each other,
instead of backing away from it. ("Helen, it was the milk talking.")
Still, everyone got a chance to be funny and insightful, and it was
a really good episode, overall. One of the best of season four.
508: "One J at a Time"
Slight, but entertainng. The important things in this ep for me are
that the sibling war is becoming decidedly one-sided. It's pretty
clear that Quinn is coming to admire Daria in certain ways, hence
her attempts to imitate Daria by getting a steady BF. Daria, OTOH,
is entertainingly cruel to her sister (funeral plots? Snookles?).
And, yes, deep down, underneath it all, Tom is a guy. Not just a
male, but a guy, who likes catching squirrels and driving go karts.
Nothing wrong with that, though Daria might be unpleasantly surprised.
Still, it's a really funny episode.
Another group where I'd take 'em all over the fives or the sevens,
but I think I'll go:
"Lane Miserable"
"Psycho Therapy"
"Gifted"
"Pinch Sitter"
"One J at a Time"
The differences aren't that great, though, as they're all good eps.
