Today I bring you the 05 episodes. I warn you now, probably the worst of the groups, the voting should be close here, so go on if you dare....
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
<AJ takes his medication>
Much better!
Remember you can always go back and pick out your favorites for the 01's 02's 03's and 04's anytime up until 3 days after the 13's are posted, now on with the show.
105- "Malled" The economics class goes on a school field trip to the "Mall of the Millenium". After failing to convince her parents to let her go, Quinn skips school and goes with the FC, Daria gets sick on the way up and vomits in the malls parking lot, thanks to cheap perfume and Kevin and Brittany's amourous exploits.
Once there, the class meets with the mall executives, who try to use them as market research. Once found out, they make a hasty retreat and eventually offer the entire class a $20. coupon, everyone, surprisingly including Jodie take the coupons, once again flushing Daria's optimism about her idealistic classmates straight down the tubes.
After this the class gets an assignment to check out various aspects of the mall and report back to Mrs. Bennett. While doing so, Daria catches Quinn, makes her and "Guy" takes them home, and do her chores for a whole month, while there waiting for her ride, Daria becomes the 10,000th customer of the Doo-Dad store and ends up with a lot of "crappy, useless junk". Not surprisingly when Helen offers to let them go, neither of the girls is too anxious.
This is a good episode, not great, but good. Some lines:
Kevin's Bottles of beer on the wall song, then his reaction to Brittany's comments.
Mrs. Bennett: Is that green or magenta? Jane you're an artist.
Jane: It's cranapple.
Mrs. Bennett: But you're in an enclosed space now.
Daria: And I'm really itchy?
Jane: These hives are really bad, Mrs. Bennett, I've seen them, they drip with pus. <class appears sick> Just trying to help.
Pretty tame by later episodes adventures but one seeing Daria for the first time with this episode might wonder why a principal would allow a field trip to a mall. As we found out in later episodes, Ms Li would allow anything that would net her some money, she probably got the mall to give her something in return somehow.
205- "That Was Then, This is Dumb" Helen and Jake's old hippie friends, Willow and Coyote Yeager come by for their first visit in 25 years. To avoid them, Daria joins Jane, Trent and Jesse to sell old records at a flea market.
Helen and Jake begin to question what brought them to where they are now after seeing their old friends, and try to make an effort, though a weak one to try to return to their hippie roots, just as they're getting back into the swing a bit, the Yeagers confess they're not all that crazy about the hippie lifestyle as well, always willing to help, or just anxious to return to their pre visit life, Helen and Jake both offer helpful advice and products to help the Yeagers catch up with the times. Throughout this whole time Quinn is trying to impress the Yeagers son, Ethan with very little success, as though Ethan seems to be a hippie version of Daria.
Daria's adventures don't go well either. First she's embarassed by getting caught by Trent in the old nightgown, she runs into Upchuck, when she gets back, Upchuck has left the booth and the records have all been stolen. Jane lets Jesse know about April 1, 2007, and he seems very impressed <cool> that ends any little thing they may have possibly had.
On the plus side for Daria, though she didn't see it, Trent let loose with a smile after hearing Daria's words of "concern" for him, she got to spend time alone with him, and thanks to Quinn she had some nice blackmail for her parents by the end of the day, so a pretty so-so day. Also a pretty so-so episode. I honesly can't put a finger on what exactly I'm not crazy about with this episode, I've just never really liked it too much. Some lines:
Coyote: Hey, man you've become kind of.....aggressive.
Jake: Have not!
Willow: It's the meat.....
Jake: <more irate> Is Not!
Jane: Why are you staring at my brother?
Daria: Selfless concern? I think he's stopped breathing.
Jane: Nah, he's entered a dormant stage, in about 10 years he'll awake and emerge as a butterfly..... I guess you're going to wait. <Trent smiles>
Jane: ...and then Jesse, the objects will come to life and plot their takeover of civilization, April 1, 2007, that's the day they make their move....
Jesse: <what else does he say?> Cool. <slurps soda>
305- "The Lost Girls" Unbeknownst to Daria, Mr. O'neill enters one of her essays into a magazine contest, winning a day with the head of that magazine, Val, yes THE Val, as in Val, a thirty something wannabe teenager. Daria, as we all know was absolutely thrilled to spend the day with her. :-) Quinn is obviously thrilled beyond belief, but her repeated attempts to pitch her story idea keep getting derailed. Jane keeps Daria going through this by trying to weasel a trip to NY City out of the deal. Eventually Daria tells Val off when she can find the rare time that Val isn't talking, and gets an unfavorable article in Val magazine because of it.
This episode sent a positive message about the marketing stratagies corporate America uses on kids but especially teen girls. Anorexia, Bulimia, ostracizion, all caused if you aren't up to date with the latest trends in clothes, music, etc. A very good message to send and that makes this a good episode.
Val's personality, however, make this episode hard to watch, and her voice makes me turn down the sound, it's so annoying. So any message sent through this episode was lost to me by the most annoying voice of all time.
Some lines:
Val's rant about being dumped, her only good lines.
Quinn: Yes, grunge was wrong, but you can't blame the whole state.
Daria: Welcome to Lawndale, where style meets substance and says see ya.
Jodie: Everybody's gonna know that's you, Daria.
Daria: Hey, I'm jiggy with it.
405- "The F Word" O'neill comes up with a class assignment to fail at something on purpose, so you'll know failing can be used for growth, and isn't all bad.
Daria tries to get Quinn grounded so she can't attend a fashion extravaganza, but fails to do so, Jane actually succeeds at becoming conventional, teddy bear backpack and all. Jodie tries to get the summer off, HA! Mack tries to teach Kevin something HA! HA! HA! Brittany tries becoming unpopular and succeeds.
Most of these assignments have ruined his students lives in some way causing O'neill to give up on himself, causing Daria and Jane to "cheer him up" saying he failed, so now learn from it, O'neill feels much better and will do anything for Daria in return, so he goes with Quinn to her fashion outing to monitor her spending, instead of Daria.
I failed to see the point of this episode, so do I pass the assignment?
Still a couple of good moments:
Jane's first transformation scene, her fantasy before the cheerleading tryout, and the tryout itself: Cheer, cheer, cheer, yell, yell, yell, who cares who wins, we're all going to hell!
Brittany's attempts to sound smart while "doing her assignment"
Daria: Damn hydrocephallic skull replica.
Jake: EWWW!!!!!!!!!
505- "The Story of D" After a prompting by Jane to show a story to Tom, Daria gets prodded into submitting the story to a magazine called Musings, that Tom suggested. As she does so, the whole school finds out, thanks again to Mr. O'neill, and everyone congratulates her, even though she doesn't even know if the story will get published. When she finds out it was rejected, she immediately takes it out on Tom, who was doing nothing more than trying to be supportive by offering other options to get it published, thus straining their relationship again. After a run-in with Jake of all people, who was stuck on a thing with showtunes, she realizes what Tom was trying to tell her all along, just because it was rejected once, by one editor doesn't mean someone else won't like it. or that her writing needs to be a bit more polished, as Jake's old showtune wasn't, showing her it was alright. This would've made a better F word episode. After the "eating crow" section of their conversation, Daria and Tom share a kiss, which Helen walks in a just the right time for, which she was trying to prevent the entire episode.
Meanwhile, to attempt something worthwhile, and get a plaque, the FC tries to publish their own newsletter, offering what else, fashion advice, which goes fine except for 2 things, all of their predictions about the upcoming season were wrong, forcing a recall, leading to #2 since only guys apparently bought it, they were never read by anyone. So the FC designs their own plaque and places it by the girls room mirror.
A good premise with focusing on Daria's writing. You could really feel it when she got that rejection notice. The episode went down from there, the blaming and mistrusting of Tom, is starting to get old at this point, and Daria seems as she is almost like a petulant child the way she treats Tom, she still seems to be subconciously sabotaging the relationship, a theme played on too heavily in S5.
Some lines:
Jane: It's about a flesh-eating virus, how is that intimate?
Daria: You'd think it was pretty intimate if it were eating your flesh.
Jake's song:
Were the guys they call cadets
were here to save our nation,
fighting stinky foriegners
right after graduation.
and more, I forget the rest right now.
Stacy: Boy, this volunteering stuff is hard.
Tiffany: Yeah, someone should really pay us for this.
Quinn: We'll just do what we do best.
Sandi: Quinn, no one is going to pay us to eat carrot sticks.
Again an average episode.
My favorite: A very close call here between 105 and 505, mostly because all of the episodes of this group are average at best and awful at worst.
That being said I'd have to give the slight(very slight) edge to 105- Malled. It doesn't stand out here, but is marginally better than the rest of this group, IMO.
Followed by "The Story of D", "The F Word", "That Was Then, This is Dumb", and lastly, "The Lost Girls"
To borrow a line from a certain fanfic author here, slightly paraphrased:
You are now leaving episode HELL, aren't you glad you survived?

Has that classic feel...the vomiting is a biiiig plus -- back in those, dare I say, punkrock days of throwing anything against the wall to see what sticks...we're lucky it didn't turn into The Tiffany Show.

This one gets bonus "Mock the Boomers" points...makes the old hippy in me cringe. Excellent effect! A low-key episode...watching this, one can't imagine "Whomp! There it is!" or Ms. Li's Dance of the Fireaxe happening in Daria...and then there's DTAH.

Too canny a parody. Thank jah this breed is nearly extinct, what with ad page sales falling.

The episode that solidified my hatred of O'Neill. Rated U for useless. And they panned past all of the crazy crap in O'Neill's apartment to fast.

The first of the too-long series of "Gurz v. BoÏs" episodes. I could hear this without the TV on, WTF?
Remember when she pushed the door in her face...oh, don't get me started. Thank GOD for Fat like Me, Lucky Strike and Boxing Daria, or else Season 5 would be tough to watch.

Given the choice, I'd rather watch Malled. But then I'd go find a tape of TWTTID.
So:

The Story of D
The Lost Girls

>Today I bring you the 05 episodes. I warn you now, probably the worst of the groups, the voting should be close here, so go on if you dare....
Mediocre episodes... NOOOOOOOO!
This had some good satire, but its plot was so dull that when I first watched it, I lost interest in "Daria" and didn't regain it until "Road Worrier."
>205- "That Was Then, This is Dumb" Helen and Jake's old hippie friends, Willow and Coyote Yeager come by for their first visit in 25 years. To avoid them, Daria joins Jane, Trent and Jesse to sell old records at a flea market.
I think the brief flashback to Helen and Jake's past is what makes this episode worthwhile. Everything else is pretty lame.
I really liked this one through the first act, but it wore down in the second and third. It would have been better if Daria had had to actually *do* something for or to Val, instead of following her around, growing more and more frustrated. Daria's bored tone throughout this episode reflects our feelings.
>405- "The F Word" O'neill comes up with a class assignment to fail at something on purpose, so you'll know failing can be used for growth, and isn't all bad.
This one was interesting, but too messy. A promising Jane plotline just never got the space it deserved, and too much space was devoted to Kevin and Brittany's love life, which was a rehash of the conflict in ATGIL.
>505- "The Story of D" After a prompting by Jane to show a story to Tom, Daria gets prodded into submitting the story to a magazine called Musings, that Tom suggested.
This felt like the episode with the best bits to me, between the long-overdue "Daria tries to publish something" plotline, Jake's pathetic attempt to write a song, and Helen's paranoia about Daria and Tom's relationship. The F.C. plotline was decent, too, if kind of dull.
So my choices are:
1) "The Story of D"
2) "The Lost Girls"
3) "The 'F' Word"
4) "That Was Then, This is Dumb"
5) "Malled"
And for the first and second episodes:
WINNER: "Through a Lens Darkly," "The Invitation"
LOSER: "Fizz Ed," "The Old and the Beautiful"

Achhhh! I hate it when I haven't seen all the episodes. Don't have time for a long, drawn out evaluation (darn finals ruin all my fun; college would be wonderful if it weren't for the classes).
Come to think of it, I'm having a hard time deciding from a group this wonderful (snicker) so I'll be back after my exams and Survivor (8pm CST THURS 12-13). If I don't show up, send in the emergency squad or a box of tissues....
I could be doing something productive now, but why would I want to do that?

Here's my take:
"Malled":
Bland. I'm not real fond of episodes with the original Brittany and FC voices, either. (Of course, I think I've only seen a couple of them.)
"TWTTiD":
One of the 12 episodes I still haven't seen.
"The Lost Girls":
The first non-season one ep I saw. I'd only seen 2 1/2 episodes previous to that. Okay episode. I rather enjoyed bits and pieces of it.
"F Word":
I LOVE Jane's transformation, even if the fact that she considered staying conventional was a bit stupid. Nothing beats her cheer, and her reaction when she saw O'Neill's apartment. Good Jane. Me like Jane.
Unlike some people, I don't find Kevin and Brittany annoying, and Mr. O'Neill doesn't bother me most of the time. (Although I could see how they would irk some people.) For me, there are two parts to characters like K&B:
1. They remind you of someone you know
2. They seem so cartoonish that you know noone could ever seriously be like that
I would have liked to see a bit of maturity in them, though, since we get to see it in many of the other characters.
"Sappy Anniversary with a Manuscript"...I mean "The Story of D":
Think my title says most of it. Would have been better if we hadn't just seen the same plot 3 episodes ago.
Heh....I'm supposed to be leaving for my exam right now, so here's an ETE 335 flashback for me: Ranking is an appraisal question, which is at the second level of thinking....
1. tFW
2. tLG
3. M
4. SoD
abstension: TwTTiD, until I see it....
Off to go flunk a social studies methods final! :o)
I could be doing something productive now, but why would I want to do that?

Hmmm, a lot of lackluster episodes in this batch. They're not all that bad, just not real lustrous.
I'd have to go with TWTTID as the best, for the Helen & Jake flashbacks, and the Daria and Trent scenes.
Then I think TFW for Jane's scenes and soul-searching, TLG for Daria's firm opinion of Val, "Malled" for an actual school episode that unfortunately shows Daria in a rather pathetic light, and finally TSOD, which removed Daria's brain from her head.

>105- "Malled" >
Well, it was okay, but a bit lower-key than I would've thought the Mall of the Millennium would bring out in Daria and Jane. But I liked the encounter between Daria and Quinn...
(I've been to the Mall of America, by the way. Three times, or was it four? Either way, I enjoyed it.)
>205- "That Was Then, This is Dumb" >>
I thought it was funny all around. I liked the scenes where Jake and Helen worry over losing their values, then wind up corrupting Willow and Coyote. I liked the foursome's foray into the world of swap meets and drive-in sales. A winner.
(I've marked April 1st, 2007 on my calender.)
>305- "The Lost Girls"
I thought this one was a lot funnier than most people apparently did. I liked Daria being sarcastic and Val just not getting it. I liked Jane's prompting for a trip to New York. I liked Daria's cracks about Val's age.
(Last time I bought booze, I was carded. I was thirty nine at the time.)
>405- "The F Word"
I liked it. A motivational class assignment that wound up depressing people. (I wonder to this day how Upchuck wound up depressed from it.) Several shattered personalities, too, including Mr. O'Neill, who deserved it.
Best scene overall: The first sight of Mr. O'Neill's apartment, and Jane's reaction to it.
(Daria did mispronounce "hydrocephalic.")
>505- "The Story of D"
Somewhat weaker---not a real clunker---largely about motivation. Someone of Daria's age and experience---and attitude---shouldn't have been so bummed out by her story's fate.
The Fashion Club subplot was a lot of fun, though. It does say that they're so insecure about their opinions that they bend when confronted by "authority." (i. e. "Waif" magazine.)
(I must've received a hundred rejections by the time I was Daria's age. Right now, a long time further on, I realize they were doing me a favor. The stuff I was writing then was just awful.)
So overall:
1: The "F" Word
2: (tie) "That Was Then, This Is Dumb" and "The Lost Girls"
3: "Malled"
4. "The Story of 'D'"
There's not much gap between them; they're all of high quality, and you've already gone by my one real clunker (which, even though, had its moments.)

Jane and Daria in the hairstylists place, which they thought
was for art supplies because Jane had a coupon for "Scissors
Shack," was funny. Not much else was.
205: "That Was Then, This is Dumb"
I like this episode. Willow and Coyote are entertaining
cliches and Jake once again has several classic moments.
"These veggie things never fill me up. Who's up for a burger?"
After getting glares from Helen and the Yeagers:
"It's the circle of life, Helen."
The flea market plot isn't quite as entertaining but it's still
fun, and the shipper action is well done.
305: "The Lost Girls"
Bleah. Bleah. Bleah. And again I say Bleah.
It's not a terrible episode, I suppose, and Daria has some
good lines.
"Paris. Milan. New York. Lawndale."
And as AJ said, there's a very positive message. Val is just
unwatchable, though. I suppose that means they've done a good
job, but she's just too annoying to bear.
405: "The F Word"
Multiple bleahs more than "The Lost Girls." "The F Word" might
be the worst episode in the entire run of the show. The plot
is dippy (though I liked O'Neill's reaction as compared to
everyone else's at the seminar), and it's just not very funny.
Though Trent has a good line. When Jane comes down in her
"conventional" outfit to meet Tom, Trent says,
"Don't abandon her man. She needs you."
Gotta go. Bye.
505: "The Story of D"
The A plot leaves something to be desired in the second half
of the episode. Daria and the story works, right up until she
gets the rejection letter, but the subsequent fight with Tom
and making up feels forced. They did the same thing with "Sappy
Anniversary," wherein other characters acting silly (in this
case, Jake) convince OH that she's acting silly. OTOH, I love
the way she apologizes to Tom. ("I'm cooking up a nice juicy
crow..."). And Daria and Tom discussing the merits of submitting
the story is great:
Tom: Why don't you send it to them?
Daria: The rejection, indignation, and lasting humiliation.
Tom: How about the success, stardom, and eventual alcoholism?
The thing I loved about this ep. was the B plot, though. The
Fashion Club's attempts to do good, culminating in the newsletter
and it's retraction are hysterical, and Sandi's speech as they
dedicate the plaque to themselves is brilliant.
Sandi: ...as my grandmother says whenever she tries to give me
some horrible peasant blouse from, like, the Haight-Ashtray
period of American history, it's the thought that counts.
Rankings: "The Story of D," "That Was Then, This is Dumb,"
"Malled," "The Lost Girls," and trailing behind like a
three-legged dog after an ambulance, "The F Word."

I didn't think Daria fet she had any idealistic classmates other than Jodie and Jane.

>205- "That Was Then, This is Dumb" Helen and Jake's old hippie friends, Willow and Coyote Yeager come by for their first visit in 25 years. To avoid them, Daria joins Jane, Trent and Jesse to sell old records at a flea market.

Throughout this whole time Quinn is trying to impress the Yeagers son, Ethan with very little success, as though Ethan seems to be a hippie version of Daria.
>
>Daria's adventures don't go well either.

And I would be too, which is why I liked the 1981 ABC Afterschool Special "The Wave." It reinforced my feelings about fitting in for the sake of fitting in. Daria didn't care if that article made her look bad in the eyes of youth culture, or anybody else for that matter.

>
>

O'Neill thought that teaching method he learned about at the conference would uncover some hidden intelligence buried within his less than promising students, but all it did was make the whole class miserable. Lost of people believe this is true in real life. It also set up one of the storylines for IIFY, specifically involving Jodie.

The best part of the whole episode.
>Brittany's attempts to sound smart while "doing her assignment"
>
The rest of the cheerleaders didn't sound too smart either when they complained about her talking about "the starving referees, and stuff." But you know what? I really felt bad for the whole class, including Kevin, Brittany and Mr. O'Neill. I even got the feeling Jodie would've cried like Brittany, if she didn't have Mack's arms to hold her. And leave it to Kevin to soothe his girlfrind's pain;
Kevin: "Hey! I'm not just a loser, I'm DATING a loser."
Brittany(cries louder).
Did you notice the biggest heroes of this episode were Jodie & Mack, and they became just as depressed as everyone else about this assignment, except Daria and maybe Jane?
>
>
>
Tiffany cries, a first.
>
I'm telling you, that scene where she berates Tom over encouraging her to send the article because she assumes he was setting her up to fail, was eerily similar to Wraith's "Something Happened," fanfic.
>Some lines:
>
>Jane: It's about a flesh-eating virus, how is that intimate?
>
>Daria: You'd think it was pretty intimate if it were eating your flesh.
>
>
Daria: "How's this-- During the day, I'm an mild-mannered high school student, but at night, I fight crime in a stretchy-stretchy costume."
...or something like that.
>
>
>
>
I'd have to put "The Story of D" towards the top of the list myself, in spite of the spat between Daria & Tom. I've always thought she'd be above something like this, even when she had a crush on Trent. But my ratings(and they are marginal):
1)The Story of 'D'(for Daria's writing)
2)That was Then, This is Dumb(for the shipper in me)
3)The 'F' Word(because I found it touching)
4)The Lost Girls(I like the idea of Daria telling her off in New York much better)
5)Malled(just for the heck of it)
I left a lot of stuff on, and didn't write everything I needed to here, but then I'm kind of tired and disoriented right now. I may change my vote(s) later.

I think I vaguely remember parts of "That Was Then..." but have not, to my memory, seen the whole thing. (Something similar is afoot in my subconcious in regards to a line from "Write Where it Hurts.") Missed "The Lost Girls" too.
Out of what I've seen, then:
Best: The F Word
I'm more likely to rewatch it than the other two.
Worst: Is there a worst? They all seem to be rather sucky...

#1 (winner) "Malled"
Well-paced and alot of fun, as much for the group's journey as for the mall scenes themselves. An improbable plot with nothing too deep going on -- it's the characters that carry this one. One of the episodes that first got me hooked. Nothing but fond memories here.
#2 "The F Word"
Among other things it was great fun to watch Jane paying homage to her unconventionality by trying to fail at fitting in. The wrap-up with O'Neil seems trite, but not a big deal. Here we have another goofy premise that redeems itself by setting up some good situational comedy.
#3 "That was Then, This is Dumb"
The sour note here was Jesse's vacuousness. I'd liked to have seen something a bit more creative done with this character than just the catch-phrase "cool". This guy makes Beavis look suave. Otherwise, a decent episode.
#4 "The Lost Girls"
Yes, Val is an excessively shrill and irritating charicature. Almost like Brittany but without any of the redeeming naivette. A little subtlety would have made this episode loads better. Still OK.
#5 (loser) "Story of D"
No meaningful resolution to a conflict between Daria and Tom that seemed artificial to begin with. All the conflict necessary could have been supplied by the tension between Daria's inward hopes and dreams vs. the outward apathy and resignation. Instead this episode seemed an awkward excuse to make Tom look like Captain Nice.

#5: Malled; That was Then, This is Dumb; The Lost Girls; The F Word; The Story of D
WINNER: #405, The F Word
I can just see O’Neill assigning something like that. And, I love the tragic result of it all.
You know, I can't for the life of me figure out why this episode gets so much bad press. I found it hilarious. I really rather enjoyed the concept of Jane going mainstream, and the relative ease with which she did it might just freak her out sufficiently to consider that maybe that was where she belonged.
Loser: #303, The Lost Girls
I hate Val. What the hell kind of moron is she? Even the Fashion Club one-upped her. I couldn’t for a moment believe she was running an “edgy” teen magazine.

The current tallies as of 1:15am Fri. Dec. 14th:
Malled 5
TFW 4
TSOD 3
TWTTID 2
TLG 0
So it looks like you may still be able to add to the Cellar with TLG.

In short order: "Malled", "That Was Then, This Is Dumb", "The 'F' Word", "The Lost Girls".
I like "Malled", because it was basically a low-key, but good ep, more in the middle tier of 'Daria' eps, and of the "classic" Season One variety. Say, is this considered an "ensamble" ep? I never thought about that 'till now.
"That Was Then, This Is Dumb" to me is most famous for "The Smile", Trent's tiny little one to Daria, that is, when she thought he was asleep. Yeah, he did it. I believe it was to tease the 'shippers a little.
"The 'F' Word" is part of the "Mainstream Jane" ep guide to me: the others, "See Jane Run", and unofficially, "Jane's Addition". Yeah, "Jane's Addition", because Jane tries to be "normal" like everyone else for having a boyfriend, and it makes Daria angry.
>Loser: #303, The Lost Girls
>
>I hate Val. What the hell kind of moron is she? Even the Fashion Club one-upped her. I couldn’t for a moment believe she was running an “edgy” teen magazine.
Definitely a flat ep. I think it's on the lower rung of the middle tier, just above the so-called "worse" 'Daria' eps. (Which are still better than most TV shows, of course) The most famous thing about this ep was (to me, at least) it taking a subtle dig at MTV itself. Notice how Val always thought she knew what was best for teen demographics, despite pushing *40*? Sound familiar? ;D
Mini-spoiler by the way: Val'll sort of "get" hers in the last chapter of my fic "Visitation"... thanks.

My vote is for #205 "That Was Then, This Is Dumb." The "A" plot is kind of dumb, but I can relate to it somewhat because my parents were hippies when I was little and then gradually became stressed-out middle aged consumers (middle age being a mindset rather than a biological category here). The flea market plot was done very well. For once Upchuck adds to the story instead of just p*ssing me off, Jesse is at his finest, and the level of shipperism is just right for the time and place.
Ranking the others: The F Word ("conventional Jane" and Mr. O'Neill's apartment were worth seeing), then The Story of D (Daria acts like a stupid brat), then Malled (I watch _Daria_ to get *away* from shopping malls), and somewhere distantly far behind the other mediocre 05 episodes, The Lost Girls (one of the three worst episodes ever).

I'm easily amused so, while these were not the strongest episodes of the series, I didn't hate any of them, either.
I would have to list my votes as:
105 - Malled
205 - That Was Then, This Is Dumb
505 - The Story of D
405 - The F Word
305 - The Lost Girls

... when we see the essential weakness of this model, as these eps are mostly mediocre. I'd rather just pick my favourite thirteen, but what the hell...
Malled: Lacklustre, should have been better considering the target material. That said, it's not in the league of, say, Of Human Bonding or other such stinkers.
That Was Then, This Is Dumb: Refer Malled. Ethan was kinda amusing though.
The Lost Girls: The major objections to this ep seem to be (1) Val's sheer obnoxiousness and (2) Daria's inaction in the face of (1). Big whoop. I didn't find Val annoying at all --- personal opinion, yadda yadda --- and Daria's inaction merely served to further the episode's point. Not necessarily a good thing, but the more horrors from Val we saw the more pathetically funny things got.
The F Word: Feel free to employ a few. Like ATGIL, this isn't as bad as its reputation, but that's not saying much. Another S4 balloon.
The Story of D: Review on hold until Martin finishes the transcript, hell freezes over or the ABC broadcasts season five (in which case Satan will be in the market for snow tyres anyway).
So, overall ranking, best to worst: 305, 205, 105, 405.
(Um: if you could, also put in votes for 201, 102, 103 and 204. Murky buckets.)

Yeah, but at least we HAVE a model. And I'd find directly comparing 65 of anything daunting.

I guess I should send in my votes:
05s
--
205: That Was Then, This Is Dumb. I know a lot of "Yeagers," and the nail was hit squarely on the head.
405: The "F" Word. At last we get to see just how weird O'Neill *really* is.
305: The Lost Girls. The "Val gets dumped" scene was just great.
105: Malled. The best part was Bennett's "Fuzzy Wuzzy Wee Bits" obsession.
505: The Story of D. Once again, OH looks for someone nearby to blame for her rejection other than herself. Bitch.

Here's the rest of the episodes.
Now for the 05's. I haven't seen either "Malled" or "This Was Then, That Was Dumb", so neither episode will get a vote from me. Instead, my vote goes to "The Story of D". I could definitely sympathize with Daria when her story got rejected. As a writer of several fanfics (one of them being a Daria fanfic), I liked seeing Daria try to publish one of her stories. My suggestion to her would be that she try to write a Melody Powers story for the magazine. They might like it. Oh, and I liked seeing Helen freak out over the idea of Tom and Daria being alone together, since I knew that they wouldn't be having sex.
Second would be "The F Word". We do get to see some interesting examples of people failing in various ways, some of the ways rather surprising indeed. And we get to see a new Jane, though she quickly returns to the old Jane. The only problem is that there was too much extraneous material crowding out the issues dealing with Jane's brush with conformity.
And last is "The Lost Girls". Val's very annoying. Enough said.
