so let's give it another go.
Same as before except we'll discuss the 02's, and pick a fav of the bunch.
102 - "The Invitation" Obviously, the writers were still feeling out the characters at this point, but if you look back at this ep, with what we know about the characters, we see they nailed them all on the head at an early stage. What would become a regular theme of at least the first 2 seasons, popular vs. unpopular, was the theme again with this episode. Many great lines from this one:
Jane: Alright, he thought my head was a lollipop.
Daria: ....waiting here for you. We were born in this room, we grew up in this room, and we thought we'd die here, alone, but now you've come...
Guy: She likes you!
Plus Jane's scene with the rent-a-cop was superb, all in all an excellent episode. Excellent interaction or lack thereof with the sisters (cousins?) Morgendorffer.
202 - "The Daria Hunter" Panned by most as an incoherent piece of garbage that made little sense. It did make ittle sense, but I liked it. Just one of those shut your brain off and enjoy the pretty colors type of episodes. Plus a few running gags started with this ep. The O'Neill Barch relationship, the Helen Ms. Li feud continued, the first serious volleys thrown in the Sandi-Quinn rivalry, was only some words to that point no actions, until this one. Jake's childhood rantings as well. Plus it had probably the best end credit music of season 2. Not a super ep, but much better than most give it credit for, IMO.
302 - "The Old and the Beautiful" Average episode all around, though Daria does stick it out at the home, I'd have expected her to give up after the first day, and stick it to Ms. Li, as she needed 100% participation to get that award. The FC scenes were actually the funniest parts of this episode.
Sandi: Theresa, they're homeless, not tasteless.
Stacy: Eww! Why can't he just reach inside his shopping cart and pick out something that matches? Even when the FC is trying to do good, they can't quite grasp the concept minus Quinn. Plus the reaction with Mrs. Johansen was LOL.
Overall however, an average episode.
402 - "Antisocial Climbers" Basically a rehash of "Just Add Water", which was a retelling of "Daria Hunter" itself. Basically it was "Daria Hunter" on a mountain. Again there were some funny moments, don't get me wrong, O'Neill's Blair Witch scene was funny, as were Helen and Jake's attempts at conversation after the afterglow had worn off. Plus Sandi finally gets rid of Quinn, only to have her get back in on the flimsiest of reasons. Daria's only moment was her conversation w/Jane in the middle of the blizzard. Again a saving grace is the end credit music, a good selection in a season full of them. But another so-so emsemble episode, with only one good one to show for it at this point in the series, "Daria Dance Party". Again average.
502 - "Sappy Anniversary" Daria's growing up. Thanks to Quinn, she frets over something that was previously meaningless to her, her and Tom's 6-month anniversary. Daria is feeling her way around her first "Relation-dateship" thing and it shows here, a common theme of season 5. Her and Tom have a spat, Daria realizes in most cases, she's the one who's being stubborn, apologizes, and everything's okay. It was ok here, but got old as the season wore on.
The subplot here was just as interesting here. Jake taking a job with a dot-com company hoping to make big with the stock portfolio, but he's too late to cash in. Seemingly a master at multi-tasking, everything is going ok until the computer overloads and shuts down, losing everything he had. Left with nothing but the buzzwords that got him the job, he's released, but hired as a consultant for Buzzdome. A nice swipe at the dot-com world, though a bit late, as they were already starting to fall by the wayside when this ep aired, but still good. Helen and Jake's flashback worked well as did the joke that came with it near the end. Overall an above par ep, not a superstar, but very good, lacked a bit in the "main" plot but otherwise, good.
Very simple decision here really. "The Invitation" wins here for me hands down, in fact I'd rate it in my top 3-4 all time episodes.
Everyone, go for it!

Not a huge fan of this one. Daria embarassing Quinn is
amusing, and the rent-a-cop was very funny: "I made that
one up," but it's a bit too standard. Many of the best
Daria eps. are inventive or provide a different angle on
a common issue (cf. _The Misery Chick_, _Through a Lens
Darkly_) where tI is just "popular people suck, but I got
a bonus sock."
>202 - "The Daria Hunter" Panned by most as an incoherent piece of

tDH is interesting, but ultimately still lousy. I think the
characterization was very deft in the episode (except for
Brittany as strategic savant), but the fact that the solid
characterization led to such an unappealing episode begs the
question of why it was made at all. Daria and Jane acted
exactly as they should, which is to ignore the whole outing
and do nothing. So the "A" plot is nonexistent. (The shark
thing was just lame.) And the B plots don't provide enough
interest to make up for it.
>302 - "The Old and the Beautiful" Average episode all around, though

Bland. Bland. Bland. Bland.
Also, too much Kevin and Brittany (who are best dealt with
in small doses).

I think I prefer AC to tDH because the interactions are a
little more emotionally resonant, even if they are played for
laughs. Daria and Jane are in real danger, Helen and Jake
confront (or avoid confronting) something fundamental about
their marriage, and Quinn learns something about the cost
of vanity.
OTOH, the episode is not all that entertaining. The pace is
choppy and it's not all that funny. Quinn gets the best
line: "I'm sorry I've doomed us to a lingering death, Sandi."
Bleah! The "A" plot wasn't very good. I much prefer Daria-
Tom issues as a sidelight in an ep, like in _The Story of
D_. (_My Night at Daria's_ is an exception. The interation
there was important and entertaining. Here it just feels
forced.)
>The subplot here was just as interesting here. Jake taking a job >with a dot-com company hoping to make big with the stock portfolio,

Here's the spot that saved the Episode. Jake's eventful week
at Buzzdome was laugh out loud funny and encapsulates everything
good and entertaining about Jake's character. He *tries* with
all his heart, and we love him for it. But he fails, in
excruciatingly funny ways. He's a far deeper character than
Homer Simpson, say, but he's still very funny.
>Very simple decision here really. "The Invitation" wins here for me hands down, in fact I'd rate it in my top 3-4 all time episodes.
Of the five, "Sappy Anniversary" is my favorite, with "The
Invitation" second, the two sides of the same coin, and "The
Old and the Beautiful" as the worst.

And then...the entire concept disappeared. Why? Suddenly, Daria became acceptable to a lot of her peers, including the head cheerleader, the QB, the student government princess. How, exactly, did this occur? What was the turning point? Personally, I think they just dropped it and hoped we'd all forget. Which causes one to understand S1'er rage at what came later.
> Many great lines from this one:
Don't forget the show's first breast reference:
Daria - You're really bursting out of the picture plane here.
Jane - Oh, yeah. That particular model was quite bursty. I think she had her bursts done.
>Jane: Alright, he thought my head was a lollipop.
It sure does look like one. And this was the birth of the "Loose Jane" theory that makes the rounds from time to time....
>Plus Jane's scene with the rent-a-cop was superb
No one's ever noticed that the prevert was horning in on a high-school party after drooling all over nude studies in Jane's book. He needs to be on a sherrif's Web site somewhere.

I need more special effects to do that.
>302 - "The Old and the Beautiful" Average episode all around, though Daria does stick it out at the home, I'd have expected her to give up after the first day, and stick it to Ms. Li, as she needed 100% participation to get that award.
Saw this twice, and nearly nothing sticks. Next.

>402 - "Antisocial Climbers" Basically a rehash of "Just Add Water", which was a retelling of "Daria Hunter" itself. Basically it was "Daria Hunter" on a mountain.
Question for the masses: Has there ever been a great "ensemble cast" episode of Daria? Y'know, where everyone's brought together under some kind of wacky premise to interact? The problems with these eps:
a. Choking down the wacky premise.
b. Stretching that wacky premise so that Jake and Helen show up. Disbelief is firmly anchored next to me on the couch, eating the last of the chips and wiping its fingers on the cushions.
c. Putting up with loooong stretches of O'Neill.
d. Daria disappears in her own damn show.
e. Too much stuff going on in 22 minutes.
Possible exception: Mart of Darkness and, as AJ says, Daria Dance Party
> Daria's only moment was her conversation w/Jane in the middle of the blizzard.
But this does earn this ep special mention, as it is the first time I can recall that Daria and Jane are really real with one another. Foreshadowing of the IICY quasi-reconciliation and, of course, "The Hug.(TM)"
>
>502 - "Sappy Anniversary" Daria's growing up. Thanks to Quinn, she frets over something that was previously meaningless to her, her and Tom's 6-month anniversary.
Her first mistake, of course, is taking relationship advice from Quinn. One can only suppose a stray flying can of soda konked her on the head after what we saw in Fizz Ed.
>Daria is feeling her way around her first "Relation-dateship" thing and it shows here, a common theme of season 5. Her and Tom have a spat, Daria realizes in most cases, she's the one who's being stubborn, apologizes, and everything's okay. It was ok here,
No, it wasn't, IMHO.
>but got old as the season wore on.
I learned how the S1'er felt...where the hell was Daria from 501 to 513? I kept looking around for the pod from which this imposter crawled.
But the first laugh-out-loud moment of S5 was this classic Quinn rap:
Quinn - Well, I remember that your first date was the same day I started my split-end refusing regimen, unless you don't count from the first date but instead from the time you kissed him behind your best friend's back while she was still going out with him, which I believe was the night of the Fashion Club Blushathon finals.
Daria - And to think, Mom and Dad only have the day JFK was shot.
Quinn - Let's say we ignore the instance of sleazy backstabbing, so that means...
Quinn -- mistress of the deadpan remark. The "eye director" (that's a real credit, no foolin') also gets an Emmy for The Red Head's facial expressions during Tom's front-door grilling.
>

I'm sure he never got paid...too bad the time-delay got them on the social commentary. I wonder what 1,000 shares of Buzzdome common is worth today? Probably cheaper than toilet paper.
If only Daria had had the facilities South Park enjoys, being able to drop last-minute topical stuff in a the click of a mouse.
Don't fail to remember the hot-tub scenes, and Jake's reaction to the 18-year-old plus wizard candle.

Hey, she revealed to the 3J's that she was "Quinn's brainy sister" again here. Oh, lets not forget the scene where Jane removes Daria’s glasses and imitates her.
Jane: “Hi. I’m Daria. Go to hell. Naw, it wouldn’t work. My face is too expressive.

What about this scene?
Stacy: “My feet hurt.”
Sandi: “Stacy... for once, try to look beyond your own petty concerns. Today we're thinking about others, remember?”
Stacy: “Um, sorry, Sandi.”
Homeless Man: “Spare some change?”
(Fashion Club walks right past him, oblivious)
Sandi: “It's all right, Stacy. Just try to be a little more compassionate, okay?”
That’s good too, but my favorite scenes were when Daria tried to take “perkiness” lessons from Brittany, but not before sneaking one from Quinn first.
Daria(imitating Quinn): “Have I got enough product in my hair?”
And of course when she first tried to read to one of the seniors;
Nurse: “Mrs. Patterson, can I get you something?”
Mrs. Patterson: “Get me my walker. And then hit her with it!”
>402 - "Antisocial Climbers" Basically a rehash of "Just Add Water", which was a retelling of "Daria Hunter" itself. Basically it was "Daria Hunter" on a mountain. I still say that “blizzard” was a joke. Not even six inches of snow, and too many bare spots, even in the mountains. Lawndale couldn't possibly be in the norhteast if that's what passes for a blizzard there. The so-called “storm of the century” may have been devastating for the south, but as blizzards go, it’s average in the northeast. From what I’ve been told, the kind of snow the New York tri-state area gets from a blizzard is commonplace in Denver, Minneapolis, Buffalo, and Syracuse.
>502 - "Sappy Anniversary" Daria's growing up. Thanks to Quinn, she frets over something that was previously meaningless to her, her and Tom's 6-month anniversary. This theme in Season 5 is rather disturbing, but at least it takes a swipe at old Disney movies.
Daria: “Oh, God. This is like that scene in Pinocchio when he discovers he's growing ears like the rest of the donkeys.”
Jane: “Well, then, stop being an ass and go talk to Tom.”
(Daria sighs and starts to leave, bowing to the inevitable)
Jane: “And always let your conscience be your...”
Daria: “Oh, shut up!”
Of course if they start to have normal dates, should we prepare for a breakup?

As regarding comments an the '02's, tDH Has always been one of my faves, mostly for the quotes/lifts/steals from all the 'Nam movies (the horror, the horror!) and when they left Sandi behind a la "Platoon". I thought the "B" plot was good, as it provided a counterpoint as well as another blockbuster to steal/lift/quote from.
402 had some glaring mistakes, especially regarding weather conditions. As a native Buffalonian, and after living in Utah(Greatest Snow in Earth) Yeah, they over reacted a bit to that dusting, but none of them were really prepared for weather of that type, but just remember,IT'S A CARTOON! and they needed it to carry the story.
503- Took character development a step forward with Quinn actually helping OH in relationship issues, and the "B"plot was kind of humorous, if dated. Now returning to my stupor...

>>Stacy: Eww! Why can't he just reach inside his shopping cart and pick out something that matches? Even when the FC is trying to do good, they can't quite grasp the concept minus Quinn. Plus the reaction with Mrs. Johansen was LOL.
>>Overall however, an average episode.
>>
>
>
>
>
>
>And of course when she first tried to read to one of the seniors;

>>

>>
>
>
>
>
>>
>>
>Yeah, what *does* Buzzdome.com do? They seem like just a webhost to me. And what song was used as background music during the first scene at Buzzdome.com? Also, Nora was kind of cute. Who provided her voice?
>
>
>>Very simple decision here really. "The Invitation" wins here for me hands down, in fact I'd rate it in my top 3-4 all time episodes.
>>
>I'm torn between that and "Sappy Anniversary."

Wow, the 02s bite. "The Invitiation" it is, though "Antisocial Climbers" would have been better if they hadn't already done the same plot at least twice.

This post has now ended...

I didn't vote for the 01s & 02s either, so here goes.
201: Arts 'n' Crass. Also a #1 contender. Sic' her, Helen!
401: Partner's Complaint. A good episode, but wasn't that stuff with Tom settled at the end of last season? Worth it just for "bionic" Brittany.
501: Fizz Ed. Sorry, Daria doesn't have a brain anymore, and neither do the writers.
02s
Best
201: The Invitation. Lollipop Jane. The fighting J's. And Daria was there to comment on it all. It could have been improved if they had settled on Brittany's voice by then.
Runners-up
202: The Daria Hunter. Sic' them, Brittany! Sic' them Jane, for that matter. A perfect way to get out of a stupid school field trip, pity it didn't have a better pay off.
302: The Old and the Beautiful. Nice to see Melody Powers again.
402: Antisocial Climbers. "I'm sorry my parents didn't stop at one child." That gives me an idea...
502: Sappy Anniversary. Right. Season five equals brainless Daria.

I guess I should send in my votes:
02s

202: The Daria Hunter, if only for the Jake/DeMartino bonding scene (that's *bonding*, not *bondage, you pervs!) I know guys like Jim of "Paintballing Jungle" fame.
101: The Invitation.
302: The Old and the Beautiful. OH reads Ginsburg, Jane warps youth.
402: Antisocial Climbers. Nice animation of the lighting, the menacing advance toward Quinn was priceless, but ultimately a little flat.
502: Sappy Anniversary. Been there, done that.

I missed these on the original runs, so:
102 - Actually, the first episode of Daria I saw. Mom the art teacher found the perspective lesson.
202 and 302 - Haven't seen, but in regards to 202, I hear those paintball thingies hurt. ^_^
402 - I don't think it's as bad as everyone else seems to, but it's certainly not phenomenal.
502 - eh.
best here - 102

Subj: Votes for 01 - 03 episodes

I missed the chance to do these earlier, but I'll do it now.
As for the 02's, I never saw "The Invitation", so I can't vote for it. The rest are at best good, at worst mediocre. First choice -- the best of the lot, "Sappy Anniversary". Quinn's advice about how to tell if a guy's paying attention to you or not is just like her, and it triggers doubts within Daria's mind as to whether Tom's taking her for granted. It was a relief to see that her doubts were off base. I also liked seeing Jake's efforts at getting into a dot.com corporation go bad, as one might expect.
Next on the list is "Antisocial Climbers". It was an okay episode, and the best of those that were very similar to each other that I'd seen ("Just Add Water" and "The Daria Hunter" being the other two ones I saw). But it wasn't the greatest.
Third was "The Daria Hunter". I put this ahead of "The Old and the Beautiful" because I liked seeing Brittany use military strategy, and liked seeing the beginning of Ms. Barch and Mr. O'Neill's relationship.
Last is "The Old and the Beautiful". It was just boring to me.
