Abruptly Amy

"Double in Paradise"

Notes and Errata

This is the episode that effectively divided Abruptly Amy viewers into two camps: Supporters of Amy's side of the argument, and supporters of Kristovo. The people who disliked Kristovo to begin with absolutely slammed him following this episode, while Amy detractors, who claimed the character of Amy had already been ruined in "A New Beginning", supported Kristovo, one of the few characters they felt was being handled halfway realistically (in some episodes). A sampling of posts to alt.tv.abruptly-amy within 2 hours of the airing of this episode illustrates the fans' dissention:

Subject: Corona was right, Amy IS a total basket-case!

If you ask me, Amy *totally* overreacted in this episode. Her thirst for vengeance against Corona seemed purely personal, not professional at all.

Examples:

"It's payback time!" (in the first act)
"I'm not leaving until this bitch gets what's coming to her!" (third act)

And to top it all off, she shoots this woman without provocation, *while her back is turned*!

Don't get me wrong, I *like* Amy, but her behavior in this episode was inexcusable, and she has no right to fault Kristovo!

If you ask me Kirstvo was the unprofessional one: He let his feelings for his sister (whom he's just met) undermine his professional behavior (he's been an FBI agent for how many years???).

(See, I used the word "whom", that automatically means I'm right, and also better than everyone else here.)

>"It's payback time!" (in the first act).
>"I'm not leaving until this bitch gets what's coming to her!" (third act)

How about:

"What are you waiting for, help me arrest her!", just after she finds Carona and Kirstvo.

WOW... still reeling from tonight's ep. Kristovo and Corona are brother and sister, the other tattoo girl is a spy, the society explained, Rita sleeping with Kristovo... But the big question is... Are Amy and Kristovo finished as a couple?? Sure seems like it to me, but what does everyone else think?

Subject: KRISTOVO IS A TOTAL FUCKING PIG!!!!!!!

God, I thought I hated Kristovo before, but after tonight's episode I can't even type his stupid name without wanting to rip off those big pecs of his and SHOVE THEM DOWN HIS THROAT!!! Can you imagine anyone doing anything as vile as sleeping with your girlfriend's SISTER?!? WATCHING as your OWN sister rolls in the mud with your underwear-clad girlfriend, and GETTING OFF ON IT?!?!!! That chauvanistic SPECIMEN has no respect for women at all, least of all Amy! Can you believe he PULLED A GUN ON HER?!?!?! She and Corona should team up and stomp the shit out of him and then when he's lying on the ground all bruised and bleeding and his broken bones are sticking through his flesh and he's sobbing from the agony, they should MOUNT HIS BODY ON A PIKE AND HANG IT OVER THE BAKE SALE AS A WARNING TO ALL THE MALE SCUM OF RUTHERFORD!!!

I'm starting a new website called KMFDM: The Kristovo Must Fucking Die Militia. Its still under construction but feel free to visit and let me know what you think (if you hate Kristovo as much as I do!!)

agreed, i can't imagine anyone conducting themselves in a manner less becoming to an fbi agent. i think she must have eaten some bad happy dough or something. amy should not be allowed to carry a spatula let alone a gun... the woman is completely out of control, kristovo is far too good for a raving lunatic like her.

p.s. can someone tell me, where's the capslock key

Yes! Preach it, sister!
Men like that are the reason the world is so screwed up today!
Kristofo is pond scum, they should kill him off in the bloodiest, most painful way possible and let Andrea eat what's left!!!!

I dunno, Amy's prone to some pretty drastic mood-swings, and the writers seem uncertain of where to take the show. Or they just don't care about continuity. Remember Andrea sleeping with Jesse just a little while ago, now she's dating the skate guy and only lets him give her a little kiss? I think they'll evnetually get back together, but maybe not for awhile.

Then why are you incapable of spelling the characters' names correctly? It's "Kristovo" and "Corona", you simpering simpleton!

Yes, I admit it, Amy followed proper procedure with this one line. Now you explain to me how that excuses her from plugging a suspect in the back five minutes later.

Lifetime's website has the next episode's summary up:

www.lifetimetv.com/abruptly_amy/aamain.html

It's the Christmas episode; knowing this show they'll do something like get them back together here, but I don't work for the show so I don't know for sure. ^v^

Personally I'd like to see something more happen between Andrea + Ryan. They make a cute couple. ^v^

I say they were both wrong, yes it was stupid of Amy to shoot Corona, but it was also stupid of Kristovo to try to get closer to her. Fact: Corona is evil (she even said so herself in an earlier episode). Kristovo is a complete moron if he thinks he has any hope of changing her. Just like Amy has no chance of changing *him*. (Did you notice how she was thinking six-month anniversary and it took Kirstovo completely by surprise??)

How can you people feel sympethy for that despicible man?!?! Cristovo, like Corona, is EVIL, pure and simple! He laughed at Amy, he made a snide remark about her passion for cheese fries, THIS MAKES HIM THE ANTI-CHRIST!! I bet Andrea worships him because she is a SATANIST and HE IS THE DEVIL!!! Cristovo is more EVIL than Hitler, Jefrey Damer, the Menendez Brothers, and Sadam Husane COMBINED!!! I hate him, I hate him, I hate him, SO THERE!!! EVERYONE WHO DOESN'T IS JUST AS EVIL AS HE IS!!!

Hey, just a bit of trivia about tonight's Abruptly Amy (great episode, by the way):

An acquaintance of my brother's fiancee's boss's sister-in-law knows a guy who knows one of the production staff, and he said she said he said she said he said Amy's "don't cancel my show!" plea in this episode was an unscripted adlib by the actress who plays Amy. It remained in the episode, the story goes, because Alan Smithee was too cheap to do a second voice take. According to him, according to her, according to him, according to her, according to him, apparently Amy fears her career will be over if the show is canned.

True story.

Agreed, they were both wrong, that's why it works as drama. We the viewers see both sides but can't choose to agree with just one.

Do we even know that she's his sister for real? Maybe it's all a big trick. All we saw was Corona reading the DNA results, what does that prove???

Ok, but why dont you tell us how you -really- feel? ;}

I disagree about the relationship thing, the fact is Amy and Kristovo are not in a comitted relationship. Amy seems to think they are, Kristovo does not. (Did you notice how he seemed surprised in the beginning of the episode, when she brought up their six month anniversary?) This episode seems to be a lot about comittments, what things mean to different people, and how the same thing might not be as important to others.

Subject: My take on the Amy/Kristovo fight

In the heat of all this Amy/Kristovo contorversy, I think everyone's overlooking Rita's part in the whole mess. She's the one who made the first move on Kristovo out in the hall, it's her fault as much as his.

Granted, I like Rita, I think she made a good sympathetic character in this episode. And this could really inject the series with some high drama if/when Amy finds out about it. I just hope they dont drag this out -- have them "make up" in the next episode but keep the hint of tension around for weeks to come.

"High drama"??? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA, oh come ON!!! This is soap opera, a love triangle, manipulative emotionally-charged tripe. What on earth made the writers decide to go with such an overused cliche?

Hey, I know, let's all bitch about this nonstop until the next season.

By the following morning, the newsgroup had deteriorated to the point where nothing relevant about Amy, Kristovo, or Rita was being posted at all anymore. Spinoff threads included politics, religion, is Ryan a virgin, is Corona a lesbian, is Andrea a lesbian, is Ruth a lesbian, politics, insipid inside jokes only understood by about 2% of the group, religion, posts consisting of nothing but giggling at another poster's witty remarks ("LOL!", "hehehehehehehehe!"), knowledge-spewers showing off their extensive collection of useless facts, politics, religion, where is Rutherford, when is the AA movie coming out, religion, religion, and politics.

Okay, Now On to the REAL Notes

Gawd, how thoroughly degrading! Amy doing a striptease, Amy mud-wrestling in her underwear, Amy dangling topless from a helicopter... I've taken Kara's original mockery of Daria's favorite aunt and elevated it to an art form! Kristovo sleeping with Rita because he's mad at Amy for ruining his chance to get to know his long-lost twin sister, who turns out to be the same evil villaness who kidnapped Amy's adopted daughter... What a freakin' soap opera! This one was even more fun to write than my first Abruptly Amy script, "Corona, Corona". To the other writers, I say: Ha! Top this! B-)

The setting: We've already seen Amy versus Corona in Rutherford, so I decided it was time for a more exotic locale. Shipping the two agents off to Europe allowed me to test their relationship, and to concentrate on what Andrea and Rita are like when Amy's not around. Why Ibiza, of all places? It's actually an obscure inside joke. Ibiza has long been hailed as the techno-dance club capital of western Europe. Well, awhile back I was browsing music on Amazon.com, and discovered that there actually is a dance diva out there named "Corona". It was too perfect, you can't make stuff like that up! The club setting worked beautifully: It provided Amy and Kristovo with some cover when infiltrating Corona's mansion (which I knew I wanted to have them do in this episode), and it gave me an excuse, albeit flimsy, but that's the point, for the unequivocally gratuitous striptease sequence.

Baxter: She's the absolute stereotype of the "gonna get killed" character. One, she's a minority sidekick (a black minority sidekick, the worst kind to be in an action movie). Two, she mentions not once but twice how close she is to retirement. And three, as if one and two weren't enough, she wears a red uniform, the outfit of choice for every low-ranking Star Trek peon who's ever met an untimely demise. Seriously, if you didn't see Baxter's death coming a mile away, you haven't watched enough movies and TV.

Product Placement: The introduction of Corona in this script, the slow pan revealing her on the beach, imitates the "Change Your Whole Latitude" commercials for Corona. (Cuz her name's Corona, see. Like the Mexican beer.)

The Society: The alchemy / Elixir of Life idea is a really dumbed-down version of a leftover from a horror / techno-thriller novel I started years ago but abandoned after about 11 chapters. (No, you can't see it, please don't ask.)

Play That Funky Music: Yes, I have actual music for the Corona dance number. Unfortunately, it's all in my head. Hope to try laying it out on my mixing software when I have time (which I have a feeling won't be for a good long while). Originally I'd planned for the song to be longer, but... *tch*... there just aren't that many words that rhyme with "Corona".

Marcus: Note his last name, Marcus Pietropinto. Observant Daria fans will note that if Rita had married him, we'd get Rita Pietropinto, the maiden name of the voice actress on Daria who plays... Amy! (No real point to this, just another obscure inside joke.)

"Kiss My Asphalt, You Freaking Load of Spit": Baxter's line, "The spit hit the fan", and Andrea's frequent use of "freakin'", are intended to mock the cheesy TV technique of replacing naughty words that can't be used on TV with ones that sound similar, and trying to pass them off as the same word. Happens all the time when R-rated movies are ported to prime time, but the idea itself came from one particularly painful "E.R." subplot involving an ex-military patient who supposedly swore nonstop, but it was hard to take seriously because the show's writers used the above technique to excess. I felt hideously embarrassed for the actor, but at least he got paid for it.

¿Que?: The English-Spanish translations are courtesy of AltaVista's "Babel Fish" utility. They're not perfect, but that's kind of the point. (American TV shows never get other languages quite right.) If you decide to go through and nitpick the Spanish, there's no need to share your findings with me, as I refuse to learn anything from this. ¿Comprende? (Hee, those li'l upside-down question marks are neat!)

Continuity:

And total disregard thereof (these are intentional, to poke fun at the fact that TV shows always have some breach of continuity, so please don't give me any crap about them):

Cliche countdown:

The fake newsgroup posts: Just a little something I'd wanted to do for awhile, to poke fun at things I've noticed on a certain real-life newsgroup for a certain other TV show... B-)

And that's about it, for both these author's notes and my part in the Abruptly Amy series. The last episode, #8, is Kara's, then it's over. Unless... we happen to get a large number of messages urging us to put together five more for a full season (and possibly beyond). It's up to you, the viewers at home. Please call, and show your support for the quality educational and cultural programming of public television. Pledge only $50, and get this free "Abruptly Amy" soundtrack featuring Sixpence None the Richer's "There She Goes", and... that's about it.
